Hi, Damoose

You know yesterday Newfy accused me of being insane.

It's ok. I talk to my alter ego on the forum.

Tech, I think that in you need to start coming to the SA meetings. Not because you are a snack, as you are snack exempt.
But, the 10 step process may help you come to terms with your problem.

I just noticed that Paguma lost 95,000 points from yesterday.

The metaverse is not playing nice!

Well, it looks like Paguma has experienced a recalc, since his last game was a month old

Peace, there seems to be no real schedule to a metaverse recalc or is there? Does it happen on the 30 day block?

If I look at two Guardians at position 15 and 16, they haven't moved in 3 months or more. Dallas hasn't submitted in at least that length of time. Other seem to suffer recalculations while some don't.

#4084  by Citizen NewfyScotian - 8/26/2004 7:24:47 AM

Weyrleader, I just noticed ... congratulations on obtaining 3rd spot!

I hope to get into the top 25 someday and then my next goal would be a million. Who knows by that time it may be the same goal.

I haven't any idea. Maybe there is a random based program at Stardock which targets someone for a recalc

hehe, that is good!

I will just keep plugging away. I think that soon I may follow Qwerks advice and lower my submission rate to be 4 - 6 evenly spread out games per month. I am not sure what kind of damage that will do to my score but we will see.

At that time if my score suffers I may stop playing the metaverse.

Newfy, I hope we are all still around then, but just in case we aren't, I will congratulate you now.

I think Peace said it well in another thread - the more you submit, after a time and you fill up the pipeline an hit the ageing factor, you have to submit more games just to stay even or your score will gradually start drifting to the floor value (based on your highest Metaverse score). At some point, you reach a steady state. You have to play just to stay even.

I was just thinking, sorry I do that from time to time

The open metaverse discussion made me think of MOO2.

From time to time over the years I keep going back to that game. It took me awhile but I did master all the levels of play. I still find that I get an enjoyable game of MOO2 at normal and one at the highest skill level. Mostly I just pick the skill level based on my mood.

When I play GC I find that I like the normal skill level better than MASO. My play is completely different on normal. For GC I play MASO because I get a higher score which increases my Metaverse score. To me MASO is not as fun as Normal. The whole point should be to play for fun ...

I think that I have become addicted to the Metaverse.

What a dilemma I have now ... I think that tonight I will play a normal game and have fun!

Hey Peace,
It occured to me that one could simulate the scoring method with a System Dynamic approach. Are you familiar with System Dynamics? It is a concept developed at MIT and there is a company in New England somewhere that makes a tool that is used to simulate complex systems. It is a non-discrete event type of system, so one does not have to generate random numbers to simulate a system. Parameters could be number of games submitted per game and average score per game and let it simluate out to some another parameter called elapsed time. It then plots you score vs time so one could see what you total playing would be like. You could even make more complex so that the number of games submitted per day was a random number an that after a certain elapsed time it decayed exponentially as you grew tired of the game.

Sounds nice, but I am not sure about the use for metaverse since it is a disrete system with a 'simple' formula.

The System Dynamics can be used in any system, simple or complex. Here is a link to the System Dynamics Society http://www.systemdynamics.org/ Link

Here is the link to the program http://www.raczynski.com/pn/simball.htm Link
Although this is not the program I was looking for, it is similar.

Paguma lost his Metaverse saving throw, ouch.

Newfy, your discussion on what makes the game fun for you strikes a chord for me. My games are abysmally long from a Metaverse point of view (about 6-8 hours per game). But they are a rich story for me.

For some, the Metaverse converts this turn-based strategy game into a real-time (read as real world time)pointfest (nothing wrong with that). I had my fill of real-time games when I was younger. I prefer a turn-based game (I play the game not the Meta). I have faith that the Metaverse can be a place for ALL player types (point hounds and casual players). I have no idea why the aging process isn't applied consistently to all the non-actives. If it is designed to be "random" then some might argue that it is a "feature" of the Metaverse (kind of like a Metaverse anomaly). If not, then it should be a simple fix. Whichever way it turns out it's not going to affect my next game because for me, "The Game Is The Thing". I played hundreds of game of MOO1&2 with not a Metaverse in sight.

Man... Such discussion... and all started with a simple good morning.

So her'e my 2 BC. I hate maso and I hate the 'verse. I found myself playing more for the points than the fun... so I stopped playing.

I suppose I could go back to playing a lesser difficulty... but I know too much now to make it a challenge. So another reason not to play.

I could load up all the mods and play that way... but work through all the ID conflicts is time consuming and error prone. Yeah wait for the next version of the Writer... I hear you. But Sloth is missing in action.

Bottom line... I have no real incentive to play so I just drop by the boards during the day.

Old GC players never die... they just age away.

This is where you made your mistake, damoose, assuming that saying good morning is just something simple, not realizing what event you put in motion because you spoke those fatefull words.
