Aussies are metric and have been for ages; we got decimal currency in 1966 (we used to use the English pounds and pence before that) too. I think the UK is still Imperial, Europe is pretty much metric now. The US is still backwards...er...conservative...er...oops..

I don't know how much emphasis metrics get in today's American primary/secondary education. But it used to be basically ignored.

Well, I know that when I went to high school, you had to learn the basics of the metric system in any science class you were taking, esp. Physics. It is taught in the sciences, at least it was in my school. The metric system makes things a lot easier for calculations like that.

That said, I still think we should remain with the system we have. It has worked fine for us for the past couple of centuries, and it's what everyone is used to.

Here is a good joke from Quebec which was quite popular when the metric system was introduced. I have to write it in french because it is untranslatable. Hopefully, some of you will understand it anyway.

"Avant je faisais l'amour en pied, maintenant je fais l'amour en mètre."

Crazy french people writing jokes that can't be translated!

Actually, now that I think about it, a crazy french-speaking person from France will not understand the joke either. But an english-speaking person living in Quebec should understand it and may a find a way to explain it in english.

I was part way through high school when metric was offically introduced. The hardest part for me was temp. While I knew in my mind that water freezes at 0 C, my body understood 32 F meant I needed a coat. Took a while before the unoffical converstion that goes on in your mind kicked in and 30 C did not mean I needed a coat, it meant I needed a swim.

The rest was simple as I wasn't doing anything that need accuracy. I mean 1 cup is pretty close to 250 ml. a meter is 3" short of a yard, an inch is 2.54 cm and a 500 g is close enough to a lb.

Being in High school i think i can shead some light on this.. In science class we use the metric system for everything. So we at least know the basics and probably more but i couldnt really do any conversions.

Learning the different measuring systems if not very difficult, just some new words to learn and how they can be divided. Getting a mental picture of an object is a different story. The metric system became the official system in Canada while I was in college, so I went through grade school and high school using the imperial system. I don't know all the exact conversion factors, but I know where to look if I need an exact conversion. But I can't imagine what a person looks like if I am told he is 1 m 35 tall and weighs 58 kg. I have to convert to imperial before I can imagine a figure for this person. In the same way, my son can't imagine a person who's 5' 8" tall and weighs 175 pounds. I can cut off 6" of rope without measuring and get it close enough, I can't cut off 15 cm of rope without using a measuring tool.

The brain works in strange ways, at least mine does!

Hello (insert empire name here)!

This is your friendly Metaverse activities coordinator stopping by to remind you about the upcoming tournament. If you haven’t already stopped by The First Clone War thread, please do so now (or I’ll take all your booze). Wild Wombat, Exar Kuun, kasualkid, and other GalCiv overlords are working hard to bring you a new level of imperial pleasure (no, not the kind that goes “ba-a-a-a-a-a”). Team up with other empires no later than February 25th and post your team within The First Clone War thread. Hurry! Only one week left! And remember, since it’s just a game (a game where the losers are the one’s without a team), don’t get picky about who you team up with.

Wow I had to check twice to see if it was our thread

Strange thing about the metric system over 20 years of the metric system in Canada and I still want to state my weight in pounds, have to think twice about how tall I am in cm and still like to measure mileage over litres per 100 Km.

The states seem to be switching over slowly. For example Pop is measured more often than not in litres and bolts are commonly in metric.

Yeah, I don't understand how scores are calculated...

I went up 60,000 pts with my last submission of 50,000. This time I submit another game of 48K and my score appears to have gone down...

Very weird...

Avant je faisais l'amour en pied, maintenant je fais l'amour en mètre

Something to the effect of "I used to make love by the foot, but now I make love by the meter".
Leave it to a Frenchman to come up with something like that.

Ahh, just noticed we got our "citizenry" back.

Paguma,

Your submission on 2/15 bumped 6 games (1/10-1/13) into a prior block. This drastically lowered the division for your most recent block total. It also created a block of scores where there had previously been none (since you had a big gap going back to 11/23), which was why you received more points than the value of your single submission. Your submission on 2/17 only bumped 2 games (1/17 and 1/18) into a prior block. This increased the division for that block while only having a minor adjustment to the division of your current block. Make sense? I’d do the math to check your score for you, but I don’t get paid enough.

(edit: la goof)

That would be a literal translation. The universal translator cannot recongnize the context and selects the primary meaning to form a translation. Any french speaking person would recognize the sentence as a "jeux de mots", I am not sure how it is called in english, a double-meaning sentence? Here "mètre" is phonetically the same as "maitre", and "pied" is used in Québec to mean "incompetence". So the correct translation becomes "I used to make love badly, now I do it with mastery.". The english sentence has no reference to either the imperial or metric system, so the original joke is lost.

And when a one-liner requires a whole paragraph to explain its meaning, it's no longer a joke.

Your right, I live in France and didn't understand the joke.

I will add that in France, we use the expression "comme un pied" to say that we have done a thing ina messy way . So I understand why "pied" can be used in Quebec for incompetence

#346  by Citizen JaxomCA - 2/18/2004 4:43:18 AM

Sorry for this slight thread hijack, fellow Canadians, your regular service is now fully restored.

You know, that's the first time I've read something that actually made sense about how scores are calculated. I had heard of the aging process, but it was always in a vague way.

So that means, someday, Technician is going to have a massive boost when he starts pushing those old "normal" or "beginner" games out, and replaces them with his new Masochistic ones...

Boss...

Check out the link in post #218 on page 9... It's about scoring, decay, yada, yada, yada.

#349  by Citizen Zed F - 2/18/2004 10:05:05 AM

According to my google search, maladresse would translate to clumsiness or blundering. That sounds very similar to what Peace Phoenix implied "comme un pied" would refer to.
