Special Forces Press Release:

"The departure of Overlords Terl and Greldon from the FOTR fleets has apparently reduced their strength below the level to stand on an even footing with SF. Though no official peace overture has been received, open battles between SF and FOTR have ceased.

"Meanwhile, sensor drones shaped suspiciously like huge filing cabinets, along with several Aston-Martin, BMW and Peugeot corvettes, have been seen along the outskirts of SF space. We must assume that these are advanced scouts for the European armada. Though war has not been officially declared, relations are 'wary' and falling like a rock. Caution is advised."

Special Forces offers an unconditional peace treaty to the FOTR as of this date. This war has been destructive for both sides, and we both face an imminent danger from the European forces. Besides, after relations are normalized, we can resume trade. We miss that pipeweed.

Though I'm merely an overlord, SF regulations permit diplomacy to be conducted by any available party if the need is pressing and our noble Emperor is in the loo.

Ah, a ceasefire! That sounds wonderful!
Unfortunately, with our Emperor Ray unavailable for comment, our Regent Theoden gone, and our emergency backup leader Greldon also gone, no-one is available to sign your peace treaty. Let me check our constitution to see what happens now... Hm... It looks like the war must continue until every one of us is dead. Hey ho.

Hmm, that sounds like a flaw in your system. Uh oh.

Ours however is slightly "different". Decisions are made by anyone handy at the time who just hopes Yoda doesn't give him a kicking for making the wrong one Or on the contentious ones we let Arclite do it and hide behind him

#406  by Citizen KEmperor - 2/15/2004 4:15:36 PM

Well, I would characterize it more as the majority of the avalible council members decide, and just wait a couple of days to see if Yoda agrees.

#407  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/15/2004 4:20:38 PM

Maybe Arclite could join the Fellowship and take over running it for a while?

Toilet diplomacy wins again: it's the only way to run an Empire

#409  by Veteran Theoden of Rohan - 2/15/2004 4:25:18 PM

Though I'm very happy for the Guardians, I really am sad to see the Fellowship going through these hard times. Hopefully, our two empires will continue to enjoy the fun and camraderie we've shared over the last several months.

I'm rather sick at the moment, fighting off some stomach thing, so I'm going back to bed.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhh, not Mr. Furious again, blub blub blub [at the mention of a toilet Exar retreats into the corner and sobs/whimpers quietly, even shaking occasionally at the memory of his last "session" with Mr. Furious]

Sorry to see folks go but that happens. Thanks for being an empire member Greldon & Terl. If you had to leave at least you are joining Theoden.

I have another 60k gig maso in the pipeline - probably tomorrow. I can't remember how often the FotR has gone over 4 million and then back under lately. .

I read the 1.19 posts from Cari & Frogboy. It does sound harder especially on gigantic maps. At this time I really get my trade started as early as possible to get the money going fast. Too often the Alexians get blasted before we can trade so I am used to that. The logisitics sounds like you biff one race at a time with alpha-strike terror stars and decommision "used" party palaces and terror stars. Sounds like we might have to fine-tune economics and it might take longer to play.

But with the AP beta only 2 weeks away, there is no rush to upgrade at this moment. The suicidal level sounds cool. The more AI opponents the merrier. My hardest games are when one race runs away with the game (sort of like Matthew's single opponent game). Maybe AP will make this less likely and that would be great.

Other than the Alexians becoming tightwads too, any other changes in minors?

Fellowship can you have a look at the alliance tournament thread are you guys up for joining in? It could be a good laugh

#413  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/16/2004 6:40:55 AM

Minors seem a little tougher, but maybe I'm imagining it. You can still extort money from the newly spawned minors later on. That's my current plan for the late game; wait for the Sanderians, surround them with a human shield of ships to protect them from my allies, and then exploit them for all they're worth.

One more difference I've noticed is that you no longer seem to get planetary events when you colonise PQ < 12 worlds. I think you do get more general events, though. I managed to get my morality up to 100 in a Tiny game.

It's a bit worrying if people are leaving this empire because there's no-one to talk to... How many of our 87 members are still active, I wonder?

When stated the way you did, it may seem odd, yet, the empire experience is more than just an additional icon next to your medals, at least to me. I desired an active forum and active players. To me a large part of the Metaverse empires experience is the comraderie. If you scan back through the thread you will see the activity. Check the empire page and click on names...Of the 80+ members there are over 20 with zero score. There are quite a few with no postings in quite some time.

Usually I hear that a fight stops because there are no soldiers left to fight... (except when the political reasons for the war are met, thks Mr Clausewitz) It is the first time however that I see a fight go on due to the lack of leaders to declare peace !

I've been away for a few days, and yet many changes! Goodbye Terl & Greldon. These walls will certainly feel quite empty now that you're both gone. Silence seems to be echoing here now.

I didn't say it was odd. I said it was worrying. It seemed a very sensible reason, but I knew that such things were likely to snowball; if you left because there was no-one to talk to, then without you there'd be even less people to talk to, and we'd end up losing other people for the same reason. This is exactly what has happened since then. So, either we must attract some fresh blood, or merge with some other alliance, or abolish the Fellowship and find new homes, or risk becoming a legacy alliance, where all the members are retired from active participation.

Mind you, we're still ranked third, well ahead of the Jedi, and this is actually a reasonably lively thread at the moment, with lots of visitors, so it's too soon to be writing an epitaph just yet.

Ah, I misstated with the word odd. Anyway, what you cited above are exactly what I was seeing. Ray has been absent for quite a while and has not posted a game since December. I know many are waiting for AP but I wonder, even if the boards light up again, for how long would that be. I went through the empire list and clicked on names. There are a lot who have played maybe one or two games and have done nothing since last summer.

This is unfortunatly a common thing in large empires. If you look at G.R.O.S.S. or MWC youll see the same thing.

For me, it was the lack of participation on the forums more than number of games submitted. Many days it was Theoden, Terl, Me, and visitors that were the only ones posting. The reason I joined an empire was to interact with fellow members. Otherwise I'd simply remain unaffiliated and just post scores. Heck....I could be an empire of one and be in 15th or 16th place right now! ....but I prefer to interact with my teammates because it adds another dimension to the game, IMHO.

They're quite closely linked. Chatting to people on these forums makes me want to play GalCiv again, and submitting games makes me want to check out the forums for activity. People who retire from playing frequently retire from the forums too.

This is what keeps me wanting to play too. I like the idea that if i have a problem theres someone here who can answer it. Also meeting new people through empires is fun.

#424  by Veteran Terl - 2/16/2004 11:52:59 AM

That was my point also. I like both the game and the interaction on the forums. It is fun to discuss strategies, roleplay a little, and just have fun with members both in and out of your own empire.
