It does help reduce the chance of p*ssing off the AI through a random event that leads to war.

They're just a nuissance. |

I agree.

And one thing is important on gigantic maps: trade means lots of cash |
|
Peace, do you build starbases loaded with trade centers along your trade routes to keep the cash flow high? |
|
No. I just rely on the fact that mini freighter travel at 1 parsec per turn, with 12 parsecs in a sector and something like 10 sectors between the 2 planets. Starbase would be too expensive for the gain (unless using TS trade center) and I don't build constructors
And don't forget that freighters have the greatest range, so they are nice for finding AI on gigantic map

Here is a question I ponder now and then ...
Is there much of a benefit to spying? I almost never do it. I am pretty sure that sometimes I can acquire techs by spying but I have not done that since I started playing Crippling. Does it work with MASO?
To me it just seems to be a waste of money. |

Well, I was able to get some tech through spying on maso level. But since your total spending on spying is compared to their population (if I remember correctly a post of Frogboy), it is hard to gain tech. More, they need to have tech you don't have AND have a population that could be spyied (i.e. you need to be able to put enough BC for their population).
Sure, invading a planet is a better way to gain missing tech. And don't forget that flipping planet doesn't give you tech. But it will help as it reduce their population
Some benefits of spying:
- avoid the insult leader event (leading to a war). It could happen between AI.
- know their stats, their current research and their trade routes.

Almost made a critical mistake. I was so busy with the starbases I almost forgot "THE TRADE ROUTES". |
|
And on gigantic map, trade routes could give huge amount of cash.
