Thanks guys. Ok paging set at 4.2GB. Is that a good setting?

Good for a maximum, too big for a minimum. Too high a minimum will actually slow the machine down.

Since you have two drives, you should have something like

C: 1024 - 3096
D: 1024 - 3096

This would give a minimum of 2GB and a max of 6GB spread across both drives for max performance.

furthermore, ...

What is the minimum set against?

you should defragment your drives first before setting up the paging files. What this means is that currently, you probably have your paging file complete on C:

1) Well defragment drive D: using "Disk Defragmenter" under Start->Accessories->System Tools

2) Then go and move the whole paging file to D:

3) Then defragment drive C: using "Disk Defragmenter"

4) and move half the paging file to C:

In this way, you will be sure you have the maximum Virtual Memory performance.

The minimum appears in that field called "Initial Size". (on that panel that Xg and I directed you to)

Thanks will do Will try your suggested set up. Let you know in due course how it works out.

I wouldn't bother advising you with these tips (I haven't bothered myself), except that you do have a fast machine and you probably want to get the maximum out of it that you can

Yep got that, what i actually meant was what denotes the size setting for the minimum? ie how do you decide what the base level should be?

The initial number varies depending on your available memory. If you have a tiny bit of main memory, say 256MB, then you will want a much bigger paging file. Say 512MB minimum. That is because since you don't have a lot of memory, your applications will spend a lot of time sitting out on disk! But if you have a huge main memory as you have, then the minimum should be low. You can even set it to 1GB. But I personally would never set it below the amount of main memory. Having to big a minimum will actually *slow* your machine down. The maximum size should be pretty much 3x your main memory size for just in case situations (when you decide to start up 50 applications at one time! )

Ok Sloth what settings should i have for my old pc (using now)

71BG hard drive, 256MB ddr (carp i know )

The reason you want to split the paging file between two drives of equal speed is so that when there is stuff in the paging file that needs to come in, or stuff in memory that needs to go out, then the system can read and write to both drives simultaneously, which can double the performance at times.

#1760  by Citizen Slothrop Master of V-2s - 4/1/2004 5:47:46 PM

I would set:
minimum to 512 and
maximum to 768 or even 1GB

If you only have one HD, then splitting is obviously out.

Thanks mate. Should keep the wife happy as it will soon be hers. No way i'm letting her loose on the new one. She would just end up using it for solitaire or Themem Hospital

What a waste!

I have been away a lot, but all this computer discussion has attracted the attention of my Yor espionage droids. Maybe the extra attention is needed, as the Diplomats are a top 10 empire now and people know what fiendish things I do to all top 10 empires eventually. Well, looks like I will need to do something about that soon, but first I will let the droids spy on you for a few days beforehand. Congrats on #10.

He's doing it again...[rolls eyes]

DDR Ram? I have a computer with that! It is a Pentium II 233 with a 6GB hard drive, 42MB DDR Ram, something like a 24x CD drive. Oh, and one of the first 3D cards. But the 233 can't handle it. We are going to use it at school and build ourselves a Beowulf Cluster.

Whats this about the Yor?

 "Number seven report!"

 "Reporting"

"Seven have you seen any Yor around here?"

 "Negative"

"Ok then. That will throw him off our backs!!!!"

One more thing, before making the paging file bigger, be sure to:

1) reboot
2) temporarily make the paging file even smaller (say both min and max as 256MB)
3)run "Disk Cleanup"
4) followed by "Disk Defragmenter" on the drive. The latter might take all night if you haven't done it in a while.
5) make the paging file to the size you want (512/1GB)

It's ok! It goes over my head too sometimes and this could be said to be my career, last time I checked!

ooh can sound smart for once

It's a kind of high-performance massively parallel computer built
primarily out of commodity hardware components, running a free-software operating system like Linux or FreeBSD, interconnected by a private high-speed network.  It consists of a cluster of PCs or workstations dedicated to running high-performance computing tasks.  The nodes in the cluster don't sit on people's desks; they are dedicated to running cluster jobs.  It is usually connected to the outside world through only a single node.
