Just to add a few comments:

1. I don't think there is a connection between our recent retirements and the recruiting issue. The truth is that as a small outfit, we really played hard getting to the top of the tree. As others might discover, once you're there you then ask yourself: "What else is there?" Most of us are Metaverse veterans and have been playing a LOOOONG time. Special Forces is really sitting down privately and trying to decide where we go with this.

2. It seems to me recruiters are not adding the 'tag line' that was agreed to when responding to newbies. I dont know if it's a combination of having an Empires forum hived off AND restricting recruitment spam, but people at least should add their tag line so we get an idea of whether that works or not. Some empires (eg Guardians, which are the most active at present) still seem to be recruiting regularly.

3. I sensed the slowdown some time ago - which is why I put so much energy into getting this tournament up and running. I was hoping it would stimulate play; which it has done, but not for my empire! A pity my own people start retiring half way through - sorry to our allies! Again, I don't think the two are connected - for some of us in Special Forces, the time has just come.

Hey, Wombie...glad to hear you guys are plotting your next move! Hopefully you guys will get a resurgence of interest like I did. I've never enjoyed the game or the Metaverse as much as I am now!

Well, I'm recruiting a little bit...using the tag line at the bottom of posts. However, all the empires need to do this to increase interest in Empires in general. If newbies sense there's interesting things going on in empires, they'll look into all of them! Let's show a little empire pride, people!

Well you're all welcome to come back home to G.R.O.S.S. if you get too lonely over here. And here I thought I was going to kick back, do nothing, and bask in everyone else's glory in this alliance....

Again you can rejoin us if you want.

I don't think it's the recruiting thing either. I faced the same question when I and G.R.O.S.S. was on top for so long. But at that time the scoring system was vastly different with a variety of ways to score big. Now there is only one. Spending too much time in the crankomasoverse gets tedius. Hence I limit my play time.

I have posted up a detailed tally of *all* of the scores from the Clone War, sorted by Empire and Empire member, for all five alliances. See who you are competing against!

Go to http://diplomats.galciv.org/forum/ Link and go to the forum entitled "Public Square": "Audience Chamber" and look for the thread entitled "Detailed Score Tally from the Clone War by Empire and Member". If you don't already have an account on this board, then feel free to create an account and password and get immediate access to the "Audience Chamber"!

...for some of us in Special Forces, the time has just come.

The samurai, weary from his travels, passes a familiar tavern and steps in. Though his long and arduous trek across the endless reaches of Real Life continues, he still has time to down a brew or three with his comrades.

Stepping into the tavern, he is surprised to see that it stands empty. But perhaps not surprised after all; the ennui of a long struggle and the demands of Life were taking their toll on the others, even before he left. But, even for those that tired of constant battles, there was always the communal hubbub of the tavern. Now, a fine sheen of dust covers the floor; the first strands of cobwebs hang lazily from the polished bar.

On the wall behind the bar, the holograms stare back at him. Images of legends past, the Precursors who helped him find a balance, far in the past. The great Staffa, the noble Ray. Then, those of the next great wave; those he called teammates. Cotal/FT. Jaws. Cypher.

Now, even the patter of tiny claws from Wombat's countless offspring are barely heard. With no mountains left to climb, the mighty troopers fade into retirement and the mists of time. Quack, off in the Retox, seeking personal glory or a good stiff drink. Monkson, a longtime comrade from his earliest days in the Meta. Harel the assassin. Killa, Raj, Furious. The mighty Hurls, his tutor in the art of diplomacy. Even Piers, the bartender. All ominously silent and absent. A few bravely wave the banner high, even now; the mighty Wombat, the steady Blacksmoke. But they, too, are silent in this place, once the most vibrant watering hole in the galaxy.

The samurai is content. He has nothing left to prove. He has gained the richness of months of combat and comradeship. He holds respect for valued friends and allies - Theo, Yoda, Arcilte...and respect for his longtime adversaries as well - Kit, Downie. Maybe even Sirian.

But these once-raucous chambers are too still, too sepulcheral. Better to remember the times when a small band of troopers carved their name in flame across the Meta. When he played a part, however small, in the founding of an Empire, in the establishment of a legend.

He pauses for a toast to honor his comrades-in-arms. He will maintain contact with them, in other places, perhaps. But this moment, this place, will always be remembered.

Then, wearily, he turns towards the door. There is a long journey ahead.

Okay, guys...that's enough retirements!!!!

Seriously, Ben...it really is hard to see you guys leaving. If the call of other adventures is beckoning you, there's no stopping you. I wish you well and hope you stop in and visit us sometime.

Now, for the rest of you SpecFor mugs...there's still a lot of excitement to be had around here! We are really close to the official release of Altarian Prophecy, and with it will come a new Metaverse. New players, new challenges, new empires. You'll even see a change in the Metaverse itself, with new categories for scenarios and campaigns. Things are on the verge of a complete revitalization! I hope you will hang on a little longer and experience the difference with the rest of us!

I think that the only way to revive this empire is to allow anyone who wants to join to be able to do so, the invitation only status is good when everyone participates but is a negative factor when 4 or 5 of the members just plain quit.

Seriously, as one who plays far less and for whom much of the interest is gone bboth in the game and the metaverse this wouldn't address the real issue for me.

Also, of all the poeple who have asked to join we have said no to very, very few.

I've updated the detailed tally of *all* of the scores from the Clone War, sorted by Empire and Empire member, for all five alliances. This tally shows that there are even some new players joining since yesterday. From now on, no further announcements will be made when this tally is updated. However, the intention is to do an update once a day, in the late afternoon or evening.

Hmmm. I would have to disagree with you. I was interested in SF before I became a Guardian. The Invite Only seemed a little elitist, so I looked elsewhere. You guys should really reconsider that.

You'd have to know the history to understand where that came from; SF was formed at a time when there was a LOT of empire hopping going on. The invite-only status was really in part a reaction to happenings in the Metaverse at that time - we wanted a stable crew and invite-only seemed the way to achieve that. It's worked well for other empires: Realms Beyond, Gammasquad and others - it's not as if we're the only ones, although I notice we get the 'elitist' tag more often than most. We have a simple system - if someone wants in, all they have to do is make contact and introduce themselves.

It's plain that we're going through a real soul searching here, as many of us are long timers (I first submitted in May 2003). We're just sorting through our options.

#718  by Citizen Lothmorg the Black - 3/10/2004 5:11:23 PM

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you are elitist, just that that's the impression I first received. I first started playing shortly after you - about June '03, so I know what it was like back then.

I thought I'd just let you know how someone looking around might feel. The SF were not around when I took my vacation from GC.

You are very welcome to disagree, however, I repeat, the amount of empire participation/games submissions etc isn't my, personal, real issue. That is more around other matters.

#722  by Citizen Lothmorg the Black - 3/10/2004 8:06:55 PM

Ah, yes. I did not mean your personal issues, just that of your empire. Sorry if I offended you.

Am I to infer from this, the Suave one is retiring too? I hope not. But if so, good luck, thanks for the fun we all had, and don't be a stranger.

No worries, I am just touchy about this and bruised from some other metaverse denizens.

the Suave one is retiring too

Hmm, the Sauve one has never been described as retiring!!

What dio I expect I will do? Basically my submissions will be far less frequent, theere has even been a big gap since the last.
Many causes, factors, including some aspects of the game, some aspects of the metaverse, large aspects of real life, vacation next month, commencing a Ph D, etc etc.

Thanks for the comments & support, and no I won't be a stranger, just less frequent.
