It's actually Shrove Tuesday, called Pancake Day, which heralds the beginning of fasting in Lent. On this day (so the historians say) there were feasts of pancakes to use up the supplies of fat, butter and eggs... foods that were forbidden during austere Lent.

The Story of Procyon I
Part 3: Escape from Starcity
I entered the dull gray elevator in which I first arrived. I punched in the code for the docking bay and I was off. The doors closed rather quickly and the car began moving. About a minute into the ride the main alarm went off. Its high pitched alert tones would have woken a sleeping star up. No one on board would miss it.
?Alert! Alert! The station is under attack. All personnel must evacuate immediately. Alert?? Droned an automated voice over the comm.
Then the elevator stopped dead.
?Oh no. What now?? I said getting frustrated.
?All passengers please disembark. Elevators are not to be used in times of emergency. Have a nice day.? Droned a different voice in the car.?
I glanced at the floor number before leaving the car.
?Oh Crap. The docking bay is fifteen more levels down. Now what do I do.?
I looked out the door and realized that I was in Starcity. There was hope yet. Starcity looked just like any normal city back on home planet. Large skyscrapers and other miscellaneous large buildings made up the center of the city and the buildings got progressively smaller as you went further out. Great factories where the majority of the civilian population worked were also scattered throughout. At the furthest reaches of the city were the residential areas where the population lived. It was very much akin to a modern suburb. On any given day the great Starcity would be glistening brilliantly under the brilliant virtual sky. Today wasn?t one of those days.
A sudden urgent feeling to get out of the elevator, and I quickly rushed out. I?ve learned to trust my feelings as it usually kept me alive. I turned around as I zoomed out of the car to see it disappear in a flash behind me.
?Huh? I?ve never seen it move that fast before,?
A few second past and a great crashing sound echoed out of the elevator shaft.
?Oh no!? I said getting worried now. ?The Kraidens must have agents onboard the station. This can?t be good.?
Since I was in the Starcity there was a good chance to escape. The large industrial factories had their own elevators. These large industrial elevators were normally used for bringing materials and finished products back and forth between the factories and the docking bay. It made shipping so much easier when you have a direct link. These elevators definitely wouldn?t be connect at all to the security system for one because personnel usually didn?t ride on the industrial elevators and for the fact that the large corporations had special ?contracts? with base command that kept them that way and out of the maps of the station. That just might mean that the Kraidens had limited if any knowledge of them. That could be an advantage.
I started running through the streets for the nearest factory. I ran block after city block getting progressively closer to the factory. Then I ran into a group of people congregating at a street intersection. They were all moping around like they had all lost hope. Some were crying, there were others who were trying to comfort those who were crying, there were those who were angry with their situation, and there were those who just totally lost it all together. There were about 100 people in all.
?What are you all just standing around for? Why aren?t you going to the nearest exit?? I asked hurriedly.
?The exits are blocked. There?s no way it get in. People have been trampled flat trying to get out.? Said a man stepping forward.
?Besides we?re all going to die any way. Them Kraidens will kill us all. There?s no use trying to hold on to false hope.? Said a sullen woman in back of the man.
?Everybody follow me!? I yelled at the top of my lungs. ?I know a way out of here. I?m the captain of a cruiser bound for home planet. I advise you all come with me. Now whose coming.?
The entire group agreed at once.
?Now let?s go.?
We all stayed together. I was determined not to leave anyone behind. I decided it was best not to tell everyone that the Kraidens were aboard. They were masters of disguise and could have been any one. I didn?t want to cause a great panic. I could only hope that my standard issue blaster would be enough to defend us all.
We were about 50 yards from the factory when a squad of Kraidens busted through the nearest wall towards us.
?EVERYBODY GET TO THE FACTORY!!!? I screamed.
The Kraidens were as evil looking as they actually were. They had flat triangular heads with two small black beady eyes. They had large slim bodies and two large tentacles for arms and hat a pair of powerful legs. They were excellent and highly trained warriors, and excellent at hand to hand combat. One of them came up behind one of the people. It grabbed him by the neck and threw him about 50 feet. Another Grabbed two people ant once and slammed them together at once. They snickered and laughed as if they were enjoying it. It was enough to make me burst.
I turned around and took out all my anger on the nearest Kraiden as it worked its way massacring the people. I screamed fired my blaster again and again. When I came to my senses I saw that it had gone down and I had taken the other down as well. The third was nowhere in sight but I couldn?t count it as dead yet. I saw that everybody left had reached the factory. I proceeded inside to get them out of there.
?Everybody into the freight elevator, Now!? I directed.
Immediately there was a rush of questions directed at me.
?There is no time to answer your questions now. We have to get out of here!?
I began to herd them into the elevator. It may have been big but only about 40 people could fit inside. I punched in the buttons and of they went to safety. All the others were quiet. There were only 30 left to go. They got so many, I thought but some had probably just run in fear. I thought I could hear footsteps in the dark dismal factory I started to get really worried but I shook it off. After two minutes the elevator came back. That is when the remaining Kraiden decided to make his appearance.
?Go without me. I?ll catch up.? I yelled as I punched in the buttons and jumped behind the nearest peace of machinery.
?You?ll never escape form here alive.? Said a dark menacing voice.
I took a few shots off at him and ducked back down. This one was twice as big as the others, and all my shots just bounces off his armor.
?Oh? What do I do now??
?Ah ha! There you are.? Said the Kraiden as he destroyed the machinery around me and knocked my weapon out of the way.
I quickly did a summersault under his legs and did a jump behind some more machinery.
?Just come out.? He said getting frustrated. ?What?s the use of prolonging the inevitable.?
Then I saw it my one chance to escape, but I would only have one chance at it. I reached out to my weapon. I felt a familiar energy some ?force? flow through me and my weapon came right back to my hand.
?What!?
Good he was distracted. I set my blaster to overload and through it at the tanks behind the Kraiden. Then I ran out of my hiding place hit the buttons for the docking bay and jumped into the elevator.
?Bye-bye.? I said slyly.
The Kraiden turned around and let a loud screech. He started to bound toward me, but it was two late. The small weapon exploded and set of a chain reaction in the tanks behind it. A large explosion resulted. Nothing could have survived that, I thought. It then got severely hot in the car but I was safe for the elevator was fully in the shaft.
I reached the bottom to see that everybody in the hall was all right. A wave of relief washed over me. But I knew that we weren?t out of the water yet. I looked out the door to see that the coast was clear, and the SS ArcAngel was still there in all its glory. I bounded out the door with all the people and we made our way to the ship. Everybody was running on the onramp quickly. Then out of the hallway in a burst of anger came the Kraiden.
?What!!!? I screamed in surprise.
I saw that everyone was on so I entered and closed the ramp. I went directly to the bridge.
?Commander on deck.? Cried a man on deck
?Shut up! Drop the guns take out that Kraiden NOW?
A view screen lit up and showed one of the ships turrets knocking the Kraiden down.
?Good. Engines to full. Take us out of here?
?But, Sir the exit to the docking bay was destroyed.?
?Then make a new one ?
?What!?
?You heard what I said. Power up the main cannon.?
The sound of the powering sequence could be heard, even from the protection of the bridge.
?FIRE?
The forward cannon fired releasing a large beam of green light. It blew a gaping hole in the hull.
?NOW GET US OUT OF HERE!!!?
The ships engines lit up and it, its crew, and the rescued civilians took off full speed out of the station.
