We interrupt your regularly secduled program to bring you...

The Story of Procyon I: Part 4 The Battle For Starbase 138

We blasted out of the hole we made in the side of the docking bay and into the battle that was going on all around us. It seemed as if we leapt out of the frying pan and into the proverbial fire. The battle raged all around us. The dead hulls of several other cruisers that had been launched floated around us. Fighters were zinging everywhere and were engaging the enemy at will. They were severely outclassed on all counts. The only advantage they had was that they outnumbered them at least three to one but those odds were slowly diminishing. The defensive fleet had at least three cruisers and a destroyer left along with several fighter squadrons. The enemy fleet only had a lone cruiser that was decimating everything in its path and at least three fighter squadrons that were tearing through our lines with deadly efficiency. The station was still fairly intact so far. Fires had broken out on some decks of the military floors but seemed contained. The turrets most of which were offline were firing randomly into space. The targeting computer was obviously offline

"Permission to join the battle sir?" Asked the man who addressed me before.

"Not on your life. This battle is one that can't be won. None of us have ever survived a battle with an enemy cruiser before." I stated.

"But sir?"

"No buts. "

I took control of the comm. We had to retreat there was no way the others could defeat them here. They hadn't the coordination or the skills for that. Besides we needed all available ships to defend the home planed. Hopefully there the high command would have come up with a way to defeat this seemingly unstoppable force. The sole destroyer then lost control smashing into a close by cruiser and they were both lost in the explosion.

"This is M.B.M of the SS ArcAngel to all remaining fleet craft. We need to retreat from here. The battle is lost. If any one wishes to live, retreat away from the enemy cruiser. All remaining fighters keep the enemy cruiser's guns off any retreating ships.

I ended the communication.

"Bring us about and make full speed toward the enemy fleet ship."

"Sir but you?"

"NO buts. I know what I'm doing. Ready the antimatter mines"

"Sir," said the weapons officer, "those haven't been properly tested yet, and besides they won't do much to their shields."

"I know that. Just ready them for deployment"

"Yes sir." He grumbled

We were moving closer and closer to the enemy cruiser and gaining speed by the second.

"The mines are ready for deployment sir."

"Good, now power up the main cannon"

The now familiar sound of the cannon rang on the bridge once more.

"Fire captain?"

"No. Not yet."

"Sir if we don't fire soon the cannon will overload and explode."

We were close now but not close enough.

"30 seconds to cannon overload"

"Just a little longer"

"5"

"4"

"3"

"2"

"1"

"FIRE NOW"

The over charged beam fired off all its energy directly onto the enemy's shields making a gaping hole in them.

"Now pull up and deploy the mines"

We pulled up above the enemy and released the mines from the underbelly of our ship. The last one fell through the hole in the shields just as they finished regenerating. They attached to the hull in a hundred different places.

"Detonate sir?"

"Please do"

The mines all detonated at once blowing the once mighty ship into nothing. It was completely vaporized. Just then I realized something. The enemy fighters were still out there.

"Show me a picture of the station"

The screen flashed on just in time to see the great dome over Starcity collapse in upon itself crushing everything under it.

"Oh no"

How could I have been so naïve! I was so obsessed with saving the retreating ships that I forgot about all of those innocent people back in the station.

"Sir the fighter squadrons are retreating."

"Bring us about. We need to search for survivors"

"Sir I don't think that is such a good idea." Said the tactical officer getting more than a little worried.

"And why not?"

"Sir. If my scans are correct there is a neutrino bomb planted in the station. If we don't go SOON us and everything else in the sector will be destroyed"

"Then get us out of here" I said with dismay.

We moved ourselves out of the sector as fast as we could.

"Put the station back on screen"

The screen flared up again and showed what was left of the once great station. Who knows how many people had died this day. I didn't want to think about it. Jus then there was a great blue flash and the station was gone.

"Screen off,' I said in a state of despair.

"Is there anything on sensors?"

"No. Nothing at all. Not even space dust."

"Set a course for Procyon I. I'm taking to my quarters. I'll have NO intrusions."

I guess I was right this was a battle that couldn't be won.

Meanwhile in the halls of the Jedi Temple a small shadowed figure meets with several of the high counsel.

"I have felt a disturbance in the Force. Something grave is going to happen I fear."

"I have felt it too master. What is going to happen" said one of the two other taller shadowed figures.

"Clouded the future is, but fear what is coming I do. Head to the coordinates on this disk you should." The small figure handed the disk one of the taller figures. "Do all that you can to help."

"Yes master," the two said together. They gave a bow and turned out of the temple and two their respective ships.

Enjoy everybody
