I will manage to crack the top 25

I thought so too, while i was in the same region you are in now

Congrats, Black Shate
I would have voted, but they said it wouldn't count

I have been trying to crack the Tiny/Maso game. My strategies must suck because I keep getting crushed.

I can beat Tiny/Crippling. Can anyone suggest a course of action for Tiny/MASO?

Sure...

Step#1: Leave current Empire.
Step#2: Join the Jedi Republic
Step#3: The Force will guide you to victory.

Pretty easy huh?

But for real... I know Black Shade, Exar, and Icho, are known to give out some advise. Guys?

I would have voted too but was unconscious . Been celebrating but had to sober up for moderation today

Jesus I just looked at the score table - it used to be me and uncle bernie always neck and neck up to about 250,000 now he is way ahead. Feeling a bit more like playing now, but europa universalis 2 is taking up most of my game time.

But for real... I know Black Shade, Exar, and Icho, are known to give out some advise. Guys?

Get your economy right in the first few years and you'll never lose - you can just hit the turn button for fifteen years like the rest of us

First thing to do is to colonise like crazy, don't go lower than PQ14's though as they are tax negative at the begining and your small cash supply needs to be used for more important things. You need to achieve parity in colony numbers with the strongest AI on maso or at least have a decent chance of conquering the weaker AI's. Set your spend slider to 100% and all to military to crank out colony ships.

Once all planets PQ14+ in range are colonised you need to concentrate on tech big style. At this point put your science to 100% but lower your spend and tax sliders. Tax slider should be low enough to give your colonies 100% morale - this gives loads of bonuses especially population which is what wins the mid-game. Your spend slider should be adjusted so that your income is zero - i.e your spending exactly what you are earning. The spend slider needs constant adjustment as your economy grows. Then get researching economy and trade techs like crazy, go for ones the AI doesn't research like improved environment control, which you can then trade for the AI freighters, plus it will go some way to making up for the AI bonuses.

Constantly trade as much tech with the AI as possible for other techs your not going to research, don;t bother with military the AI demands far too high a price. When possible try to trade for the AI freighters and use them to setup trade routes until you can turn one of your colonies into a trade centre.

After this comes the build phase, build in roughly this order, set all spoending towards buildings - you lose less in rounding errors(I think):

Soil
Hab imp
Bank
Factory thingy
Entertainment network
Fusion reactor
Research lab

Once all of your colonies are up at this level have a stab at building some of the trade goods. From here on your on your own chap. Experiment. You should be ideally placed to try any strategy. Hope this helps.

Also nice to meet you Obi-Wan.

Well, I play both depending on my mood. I like to mix up strategies in Galciv to keep the game intersting.

Well, on Tiny maps I usually only get one more colony which is on par with the AI. So most times I do not even need to build any colony ships.

#2761  by Citizen Exar Kuun - 5/27/2004 2:20:59 PM

Then try and find a PQ12 or 13 to colonise - the extra output can be balanced by quicker trade oppurtunities on smaller maps.

NewfyScotion-

What i do is i make sure that planet setting is on rare (the less planets there are, the easier the game is). Then, i just CTRL+N until i get 2-3 planets. Set your spending to 100%, taxes to 50%, then research 50-60%, military 20-30%, social 20%. Here is my usual research path for the start:
Comm THeory--> Universal Trans---> Med Theory---> Basic Enviro Ctrl---> Nano Electronics---> Nano Frequency Electronics---> Indus theory----> Intersteller Refining. These are all techs the AI tend to avoid, so you can do some nice trading early on to get yourself a tech lead.

If your on tiny, make sure your planets are all in the same sector, then pump out contructors. Build 2 fully upgraded starbases where your planets are, to help boost production (i usually build up to phase III factory, then start next starbase and get that one fully decked out before going back to finish upgrading the first one). Just keep zooming through the tech tree and trading with AIs to keep in good standing with them (the AI usually avoids the green/yellow tech path, along with a good portion of the industrial line, so focus on these and just swap the AI for their military and defensive techs).

Now you can decide how you want to win the game. If your feeling like a alliance victory or something of that nature, just wait tell the year 2190 and then get all the AIs to ally with you (what i do is get them all to friendly a couple of turns before this happens). To do this simply gift them tech (LOTS of tech), or send a decent amount of trade ships their way. If your feeling like going for military victory, once you trade for battleship tech off the AIs, start building combat transports. Build far more than the current pop of the planet can support- just keep them in orbit until they are ready to use. Once you reach dreadnaught tech, then start pumping out offensive ships. You dont necessarily have to build dreads- i usually use simple battle cruisers and then alpha strike all the AIs at the same time. If any planet has a big gun on it- like a battleship- i simply trade the AI for it and use it against their own planet.

Oh, for social improvements i build the following on all my planets (and in this order too):
Soil Enchancement
Habitat Improvement
Entertainment Center
Fusion Plant
Manufactoring Center
Multimedia Center
Anti Matter PP
Transporters (swap in harmony generators here if you dont have teleporters researched yet, but i always try to make sure that i do)
Banking Center
Research Lab
Economic Exchange
Stock Market
Stadium
***** On Tiny or on your main military worlds (other map sizes) build the following as well:
Shipyard
Adv Quality Ctrl
Starship Foundry

For my party pick (yeah, im going backwards, im unorganized like that), i always pick the populists because of the diplomacy bonus, or the party that i had Dream Warrior make me (+50% luck, +20 Diplo, and some other bonus that i forgot). For my point distribution i do: +*50-60% diplomacy, +1 speed, *+25% luck. THe * is for dropping from 60 diplo to 50 to grab the luck bonus, you can drop the luck bonus without any negative side effect and take the full 60% diplo bonus. Anyways.... that should be a basic walk through of a maso game. Just remember to ALWAYs trade with the AI- i check at least once every 2-3 turns to see if they have any new techs, usually every turn in the early goings. Keeping a tech lead or grabbing a tech before the AI has a chance to trade it around is crucial to winning maso games (which is also why you have the diplo picks, to make this easier). On my spending bars, i personally do 20/20/60 (m/s/r), and never change it at all during my games. It seems to be the balance that i find most useful, but its all about your own play style. As to the spending limit and tax rate, i try to keep my taxes so that my aproval rating never drops below 85%, early game it is not terribly important. Once i have a few trade routes set up, i drop the taxes down until i have 100% rating, and eventually it ends up at 0. Initially, losing money doesnt matter. However, you should never drop your funds below 0 credits. Once you get to democracy it is crucial that you keep a positive cash flow, even if it means setting your spending bar down.

Congratulations to Black Shade. I don't believe we've met. It looks like you began about the time I took my leave of absence. You are a great asset to the Republic, I see.I thank all of you for your warm welcomes. I expect to be a more visible member in the near future. I doubt that I will manage to crack the top 25, as I once did. No medals were given for former top 25 back then. Of course, Jedi don't care for such trinkets, but they come in handy when trying to impress young twi'leck maidens who are not easily swayed by force persuasion..., er, not that I..., uh... did I say congrats Black Shade?

yeah, i believe i joined maybe a couple weeks before you took your break. Back when me and beserk were both in the top 25.... man that was a long time ago. Well met

europa universalis 2

I just bought that. I am addicted to EU (playing the IGC) and wanted to get the internet play working. What do you think of EU2? I haven't gotten a chance to install it yet.

Um, Exar...I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan, since, oh...before you were on the Forum.

If you meant Qui-Gon, back in the dark ages (when the Jedi were still just "The Republic" and had about 12 overlords), he was one of the heavy hitters. In fact, he was the first Jedi to beat Maso back when (A.) it was tough because of the lack of published strategies and (B.) few players bothered because there weren't any real points associated with it.

Other useless Jedi trivia dating from prehistory (or at least mid-2003):

Monkson of SF was once Count Dooku. Like Arcilte, Qui-Gon, the little green fella, and myself, he was a Senator in The Republic back before we traded in our Roman short swords for lightsabers. If you have a problem picturing Yoda dressed in armor, muttering in a Russell Crowe voice, "On my signal - unleash hell," you aren't alone.

Aadik Shekar holds the record for longest membership in the Jedi order without a game submission. Due to an early leadership role here in the Forums, he was in the Senate for a time; hence his title of "Jedi Mentor."

The Jedi pushed briefly into first place in the Metaverse on October 26,2003.

Today's useless Jedi trivia - brought to you by SuperVolt lightsaber power cells.

Yes, but it's easier for me because I got my signed poster before they sold out.

Welcome back Master Yoda and Qui-Gon. It has been a long time since we have last spook/seen each other. I'm glad you guys are still around helping the younger Jedi find there way around.

Thanks for the flashback Ben aka Obi-Wan. It seems like such a long time ago when there were only 5 members in the old Republic.

I think it is good that you guys are still posting strategies for everyone to read. This place has always had such helpfull people. I just need to find the time to get some games in. Ben, I am still hooked on UT2004 and Delta Force: Black Hawk down. If anyone plays those, you can add me to your buddy list if you want. The name is Monkson. I could have swore I saw someone names Arcilte join one of the games I was in. Was that you Arcilte?

Well, I've been out of the loop since November or so. If we're going to continue the history lessons, some of the current Knights must step up to the plate. Arcilte, of course, has seen it all; KEmperor and Sherbert have seen most of it. Blackshade has been around for a long time. And between them, Exar and Icho have WRITTEN a lot of the recent history.

The mighty Yoda, of course, has been in and out of the office. Rumors about his extended absences are legion. Secret clone trooper training grounds? FPS games? Drinking binges? A harem on Dagobah?

Thanks for the help Black Shade. I have posted my first MASO win on Tiny/Rare/Tight.

I followed jmgarth's update to the Tiny MASO walkthru in the strategy section.

I also posted my game play info on the Canadian Star Federation thread.

Have fun!

Black Shade would you mind posting your walkthru on the tiny/maso walkthru strategy thread for others to see? It is very helpful.

NewfyScotian, what happened to the Flames last night? I live in South Carolina and am surrounded by Tampa Bay jerseys. It is quite odd. How hard would it be for you to get a Flames jersey?
