Hummm... You can win by culture but it takes a heck of a long time and you have to use PPs in one form or another. Which means managing your economy, yada, yada, yada.

With the newest patch cultural attacks are so difficult there is no point in attempting it, so in my opinion, they just eliminated that path of attack. Certainly it needed to be re-vamped but rather than fix the problem, they broke it the other direction.

If your are really desesperated, you could always save and reload

This is exactly what I did do

drop 3 or 4 60K games in an 8 hr period.

Sometimes more. Yesterday morning we were close to the Guardians by night time they had a pad that we will never close.

But we are the Undead when they least expect it we will pounce

Exactly what Stardock did with trading Technology for cash.

Lets see people sell one tech get 100BC for 20months.
OK solution we will not allow techs to be sold at any price !!

Canadians, congratulations on your run up the Empire charts. I was thinking that if I didn't have the statbot to work on as an excuse, I wouldn't have any excuse for not playing - and defending the precious MWC fields (turf).

KKid... Thanks. It's hard when your one of the few playing... I know. If it weren't for our own part Yor player Tech (He's a machine)... And the Boss of course... We'd be out of the top 10 so fast it'd make your head spin.

So where are all the farmers?

I agree completely, and they made it even worse with the minors, not letting them trade at all!

Dunno. Since we are a quiet bunch - except for me sometimes, there isn't a bunch of talking. If there isn't any talking, then there is no way to communicate, or know if your communication is working.

I have sent out a call to arms via the member's emails. No-one responded - not that I asked them to.

There are a few playing, like zyk00001 and we have submitted 18 games - not near enough to be competitive tho.

Tech whoring for cash was just too easy IMHO at any level

I agree. Trading tech for tech is much more fun too, more diplomacy, more interesting game than just racing up tech tree for cash. I haven't heard too much on how others are treating trade goods now. Trade goods are not selling well for me, but I'd rather keep them anyway, less bonus for the AI.
Tech mentioned the evil interface, I agree, the buttons are not clear. And yes, damoose, I need to learn to use the keyboard short cuts more.

Well, I just made my comments in the main forum for the AP build. I don't participate much in the main forums anymore. I just feel that my opinions seem to be a minority right now, and that's discouraging.

Broke it in the other direction... That's a good way to put all the changes recently. Although they came close with the culture SBs I think.

I don't. I don't think the previous method was as bad as the fact the AI did not react. If the AI reacted it would have been impossible to take them out anyway. I often culture bombed races much stronger than me. If they detected my attacks, they would have kicked my butt. All my starbases were built without defenses, they would have been helpless if they just would attack.

The current method makes it almost impossible to even try this method of attack, and to me that's worse. We shouldn't eliminate options or strategies. Of course, Stardock has done this with the minors and tech trading, another perfect example from Technician. Instead of making them smarter so people didn't take advantage of them, they just eliminated the option completely.

I've read a couple of accounts of succesful cultural attacks now. In both those cases, a planet was in the sector where the attack originates, even if it's a token crappy planet just to get the initial cultural standing.

This sort of makes sense, I'll try this tonight. I'll just make sure I save the game first, so I don't ruin a potential win if it doesn't work.

#1040  by Diplomat Technician - 3/15/2004 11:15:55 AM

Create a colony on class 10 planet just to create a cultural bomb.

#1041  by Citizen Paguma - 3/15/2004 11:28:48 AM

Well it's possible you could have a class 12-14 lying around. They don't colonize those until late in the game.

It appears that culture bombing from sectors with no planets is no longer possible. That's what I was trying when it failed miserably.

I can sort of see where that makes sense. The modules are supposed to increase your cultural influence, if it's next to nil to begin with, well, we all know what happens when you multiply large numbers by 0. Or at least, we all should know.

Wasn't it strange to be able (in previous versions) to boost your influence from nothing

It's never really nothing, but it obviously was very low. Of course, I suppose it could be so low that it rounds off to 0.

BTW is there a way to see cultural influence for the various races in a sector? I know the sector turns the color of the dominant race, but is there a way to view the actual values?

On the upper right you'll see a multicolored square. Click on it.

There's a small button at the top of the screen next to the mini-map with four small colors on it. That gives the number figures.

Valid tactic. I mean after all aren't your people will to sacrifice themselves for the good of the empire?

Like the Boss and Pheonix said... Multiplying something by zero or close to zero should net you something close to zero. You need something to start with. Makes sense in the game context I think.

If the AI reacted

They do react. Have a hunt through the Gaurdians thread for yesterday, several people have noticed culture bases from the AIs, as have I. Unfortunately however you still end up with the same result as they aren't effective. The AI does not react fast enough and spread out insted of concentrated to counter your cultural concentration.
