And I suppose the half a dozen posts earlier on this page were "just to test that all the smilies were functioning properly".

It's not my fault if my whimsical digressions cause visitors to undergo paroxysms of mirth.

Yeah, whatever! Culture is overrated anyway. Never saw a terror star get stopped by culture.

At the end of the day, the only thing a computer recognises is numbers.

Hmm, gone quiet!

Now either the Fellowship have culturised themselves onto a higher plane, or Sauron's found himself a terror star

Oh, our superior brains allow us to communicate telepathically. We have no need for mere forums.

Aah! Thanks for the explanation, wise one.

Yep, that smiley is working fine!

Nonsense. My father used a palantir forty times a day, and he lived to be 803. And anyway, I can give it up any time I choose.

Does Sauron know this?

#1058  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 3/30/2004 8:56:00 AM

Sauron was found guilty of running a palantir service provider monopoly, so his operation was broken down into several competing companies (or 'armies of darkness' as they prefer to be known).

Hadn't you heard about the Manwe Anti-Trust Act?

the Manwe Anti-Trust Act?

Another excellent example of the kind of obscure reference we have on this page!

I thought that had been overturned based on Melkor vs Valinor...

No, that wasn't the Sauron case. You're thinking of Bill Gates.

I want to get in on the AP Beta action. That means either spending $20 on pre-ordering AP or $35 on Drengin.net. Can anyone talk me into buying Drengin.net? Is there anything in Object Desktop I'd actually use?

If you want to experience some graphics and stuff like that, then is worth, plus you get the chance to download the Political machine when it comes out. So go ahead and get drengin you will not be sorry.

Political Machine looks fun. But it's definitely oriented toward an American audience so you might not want it.

Not me, I went with the $20 choice myself. I knew I would not be using much else that was available.

Good point, I had the wrong Dark Lord

No????????????????? Don't you want to enjoy a fun, clean, election process???? (sarcasm) Clean election (/sarcasm)

Renegade, aren't you from Florida? Or am I confused?

#1069  by Veteran Disciple777 - 3/30/2004 1:18:58 PM

That is why I said that, can you imagine having grown up people looking for some little holes in a piece of carboard, putting the piece of careboard up to the sky, closing one eye and trying to see if the hole went thru or not, that has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life.

Those people were like surgeons in the middle of a heart transplant

The whole electoral process is based on mud sling, calling your oponent names, looking for all those dirty rags, skeletons in the closet, etc, etc. I just heard (open rumor here) that Bush has 11 toes instead of 10 (close rumor here). So that is what a (open sarcasm here) "clean" electoral process is all about (close sarcasm here). Don't you want to experience such a rewarding event????

Drengin.net is only the games, not Object Desktop.

I'm sure there is an upgrade to Drengin for like $20 or soemthing? I know I did it last year and it was $20. Maybe went up.

Political Machine looks ok but I've gotten my money's worth by getting all the latest bug fixes and updates to Gal Civ without having to wait for a monthly build to download. Also get in all the betas.

Plus there is a role playing type game (Elemental?) that they are working on, kind of a Baulder's Gate type thing last I read, that is planned by end of year. If you have Drengin, you'll get it free.

I think anyone can get those. (But thanks for the Object Desktop warning.)

That does sound like a pretty reasonable quantity of games for the extra fifteen dollars. Maybe I'll give it a try.

I went Drengin for Stardock. They are a good company. And I felt they desrved my support. I am not all that interested in the other games. I'll try them out mind you but the real reason was to support Stardock...

Is there anything in Object Desktop I'd actually use?

Depends I've been an OD user since the first. I really like the ability to skin the windoes UI and I use CursorXP all the time. I've tried the other stuff and it's good just not stuff I want to use all the time. The only other thing I have installed always is Object Edit.

I like the idea of the OD Widgets though and will probably try those out.

Again... the support factor come into play as well.

BAH! Sounds like charity to me. When I give charitable donations, I don't give to needy computer games programmers - I am a needy computer games programmer, so I can cut out the middle man by keeping the money. But I'm a kind-hearted soul, so instead I use the money to buy food for homeless shaved kittens, or for some of the many starving orphans I've got locked in my attic.

I was going to post some opinions on the Raven's Claw thread (such as: Real Time Strategy games aren't really 'twitch' games. In many RTS games, you can pause, examine the situation, and then give your troops orders in an organised fashion - the same applies to Baldur's Gate style RPGs.) But by the time I'd finished reading, the topic I was referring to was a hundred posts out of date.

Instead, time for a story. For a change, no alter egos will be used - it improves the reusability. This is a tribute to the unsung heroes of GalCiv - the people who get shoved onto a Combat Transport and sent into battle.
