Well, I just started another game, with the difficulty upped a bit- all AIs on bright, large map. I'm going the opposite extreme this time: no tech whoring, and the trade ships just keep coming in from everybody. At the high point of the curve, I have 70%+ spending with 20% taxes. Unfortunately, the morale is fairly low right now, as I concentrated on techs other than morale boosters, and there hasn't been a chance for a good ole fashioned war, so I haven't built too many transports in an effort to keep my maintenance down. Once again, it appears its going to be me versus either Drengin or Torians. Altarians surrendered to Tor, Yor got a crappy starting position (with two planets this time. I find myself between Tor (w/5 systems, and the Drengin (w/7 systems), I have the same number as the Drengin. I'm keeping up on tech, and all my worlds have at least a couple of defenders, and a corvette on patrol to their credit. Now, who do I hit first, the Tor or the Drengin. Note, the Drengin are the strongest both economically and militarily, so ideally I'd get the Tor and Arceans onto my side with the smackdown, and possibly the minor races.
Shootin's gonna start soon, though.
This time it took a year and a half to scout out my area and claim the 7 systems (12-13 actual colonies). I started the tech push about the same time, and I'm in the middle of the pack at the moment, same as militarily. I've also paid off the Drengin a bit, as the other major threat are the 'kinder, gentler conquerors' and I'm on friendly terms with them. 20% of their income'll do it. I really don't want to have to show those little ETs the stick again though.
If I win this game, I'm gonna get my first two medals, 'cause I've never gotten less than 2,000 on a win, and I've got four of 'em right now.

I might be wrong, but I think the 5 games w/ 1000 points is from the days when you only got about 400 points a game. The medal was earned by playing 5 games and having a Meta score of 1000.

RoJo... Just finished the shadow thread. You're doing pretty good over there like I said earlier. |
|
Please forgive me for asking, what thread are you talking about here? I can't seem to find it.
Your last post on the GSE... You need to go with what you think. Not what you think Bam Bam will say about your choice. Bam Bam is an excellent moderator... tough but fair |
|
What or where is GSE and what is the topic here?

Oh but they're so flavorful with those 11 herbs and spices.

Welcome Sjet-Sa, ask your questions and we will help you as much as we can. Also there are plenty of other empires that will help you as well.
I thought I would throw my .00002 cents in (US curency converted to CDN). This is long and others "will" have different opinions. Remember that there is no perfect strategy but what works for you.
I play tiny maps with abundant and tight clusters mostly because my computer is very slow.
I start with Federalist for production bonuses
My bonus settings are;
Social +50
Military +30
Diplomacy +20
I set all the AI to Genius which makes the game level set to crippling. I stopped trying to play MASO on tiny as it seems to be impossible for me.
My tax is set to 39% and my spending is set to 100%.
When playing Tiny, I typically only get 1 to 3 starting planets (not nessecarily systems). This means that I set my spending to 30 Social and 70 research. I need my research for tech whoring. I will adjust these settings when I am able to build 2 - 3 trade goods. Then I flip flop the settings.
I tech whore as much as possible. You never get much but every little bit helps. When I play tiny my strategy is to find all the AI as fast as possible especially the Alexians (minors) because they pay the best.
I sell every thing but try not to buy anything. I do not go after the propulsion techs right away. Let the AI get them, then buy controlled gravity several years into the game so you can build the trade good gravity accelerators.
The build queue for social production is important. It is pretty much standard fare and listed in several threads. You have to be careful not to build things that drain your economy.
When you get TRADE send out 1 freighter to each of the weekest AI so you can keep them friendly with you.
I usually attack and wipeout the strongest or second strongest AI when I can build transports and starfighters. Then I regroup and go after the weaker AIs.
I can usually win a game in about 2 hours sometimes as much as 3 if I get a really bad start.
Disclaimer:
This strategy is not fully listed here and it is an amalagmation of other peoples strategies. I play a much different game on medium maps, although I do not play medium very often.
Notes: I always (now at least) try to end up Good. But I take the good for me alignment events when they happen. About half way througth the game I start taking the good alignment picks regardsless of what they do to me. Sometimes I even get up to pure goody two shoes.
Keep a close watch on the AI's tech. If they are hostile to you and suddenly they get battleship or any better ship tech (than you have) consider going to war immediately before they can build these ships.
Take out any military resource starbases of the AI you are about to go to war against before you actually attack any of their ships. This weakens them. Bring along some constructors and take over the starbase before you attack and you will be stronger.
Hang spare constructors at AI owned starbases so if they are destroyed you can take them over right away.
A big one (for me at least) when building colony ships early in the game do not load too many colonists on these ships. A new colony will populate quick enough but your established colony needs the population more for taxes and social / military projects.
I can go on but I think I will take a break and have some barbequed Torian baby back ribs.
Just have fun!

OK ... OK
I want to add a couple more things;
Other than the Diplomacy tech I never sell any other diplomacy type techs. Having a lead in Diplomacy is benificial no matter what type of game you play.
The social build queue is important. (I said before). But just as important is canceling projects on planets that you take over to retain the social projects that you want. This will save you money.
A little thing about Luck that I have noticed. Luck is great at the lesser than crippling and tough levels because it usually will allow you to get 1 or more Ranger ships sometime when every one is just starting to build battle ships.
Minors do not surrender. This is can be exploited to your benifit. Will explain later. I can't give everything away.
I really am finished with this topic for now

Thanks, I am following the latest game now. Very interesting. One of these days when Doom 3 gets released I will upgrade my computer. Until then I will only be able to view these large games. Yes, I am and always was an iD fanatic. I luv DOOM and will continue to wait painfully to upgrade my computer
