Empire Recruiting in the Galactic Forum

In a bold move the Diplomats and the Jedi have the following proposition for you.

Following recent complaints about over-recruiting in the Galactic Forum and the creation of this forum, it was proposed that we put our recruiting posts in one thread in the GF. This thread would then be'stickied' to the top section. no further recruiting threads would then be posted. We are not saying dont pitch your empire to someone after you help them, just no more threads.

So far both the diplomats and the jedi have signed up for this. If you agree to this proposal please just answer yes in a post below. This idea will need the backing of all the main empires if it is to succeed.

Thanks

It's pretty obvious Stardock wants us to tone it down over there, or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble to set up this Forum.

I'd recommend a stickied, CLOSED thread over there, with one post explaining what empires are and directing people over here if they're interested. If it's an open thread and shared to boot, it's going to be 3000 posts long...not much help for newbies.

unfortunately these forums do not support closed threads

That is why the one thread idea, with each empire posting once. best we can do given the situation. we will never get a 'no recruiting' policy, so having one thread and one post is the only option

You may want to check on that. Unless they've changed it, I seem to recall a thread that got totally out of hand way back in the dark ages. I think Frogboy shut down the postings while leaving the thread itself still in place. For totally different reasons, that would be ideal here.

If the thread is allowed to get longer, all we'd need would be one empire to post twice, and we'd have a runaway thread on our hands. Again, not much help for players interested in joining up.

ill check with Cari. unfortunaltley if all the empires dont agree it would be a pointless excercise

Well, I tried to test my memory digging through 9-month-old threads...couldn't find the one in question, but I DID stumble across this link on a totally unrelated topic.

Believe it or not, they're still updating the stats on GalCiv chat - this page deserves to be resurrected!

So that's where EBZ is these days...

I'd recommend a stickied, CLOSED Ben.

Would a closed thread work? What happens if an empire changes it name? What happens if they change their theme? What happens if they change their homepage? Is this a thread or is this a list that someone has to constantly manage? Yes, an open thread will eventually become quite cumbersome, but life's tough when you're a newbie. I don't believe a closed thread would actually help.

The jedi council supports this idea as long as we can get all the main empires on board which is basically everyone in the top ten to fifteen empires. I have had a semi-yes from pontius in the GROSS empire as well now.

There is a prob though, we don't want to loose threadzilla over on the main forum, there is alot of cool stuff on there, I believe quite a few empires will feel the same. The solution to this is to transfer them here, which I believe Cari has already said is a no . She may change her mind however if we approach her as a group of empires

FOOL!!! That's exactly the trap She's set for us!!! If we mass ourselves into one large gaggle, She will smite us all with Her Divine E-Power in one mighty strike!!! Run away! Run away!

Or even more likely what if there is a NEW EMPIRE all together?

OK to make this work the empires we need on board are the SF, FoTR, the Euro's, MWC, Jedi's, RB, Canadians, Anzacs, Gross, Evil Empire and the diplomats.

So far we have the Anzacs, the Diplomats, GROSS, RB(I think) and the Jedi's on board.

Specifically to expand on what spellforce has said:

We will have a stickied recruitment thread - one post per empire and thats it to keep it to a manageable size so make it a good pitch.

To move our old threads over here with the CariElf's agreement - we're not taking this to CariElf until we have all empires on board

No more random recruiting in other peoples threads

This is due to ALOT of complaints about random recruiting - I admit I can be one of the worst

This is my two cents.

Fine idea if random recruiting a major issue.

Frankly, I think you should keep your recruiting to your empire threads. If people aren't checking the empires they aren't interested and you should leave them alone.

I have never posted an empire related post in any thread but my own. I hate telemarkers, people who come to my door, and spam. I don't like having to read anything that doesn't concern me, especially when it's in threads that it has no business in!

Some of the emperors out there have been downright terrible about this! It's just downright rude to post recruitment messages in threads that are completely irrelevent.

That's my opinion.

Umm, think y'all are missing my point. Just have a one-post stickied thread from somebody (Spellforce? Cari?) explaining what empires are, and directing them here to see who's active. That thread wouldn't need to mention specific empires at all. We all obviously have our own threads over here; people will be able to see which empires are current based on the threads, just like the good ol' days.

I'd recommend a stickied, CLOSED Ben.

Starting to think others would agree with you. Dream on!

Think of me as your evil twin, Kit; sanity to balance your insanity, temperance to balance your drunken revelries, good to match your evil. I am merely a reflection of your deepest fears; that deep down, you're merely a nice guy that likes the occasional shot of Jack.

Or was that a Star Trek episode?

I guess I approve in principle with what is being suggested, but since it relies completely on the honour system (and what would be the punishment for breaking the 'rule'?) it's just as likely to breakdown as any other suggestion. We need to analyse the purpose of our actions here:

1. To EXPLAIN to new players the rationale of 'empiring' and what all these funny names are about.

2. To encourage the new player to consider learning more about an empire as a prelude to joining one, and how to go about that.

3. As individual empires, to run a recruitment pitch of some sort.

4. Finally, to essentially STAY OUT of the regular forum for all other empire-related purposes (which is what I presume Stardock intended by setting up this section).

I can still see posts being added to the old empire threads in the regular forum. I understand that there is a great deal of history there (which I have been no small part of) and I understand the desire to preserve it. Unfortunately, that does not appear possible. So be it: let it go. Cherish Threadzilla and all the rest, drink a toast to old friends passed away...and go and create a NEW history for your empire.

Regarding empires that are deceased: let Spellforce (or whoever has the ability) to simply edit the thread and remove their recruitment pitch. That stickied thread doesn't need to be closed (in order to allow new empires to add to it) but it needs to be VICIOUSLY policed to prevent abuse.

I would be happy to write a detailed covering description of empires, their rationale, how to approach, etc. that might be used as the first post in such a stickied thread (subject to consensus approval, of course), followed by ONE RECRUITMENT POST for each interested empire.

I would expect that participation in this system implies that the old empire threads are left to wither and pass away - it's the only way to clear the standard forum of empire traffic.

Realms Beyond doesn't do active recruiting. As some of you may recall, we didn't even have a thread at Stardock for several weeks. You may not know, we weren't even planning one, until the Metaverse Review called on us to conform and open a thread, so that we could have "normal" relations with other empires -- a place to chitchat and exchange banter. Fine, we did, and that has been fun, so no regrets.

However, we are not part of the problem here. Seeing as how the kind of sales pitch being proposed isn't our style, we needn't be part of this solution, either. If this is what other empires want to do, we won't stand in the way. However, we are content with our one little thread, which now is located in the Empires forum, where it belongs.

I'd appreciate at least the top empires and/or most active empires having ONE thread stickied in the Empires forum, to be sure to avoid bump wars in case some folks get happy with starting lots of new threads that could push an empire's main thread off the front page if it should sit idle for (god forbid) a couple of days. Other than that, we at RB are content with the new Empire forum and will not be doing any recruiting in the general forum.

I believe that separating Empire business into its own forum is best for the community. There hasn't BEEN much of a general forum anyway. There's a been an empire forum all along, with bug reports and Stardock business stickied at the top, and bump wars pushing everything else off the front page in less than a day.

RB will conduct empire business in the empire forum. If others behave differently, that's not our concern. We trust players to figure out their preferences on empire participation, to look into the options and make their own choices, and we respect those choices, whether or not they choose us.

Don't forget that evil lookin' teddy bear. We'll have Pontius stop by to tuck you in and give you a nice glass of warm milk with a shot of bourbon.

Thank you Uncle... Ben... hang on a minute! Well... I think I'll just let that revelation go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can we go back to a point Ben made in his first post? I also think the solitary stickied recruiting thread (SSRT) should start with a neutral post from Cari directing players to the Empires forum.
Now after that, I disagree with folks here. I think it should remain open. Ya see, once Cari starts with a pointer, it doesn't matter what junk follows.
Hmmm...yes, it does. I think what people are asking for is a way to encourage new players to participate in empiring with details and offers, not just a "go here" notice. Also, they're asking for that not to continue to be polluted with rubbish, so the newbie has a concise "guide to empiring" they can use to start their travels in the Metaverse. Just my 2bc
Um, I said that I can't move threads, not that I wouldn't.  There's no way to do it.  You're going to have to start new threads here and let the ones on the Galactic Forum die.
Also, the intent behind creating this forum was not to drive you off the other forums completely, but to give you a home for your threads.
So are you settled on whether you want a single sticky recruitment thread on the main forum, or if you want a "go here" thread with a general description of what empires are, etc?
#24  by Citizen Wild Wombat - 2/2/2004 4:41:48 PM
Exar: yes I am "for real" and I will begin working on it; I should have in within 24 hours. I'll post it here for empire players to see if they are happy with it first.
CariElf: Er...I don't think anyone felt the intent was malicious! Most of us have seen non-empire players complain that empire talk chokes the main forum, so I guess we presume setting up a dedicated empires forum implies that we should take our business here, so to speak (and thus keep it off the main forum) which is an experiment I am happy to try.
I think the answer to your question is: both Exar's original proposal was a stickied thread in the main forum. I would vote for that, and for it to start with a substantial introduction to empiring that would educate the newbie (including a 'go here' note), followed by one post from each active empire that wished to recruit. That could simply remain in place on the main forum for newbies to access.
