Slang for a cable or something that is permanently attached on one end and has a contector on the other.

If you're good with a soldering iron, you could do it yourself. I would attempt that if it were my own hdd.

You would also need to know the pinouts on the connector to get the correct wire. You can, of course, eyeball it and probably do ok, but a flat ribbon cable going into a two row connector is not always obvious which wire is on top and which is on the bottom. I am sure you can look up the pinouts on the Internet.

what's this "soldering iron" you speak of?
i hope that answers this question

but it's cool i found a place only 30 minutes away that can do it for $10-11

anyone wanna give me some last minute risk assessment on this procedure? i've decided to go with number one getting a permanent pigtail attached.

Well, assuming that they make no mistake on the pin and the corresponding wire, there isn't much risk. There is a slight risk on timing since the one signal will have a few inches more to travel, but that should be negligible. If it works, you will be tempted to continue using it, but I recommend that if you do, you get a new disk for your important data and boot disk. Just use the old one for your swap file, temp data storage, etc. - anything you don't mind losing.

i see, i just had an idea if i make a data recovery kit, will it restore everything with a differen't copy of windows? (both xp just differen't copies) if so i was thinking after this works i'll get a new C drive then make a data recovery kit for the whole C drive and "restore" it to my new drive, then i would take and get a new d drive and copy the whole contents of D to D. will this work? i've never used a data recovery set with a differen't copy of windows.

Huh? Data recovery kit? Different versions of win32? I'm confused. And that make me hungry...

T3C,
Here is how I, personally, would handle this. I would buy a single large disk, say 160GB. I would buy Partition Magic. I would install the disk, partition it with Partition Magic into two partitions, E and F, or what ever is avaialble. I would use use PM to move all the files from one partition on the old drive to a new partition on the new drive. (check and make sure it can to this - I don't remember exactly). I would then change the drive number of C: to an unused letter and D: to an unused number. Then I would take the new E: and change it to C: if that is where you moved C: to and F: to D:. The reason you want to do this is that PM does all the register changing for you, so that programs installed in the old partion are now installed properly in the disk partition. Of course if you have room for two new disks and the pocket book to afford it, buy two drives and do the same thing. Or, PM makes a program called something like Drive Copy and it will copy an image of your disk to the new one. You still have to worry about changing the drive names and the registry issue, but perhaps Drive Copy does that as well.
