I'm going to start writing my own morality events. There's too many where if you click the good option, you only get 1 point of goodness. I'm perfectly willing to suffer 40% morale penalties on my worlds, I just hardly ever get the chance.

And what if you keep only the morality events that boost goodness?

I dunno. I've only just started looking at what you can do in this area. I'm still trying to get the Hawaii 5-0 GalCiv Writer to work.

I noticed this too. i was wondering if I could edit them and increase the number of points gained (and the cost or penality). Do you know if it is easy to do and whether or not that will cause metaverse problems when submitting?
I've been thinking of doing some of my own, with the galciv writer, but I don't know if there are any problems in using it with the latest build. I'm not much of a modder

Edit: I hadn't seen the messages in this page. So you're having touble with the galciv writer?

Matthew,

Just in case...

I suggest you dl and install version 1 of GalCiv Writer, then do the upgrade.

GalCiv Writer does not knop anything about the 'mods' folder. It assumes all the mods are in the directories along with the base GalCiv install stuff.

I don't think that increasing points will really help you: you still need to have the morality event that you want . So you should begin with keeping all morality events that allow an huge goodness burst .

Well, I've fiddled with the files, added two new events, removed a couple of events I don't like, and tried to increase the weighting of some others. Let's see how it goes. I'll try a maso medium/rare game.

Anyone has heard from Ray???? There is something wrong with his score. Check his individual score and the one for the empire is like almost 100k difference affecting the empire.

Yeah, but I don't want to imbalance the game and cheat to get to pure good (that wouldn't be very consistent, no ? )
I mentionned that because some of the events seem to have been defined for earlier versions, where there wan't so much money maybe (what's 8 to 20bc in a game for choosing the good option). So if I increase to an huge (but reasonnable) amount of money, the good choice becomes a painful one, but still morally "necesssary".
I think I've never seen a "good choice" cost so little (except in galciv): saving universal health care in France (good) would cost several billions (and the State doesn't have a treasury of 30000 billions) maintaining retiring age at 60 (good too) would cost another several billions. Not exploiting third world countries by paying them a decent price for their products would cost even more. But since that's a very expensive good choice to make, most of the times governments stick with the "bad" choice (which in my view are Bad choices and bad choices).

Is that simple to do Matthew? What do you use to open those files?

#659  by Diplomat Peace Phoenix - 2/24/2004 9:08:40 AM

What do you use to open those files?

Since they are text files, any simple text editor will do the trick . The only thing is that lots of things are referenced by an id. English.str can help for the id of the ability. The problem isn't to open the file, the problem is to understand what are in the files

And if I know theses kind of things, it is because I have done lots of cut and paste between english 1.20 flies and french 1.12 files

Ok, thks Peace Phoenix. I saw it was txt files, but (in Medieval Total War for instance) sometimes when you open it with notepad, the data loses its format. (columns etc).

I think that you will backup the files before editing them. Just for the case ...

Yes, I'll remember that . I even do that now before udating galciv.
BTW, Have you had any problems with SDC latelly? I keep having a window telling me that "there is a script error in that page, do I want to keep etc...". it only happens when I connect through SDC, everything is fine through IE.

Usually that happens when a file gets corrupted. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it agagin couple of times and it came back OK.

Thks Mayito, I'll try that too

Haven't had much luck so far. In my maso/medium game, I have had time to research every tech and still have an alignment of 79. (There was a cool ingame event, +12PQ on lots of uncolonised planets, of which I got about nine.) Not sure if I want to submit it... I did get one of my new morality events, but it didn't help as much as I thought. I still don't really understand certain things:-
How can you tell what effect the event will have on alignment? Is it just a question of having a big percentage change?
How do you get rid of existing events, since deleting them from CoreEvents.EVENT didn't do it?
Why does Gal Civ Writer v130 say that all my events are READ ONLY?
What is the mods directory for?

Got an email recently. He's still in GalCiv retirement, heavily involved in Star Chamber.

Ah, I understand better now. I missed out the ones in bonusevents. And I can edit the READ ONLY ones by selecting Edit from the menu. I ought to have more success next time.

The percentage change is important. There's some field for "morality weight" or something like that, but it doesn't seem to do much as far as I can tell. Also, the stat affected is important. Choosing to lose money is typically guaranteed to get you a +10 in morality.

#670  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/24/2004 3:03:48 PM

Yeah, and I noticed that a -15% diplomacy penalty seems to give you only 1 alignment shift.

I went back to that game after removing and tweaking some more events, and just kept hitting next turn (with autosave off for extra speed) until I got enough events for morality 100. Took me until 2218. In the meanwhile, I played games with the new minors who appeared and the Arceans, the only remaining major. When he declared war on the Sanderons, I gave them a couple of Excaliburs, which they used to destroy all his ships and starbases. Then I stole the free resources. I've refined my new-minor-exploitation technique - I was able to get tributes like 11,000 BC per turn for 40 turns. In future games, I reckon I'll be able to afford a terror star alpha strike if I want. In this game, I tried to spend it by building all improvements on all my planets. I still ended up on 1.2 million BC. Having got to pure good, I built three or four party palaces in each of the Arceans' sectors. He got angry and demanded one off me every turn, but I just bought them back off him for pocket change, 12,000 BC or so, until he flipped.
Sorted.

Matthew,

Have you read this thread http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GM&id=39847 Link on events in the the Mods forum?

#672  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/24/2004 3:41:45 PM

I'd still be interested to know what is the minimum change needed for each attribute in order to guarantee a change of ten.
I've added some new events that cost money. Hope this doesn't bankrupt me next game...

Our colonists have discovered an adorable fluffy kitten, with sad eyes. What should we do, oh mighty emperor?

(Good) It's so cute! Spend 200BC on buying a ribbon to make it look even more pretty!

(Neutral) While we are naturally in favour of kindness to kittens in general, we feel there is little we can do in the present financial climate. (-1% Morale penalty).

(Evil) Shave the kitten! Then force it to work in our factories! Then shoot it! Twice! (+36% Planet Quality bonus).
