Quote from the "other" thread:

#517 by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/18/2004 6:35:16 AM Yes, but the Russians weren't facing Excalibur-class warships.

True, but things did look pretty desperate for them. And the propective of surrendering to the nazis was not very appealling to russians, considering what they did to them.
Now try and imagine what Arceans would do to "lowly" humans ! No, surrender is not an option.
I just remembered the "Galaxy Quest" movie (it's a kinf of parody (is this english?) of star trek). Their motto was: Never give up, Never surrender!
It would seems that my situation is so desperate that only a parody could describe it accuratelly

I'd make peace with the Arcs if at all possible, set up a load of trade routes, then (a) build a lot of anti-matter missiles, or (b) build a load of constructors.
Why are we having our discussions on someone else's thread?

Tonight I'll make a savegame and start a "Mathew Downie Alternate Universe", where I'll do as you suggest .
IMy concern with this strategy is that they'll recover much faster than I do, except if I manage to take out these tree stars. that would open a lot of possibilities. And allow for some not-crazy hope of victory.

I'm not talking about surrender. I'm talking about a truce, followed by massive treachery.

it's a kinf of parody (is this english?)

Except for the word 'kinf', yes.

I'd be kind of interested to try out your savegame myself. Through experience or luck, I never seem to get a single all-powerful enemy, just moderately powerful foes who spend all their time fighting each other until I'm ready to take them down... though I'm not sure my current email system could handle a GalCiv save.

I understood what you meant. My fear is that truce will be more helpfull to them, and they'll emerge from it stronger (in relative terms)

very cunning

If any one suggests it is not a very honorable tactic, remember them that, "In war, nothing is more honorable than victory".

I can send it to you, that is, if you don't mind playing a lowly "painful" instead of your usual maso games . I have several for this game (one for every turning point of the story -- or after and before a war event).

I don't think the're very big, once compressed: I play medium maps only. And I've sent some to Cari several times, it was quite small emals (in ko terms I mean)

That was an awesome movie!!!

Hey, Downie...did you get any email from me lately?

Yes. Was discussing it with ric.
I'm basically in favour of an alliance if you can find us a credible third empire. I think we'll be trounced by the opposition, but as long as I don't care, that's not a problem.

It sounded like you didn't have much to lose. Wars are much easier if you're the aggressor. In peacetime, you can get a fleet right up to his planet without it being attacked.

I've got about 1 MB free in my mailbox, so if you can get the save in, I'm:
matthew_downie@yahoo.com Email
I don't mind it being only painful difficulty - with the situation you're in, it'll be harder than any of my regular games.

Why look for a credible empire when an incredible one would do? Plenty of folks left and they are not all big guns. Some of those rank 11 through 25 empires have a lot of potential. And trounced or no, the fight is sometimes worth more than the win. Jump on in and have some fun. Darn the results, full speed ahead! Just Gerakken's odd advice for the day.

True, I hadn't considered that point of view

true too. Not very friendly though. But who cares about friendly, after all this is about galactic domination. They'll be friendly enough when we win...

I'll send it to you tonight (in 2 or 3 hours, since tonight may not mean anything to you...). I'm at work now, though I'm sure it doesn't show .

I guess if you make enough mistakes and bad turns you end up with a very difficult game...

only painful difficulty

Good morning.

Have another 60k in the pipeline and got a good start this time - in the middle of the map. Maybe done in the next 3 days pending those RLT (real-life things).

I am hooked on gigantic now but control-N is helpful for that 19 or 20 Sol and some position near the middle. Sounds like control-N will get more important in the newer versions with logistics where the range-extending starbases might cost more. Hmmm . . . any comments?

The control-N so you can get near the center and speed picks make the gigantic map seem smaller.

I have noticed some 60k games on huge suicidial on 1.49. Interesting scoring change - is this a mpts bonus for facing 7 incredible major AI's instead of just 5 we face in 1.2 and under?

Nastavnik, thanks for posting. It is good to see posts from folks who have little gold rings in the lower left corner.

Rick,

From what I gather, ver 1.49 has a scoring boost due to the 2 extra Incredible races. I don't even think you have to get a military victory on a Huge/Suicidal to get 60k (or at least close to it).

Yes. I've heard it claimed that some people with AP Beta can play a 60K game in an hour.

I understand that there are few of us left...
However the game (1.19) I have "on the pipe" is nowhere near 60k, except if I can have it for fighting for a lost cause till the end

When I play AP, my feeling is that my metaverse scores are considerably higher

Interesting. If AP has a scoring boost, I've got a couple ideas on how to do that myself... I'll give them a try and report back. Probably not until Friday though.

No! No! Gerakken runs in terror from the thoughts of even more score inflation.

Ah yes, you're one of those fossils with 50 point Metaverse scores.
