Here is the way the game went done.
GC 1.3 two majors left Torians and Drengin empire.

They got a stupid event where they had to go to war against each other.

They were both close to me so I picked Aliance and ended the game.

Would of it been better to wait let them get weak from their war then Ally with the winner ?

I have an interesting Gigantic game going... I culture flipped the biggest empire (Arcean) to the point they were pretty weak. At the same time I turned all the other races against him (He was twice as big as the next empire, which was me). So he was pretty much in ruins when I attacked him. The first turn afer attacking him he decided to surrender to me.

I did a culture flip in one sector in the middle of the Yor's territory. Soon after that, he surrendered to me.

So now we have the Drengin in the top left corner, pretty much useless. I'm letting him live, just to help me fight my two real adversaries. I let the Altarians get too strong, and his ally the Torians have gotten signficant too. At one point both of their militaries were bigger than mine. I built a terror star fully loaded with military and defensive upgrades and decided to gather my fleet in that sector since I kept getting ambushed everywhere else. It worked like a charm, soon I was the best military in the galaxy again, and I am able to keep getting the Torians to forget about the war.

Seems kind of stupid that they declare war because they are allies with the Altarians, but then will make peace immediately every time.

Anyway, so I'm about to start pummeling the Altarians and that's when I get a (so far) unrecoverable error.

This game has been way more militarilistic than usual. Ironically, I'll likely get less points than my usual "military" wins because this game has gone on for ever. I think you get penalized for long games don't you?

Yep. The game still has several issues/loopholes of this kind. I asked Cari about them months ago, and she said they're on the To Do list, so I haven't bugged her about it again since then. Whether or not they get fixed, I don't know, but they DID fix the disappearing graphics bug, so there may yet be hope.

Hey, nice digs in here. Cozy and warm, despite the cold outside. You Canucks know how to keep a warm hearth, I'll give you that.

And now you know what all the heaters are for.

I don't think so. You get points for population size, so the longer the game the more population the more points. And the more of the tech tree you finsh the more points. So keeping the AI alive longer get you more points.

I keep mine alive by giving away tech and money and ships once I am friendly or ally with them. Like I've said before... I milk it for all the points I can get.

Once you get an infulence resourse or two... the flips start however, the game ends quickly.

I just had this happen in the game I'm currently playing. Not enough spying on each other.

Aside: I've now had games where spying gets me tech from all the majors not just the Drengin. But it's late game techs and you need to have been speding lots and lots of BCs. Basically you start when you meet the major and by early 'late' game you start getting techs.

Would of it been better to wait let them get weak from their war then Ally with the winner ?

Depends on how long you want to play. You can go for the quick score or let it play out to the end. The longer you let it go the points you get though.

I think they added a penalty for time because people were abusing what you just said to rack up higher scores. Unfortunately, in some cases, like mine, really difficult games, that should be more points, end up generating less.

I startd a game Earth was 21 the system next to it had a planet class 26. Wow

#34  by Citizen damoose - 2/2/2004 12:28:41 PM

Cool. Not often that happens. I consider my self lucky if Earth's a 17 and it has one other habitable planet.

#35  by Citizen Paguma - 2/2/2004 2:13:25 PM

One of the games I played a couple weeks ago had about 10 habitable planets within 2 sectors of earth, and no AI around to get there first. That was very weird, and one of my easiest victories.

We Canadians live in a blind spot about our identity. We have very strong feelings about who we aren't but only weak ones about who we are. We're passionate about what we don't want to become but oddly passive about what we should be.

What is someone from Virginia doing reading MacLeans?

I live in Canada and the only time I read it is when waiting for a Dentist/Doctor/Optomitrist appointment. It seems to be on their required subscription list or something.

It's amazing what a search for Famous Quotes Canada will deliver.

Paguma,

Any luck getting your game past the CTD.

I was thinking if you have some ships moving automatically you may want to halt the movement of you ships at least for a few turns. I seen crashes a long time ago with survey ships manually change directions I get past the crash.

Theoden... Interesting thing about the quote... It's true. Kind of a 'whatever' type attitude. And that is quintessencal Canadian.

You know the class 26 planet I mentioned above received a planet improvement event to class 35

When I finished the game with soil enhancement, habit improvement, teraforming, enhanced and advanced teraforming, the Teraformer the planet was a class 50

What a great planet I was poping off Wonders and Trade Goods every 3 to 5 turns. Guess it will be a long time before I ever luck out again.

No I haven't tried that. I submitted the saved games to CariElf yesterday with the .cra file.

While waiting for a response I can try turning off the auto moves on my ships, but you realize, ALL my ships are on automove!

Of course the Terror Star moving multiple spaces probably doesn't help either...

I'm having some difficulty getting an answer about my question about the difference in buying AP individually as opposed to Drengin.net (in regards to post subscription bug fixes)... If I knew they were treated the same, I'd probably subsribe to Drengin.net now. I'm curious about large maps with the extra two races!

BTW, we have our eyes on thomasdegagne who late last month posted an impressive win.

If he can post another one or two and hit 60,000 points I'll welcome him to the unelected and useless Senate!

Too bad I can not advise on if Drengin.net is worth the money. As per other games on the Drengin.net the selection is not great but I think I will renew just to see what Stardock comes out with next.

The AP does seem to force new strategies, the starbase Fee have minors not giving me loads of cash but I really am looking forward to exploring the AP.

Well... I haven't subscribed to .net either. However, I have had a subscription to Object Desktop for years. Based on my observations... Updates are supplied for the individual programs at the same rate as for the OD subscribers. The difference is the OD subscribers get them slightly, 1-2 weeks earlier. Based on the experiences with Stardock as a company, I have no reason to suspect they will not supply patches for AP the same way. Also OD subscribers get access to multiple betas. Hummm sounds familiar.

Anyway don’t know if this was a help or not but here it is.

I’m probably not going to subscribe to the net, because frankly at this point the only game I’m interested in is the AP. And I can wait for it to arrive.

I hope your keep track… Because I’m look forward to your analysis on the differences between 1.1x and the AP.

For the Glory of the Emperor Paguma and the Good of the Empire I sacraficed 20 mins of lunch time to... Ah... forget it... I submitted another maso to the 'Verse.

This does several things...
First, at the time of of submission I ranked 101.
Second, it upped my average dificulty to Tough.
Third, it proves it wasn't just blind luck the first time around
And finally it added some number of points (not sure how many beacuse I can't keep up with all the different recalcs) to our empire score in the 'Verse.

Gotta keep up the Jones' or is that the RBers.
