Mine

Question: Is there a way to take a screen shot within the game? I have Windows XP

Print screen button. Then paste as new image.

Question #2: With the mods, it is said to put files in your data folder...which data folder... for mods or just the regular data folder?

Put the mods in the file ...galciv/mods/data. If you put them in the galciv/data file you will be unable to switch them off if you need to at some point

Any problems kaz, send me an email

Oh, there will be a pirate visiting, but I am only here to grab one single post for the moment.Get the Diplomatic damage control teams out just in case I helped re-open a can of worms in the General Forum for my opinions on the way empiring and recruiting are being handled. Since DW is kinda like the player liason to Stardock, I thought it was appropriate to come here.I know everybody thought they could just bury the issue after a hasty compromise and a gentleman's agreement a few weeks ago, but it was a temporary fix that may not last. Is this sort of exile really the answer? I am not saying anything crazy like re-integrate the forums or allow total unrestricted recruiting over in the other forum, but I do feel like the empiring community has a valid voice over there on issues just as much as anyone who can post about hating the game or has a Meta problem or bug issues or even wants to talk about the weather. The current fix feels restrictive, like the Secret Police are watching and will pounce on anybody that dares mention the word empire over there. And then we get the few totally anti-empire people. Why do their opinions count for more? I apologize if I help stir up a mess again, but I feel like a cover-up happened a few months ago.

I completely agree. But I would even take a more extreme position that echos that of a particular pirate: I think that this exile is a form of slow death for empires. I myself might not have joined any empire had I not seen MW's post in the GF. Many players are missing out on the empire experience from not reading about it in the GF. I believe that new players now view this empire forum as something out of the mainstream, isolated away from Galciv itself.

From my point of view, i believe that splitting the main forum into two was a sure fire way for stardock to lose most of its active gamers. Segregation has always backfired on the people that impose it eventually. I for one am all for returning to the main forum in a measured way. I do believe though that we should refrain from getting to the stage we were at before we left, where every other post in any thread was a recruitment drive.

Everyone from that era remembers the empire wars that happened as a few members jumped into other empires Now whilst i dont advocate doing that, i must admit it was quite a interesting time to look back on as the threads were teeming with people. These days the threads seem to be populated by a scant few people and as a direct consequence of this all empires are now desperate for new members who are still active!

So i say if you want to start up new threads (the old ones are too long for prospective members to read) then go ahead and do it The people that dont like the idea will just have to get used to not clicking on every thread!

Just my $0.02

Here's an example going the other way. I used to read the GF forum all the time, because our empire thread was there. If I saw an interesting thread title, I would open it. There was a chance I might even participate.

However, now, I hang out only in the empire forum. Every day or two, I might stop by the GF to see if there is anything happening. In general, it is so dead over there that there isn't any desire in me to participate, because participation itself seems to be a misnomer - it seems more like a form of archiving than participating in a live dialog in the GF forum.

I think both empire and general forums are losing a large segment of potential participators because of this effect going both ways.

As a relatively new member, I have to agree with Dream. I had bought the game last summer, played it a bit, but I didn't get involved, and had no idea what empires were about. I thought they were some how multiplaying the game, which I don't like. I pulled out the game again in December. I had few questions, so I posted on the forum. Several players answered my questions and suggested joining an empire, so I investigated further. Boy, I was glad I did that. There was whole community I didn't know about. And I'm sure there are other players who don't realize the community that is here. It is shame that a few have spoiled that for the rest. I imagine, part of the fun was trying to recruit new members...now that is gone.

Now that some time has passed, perhaps together we can come up with a simple solution. I don't see why one thread per empire is too much. We have to have some self control, and be polite to all new players. With AP coming out soon, I imagine there will be a new influx of players, and I would like this solved before then. My 2bc's.

Hey guys we should take this conv. out to the new tread

One of the reasons I joined the Diplomats, was because their private web site forums are extensive, interesting and very well used.
Even by non Diplomats.

Not had the time to investigate other private web sites. I already spend too much time on forums.

Beg your pardon sire, but the time honored convention is that a new "thread" can only be started by the emperor!

I want to inaugurate the "Help Marquesa Download AP" effort since I am disturbed that her AP problems have gone on this long.

What can we do to help, Marquesa? Are these problems related to that mysterious correlation with "Slitherin"? Can you post the logfile you get when your download fails?

hey sloth here's a problem for you in the meantime, i have shortcuts to the threads i read here on my desktop and when i have used them today they keep taking me to a galciv/cmd=logoff? but when i take the URL in them and past them into my browser they work just fine

#1916  by Citizen Embird - 4/7/2004 3:13:52 AM

Thanks for your concern Sloth.

I think the problem lies in the fact that I installed Gal Civ from the CD sent to me and not from a download.

The CD seemed to believe that I had Dregin and I don't.

This is the simple log file.

I have installed the debug gizmo and sent the info to Stardock.
Not keen on posting it here.
For one it is massive and for two, it contains a lot of detail about my computer.

I just tried it and it worked fine for me. Delete one of your desktop links and try recreating it to see if the problem resolves itself.

HTTP Error 8 is classified as an unknown error. For some reason, your system fails to download this zip from the stardock server. It's basically failing in the connection to the server. Since it runs 10 minutes before failing, it sounds as if it makes the initial connection, and then the connection is prematurely closed. What type of internet connection do you have? Is it a broadband connection?
