Anyone want to challenge me to write a poem with the subject and style of their choice?

Subject: An attack on a Yor Starbase
Style: Kipling

Or...

Subject: Battle of Helm's Deep
Style: Danielle Steele

That should keep him busy for a while...

Don't know much about Kipling, but I'll give it a go:

The Yor Wars

The ships of Sol and Centauri and Severus
To Cygni and Westerfield and Lacaille pass across;
And in each of those runs there's not a cubic yard
Where the Humans and Yor haven't fought and fought hard!

If the ships that were lost could leave warp-trails again,
They'd stretch like a web from system to system,
And we'd see, as we crossed, every pattern and plan
Of every ship built since space-fighting began.

There'd be fighters and battleships, and great dreadnaughts,
Avatars and overlords with gay gilded ports--
Excaliburs, starhawks, corvettes and them all,
As thick as Alexians, from Sitlet to Sol.

But the fleets of the Yor, and the squadrons of men,
And all those crack frigates are hid from our ken,
Midst the wreck of the starbase on which our war turned
Where ships large and small were fragmented and burned

They'll answer no signal--they rest in the void,
With their skeleton crews or honeycombed droids--
And racing right past them, through vacuum and dust,
Comes the Cross-Cosmos freighter, completely unfussed.

Then the poor space-sick passengers, with aching sinuses,
Must submit to scans for nanotech viruses,
While the officers rummage for smuggled cigars
And nobody thinks of those blood-thirsty Yors!

Well done.

Very well done!! Quite close to Kipling too. Going for the Danielle Steel one next?

Downie, you continue to amaze me...

"Do you like Kipling?"
"I don't know. I've never kippled."

It was a bit of a flexible interpretation of the specified subject matter, but as a non-expert I decided to just rip-off a genuine Kipling poem (The French Wars http://www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/kipling/kipling_ind.html Link) and try to squeeze in a mention of a Yor starbase.

I've never read any Danielle Steel at all, so that would be even harder.

Funny stuff for sure. Matthew congrats on the poetry and congrats on Mr. Happy Face. Your talents overwhelm me sometimes.

I am working on game 100 and have the AI on the ropes finaly. Should finish today or tomorrow pending real life stuff.

Tonight we are going to watch an Oliver Stone movie called "Nixon". Not sure if it is a horror movie or what. .

Take care.

Matthew:

Enough of this flippant gaming nonsense!

Was there originally life on Mars?
Will Tony Blair survive until the next election?
Will Man Utd. win the premiership?
Are we likely to see a cure for cancer within twenty years?
Will the Middle East peace process result in successfully developing independent safe homelands for Jews and Palestinians?
Will the English cricket team tour Zimbabwe?

Good morning everyone!
I can see I was the last yesterday and the first today...
Well, I think I have some Galciv hangover... I've been at work for one hour, now, and it sure feels looong... the eyes won't open, and the head hurts...

And so much work that must be finished by the end of the day! I'll try to check the forums from time to time. Hopefully after tomorrow, I'll have a 4 day rest. No work this week end. Just read and play, I mean, insure galactic domination and prosperity

Congrats, Navastnik. And just as you've won your first maso, I'm in the process of losing my first maso for a while.
For a change, I took all military picks. With a shortage of good planets, and two major PQ shifting events while colonising PQ13 worlds, I chose the evil path and lowered my alignment to 30, figuring I could get myself back to good in the long run. Then, while I was finishing off building the Gravity Accelerators, and was too poor to pay any bribes, all the alien races (especially the good ones) declared war on me at once, killing off my trade. Haven't actually lost any planets, but I can't see a way out at the moment.

Was there originally life on Mars?

Who do you think keeps kidnapping all the Mars landers?

Will Tony Blair survive until the next election?

What am I? His doctor?
Probably.

Will Man Utd. win the premiership?

I don't care. (And: No. Arsenal will win.)

Are we likely to see a cure for cancer within twenty years?

We'll see at least five different cures, all with horrible drawbacks.

Will the Middle East peace process result in successfully developing independent safe homelands for Jews and Palestinians?

Probably not in the short term. A settlement is only likely if both sides are more than usually willing to see the other sides' point of view. This does not currently appear to be the case.

Will the English cricket team tour Zimbabwe?

I don't care. But if Australia's security delegation reports that Zimbabwe is unsafe, this will be used as an excuse to cancel.

A version of the Clone Wars in the style of Max Boyce

Doesn't really inspire me, I'm afriad. Nothing much has happened in the Clone Wars as far as I know (apart from RDG-04 shooting off into the lead, of course). And: no 'in the style of' people unless it's possible to find their lyrics on the internet.

fair enough Matthew, but you asked for a challenge not something you could easily look up on the internet.

#798  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 3/3/2004 7:22:08 AM

Duh! I meant a challenge I could do, not one I'd FAIL at!
