It's the same few hardcore spam-everything-to-!@#$! folks doing this over and over and over.

That's not personal in the context of the whole thread?

I believe it is and do the other posters who found it personally offemsive.

Ah! You have seen our little RB spam secret! What you do not know is the history behind this "advertising". There was a time where such "advertising" was not a part of Sirian's posting--but he can tell the story better than I. Suffice to say that he (we) migrated to standards of the community--and deemed that the signatures form of advertising was not specifically offensive.

One of these days, I might actually get a Realms Beyond member to concede a point! The 'history' is irrelevant - the point is you 'spam' on another board in keeping with the conduct of that community. Now you can try migrating to the standard of this community , which appears no different to most others.

I still have to agree with Sirian that the last line of answering a question of a newcomer (or non-affiliated player) with a "if you are looking to join an empire.." moniker is unsolicited advertising

I think this is the finest of hair splitting, compared to putting material in a sig. The difference is about two presses on the 'Enter' key. I realise you're not disagreeing with me, Bam-Bam, I just think we're getting to a stage in the debate that's not worth having, that's all.

Wow! This thread made me blink. I leave you with a defination:

play

v. intr.
1. To occupy oneself in amusement, sport, or other recreation: children playing with toys.

2. To take part in a game:
a. No minors are eligible to play.
b. To participate in betting; gamble.

3. To act in jest or sport: They're not arguing in earnest, they're just playing.

4. To deal or behave carelessly or indifferently; toy. See Synonyms at flirt.

5. To behave or converse sportively or playfully.

6. To act or conduct oneself in a specified way: play fair; an investor who plays cautiously.

7. To act, especially in a dramatic production.

8. Music.
a. To perform on an instrument: play on an accordion.
b. To emit sound or be sounded in performance: The band is playing.

9. To be performed, as in a theater or on television: A good movie is playing tonight.

10. To be received or accepted: a speech that played poorly with the voters.

11. To move or seem to move quickly, lightly, or irregularly: The breeze played on the water.

12. To function or discharge uninterruptedly: The fountains played in the courtyard.

13. To move or operate freely within a bounded space, as machine parts do.

Well it apears that we agree to disagree...

this isn't getting us anywhere..

I for one will now go back to posting whatever, whereever I feel like it.. untill others refrain from doing so... I proved my point about empire hoping (much to my own detriment) when ppl were doing it.. by leaving one of the main empiers effected( of which i was the emperor at the time) since then there hs not been anywhere as much of it happening.. at least nothing has been said about the recent player movements..

I guess i'll just have to prove my point yet again.. (and again cop all the flack and harasment) until ppl see that we do need these rules..

Its like talking in a general programers forum when a site has forums setup to handle different things... and you cross your posts on a topic that should be in another forum..

Whats the sence in having all these different forums if you can simply post anything you want where ever you want..

Its a waste of resources.. because ppl won't go into the other forums unless they have to , they'll simply stay in the general forum..

Sorry to rant so nmuch.. but I can see that it takes extreme measures to get my point accross..
I shall do all of this without starting any new threads about my empire.. i'll simply continue with the old ones that i've let sleep.. unlike other empires in the general forum..

(and no iu'n not a law breaker) you've neverseen me advertise my empire in any of the other forums..

I'm not sure about the logic behind this statement. Perhaps you like the attention, J.T.

untill others refrain from doing so...

Reality check - people are refraining from recruitment threads in the Galactic Forum. People are easing off the recruitment battles within Galactic Forum posts. If you want more rules, state them clearly and explain why we should incorporate them. Taking extreme action to prove your point really doesn’t help.

(edit: to add the following)

Reading over your post J.T., I'm really not sure what it is that you're upset about. Who is violating the guidelines that we're coming up with? What is your understanding of the guidelines that we've been discussing?

J.T.: hang on a sec! I don't think we're miles apart. Like you, I thought that 'zero tolerance' was the go...but the majority seem to favour allowing a one line closer to a helpful post, like ending a post with a sig. Using sigs on other boards (as you would know) isn't considered cross-posting. I reckon allow people to use a sig in their ordinary posting, and see how it goes before going in with the heavy weapons?

Whats the sence in having all these different forums if you can simply post anything you want where ever you want..

Couldn't agree more...people should stick to the purpose of the forum, and I'm certainly happy to do that too. I would hope people could attach a short sig without the situation getting out of hand.

WOW, lol ok,
bitoftruehonesty
The serious way we take all these "metaverse wide" issues and debates amuses me, and frankly I think if we didn't bicker and argue over something every month this forum would get really boring! I think its this that keeps me so interested in Empireing Politics anyone?

And here I sit with a fat book in front of me titled "International Law and Organization". This book is for one of the political science classes I have.

I'm going to go ahead and stick my neck out just a tad regarding J.T.'s post. I think he's referring to empire communication threads in the Galactic Forum.

#108  by Citizen Wild Wombat - 2/9/2004 7:50:30 PM

Yoda's post from the thread in the Galactic Forum

"I respect your opinion on the issue of recruiting younglings, but thats what it is, your opinion. Not the law, or way things have to be. You are entitled to your opinion and may continue to practice your own way of recruitment, but I deserve the same respect from you for my opinion and the way of my Empire. Your post came across as a reprimand to other Empire's way of surviving and thriving in the Metaverse while trying to help others at the same time.

In conclusion, and for the sake of a fun, imaginative metaverse, the Jedi Republic now considers itself to be in neutral relations with the Realms Beyond"

The serious way we take all these "metaverse wide" issues and debates amuses me

Er...this is you being amused, Yoda? No one needs to feel aggrieved; we're just having a discussion that in some ways we need to have, to promote an enjoyable environment. The truth is, you care about this as much as the rest of us - the Empires have brought some fun to all of us, which is why we continue to come here and sort things out.

So don't pretend distain - or it'll be a touch of the Iron Paw for you, muppet!

#109  by Citizen KitWarrior - 2/9/2004 8:05:31 PM

Hey Wombie, I don't think it was Yoda's intent to show disdain. (I really should let him speak for himself... anyhow...) I think he was just commenting on how interested we all are in this topic, which does not exclude his own interest. Depends on what angle you take as you read his comments.

And is it me or has a whole lot of Iron Paw been going around? Hey! Whoa! Watch that thing, Wombie! Are you intentionally taking... ...taking swipes at me?

Ya know... I really think I need to take a break. Everyone, please don't kill each other over the next few days.

I made a personal observation today that I hope is insightful for this "discussion" we are enjoying right now. I consider myself to still be fairly new around here (only a month and a half since I appeared in the Metaverse). My first experience with the main forum consisted of avoiding huge threads of more than 1000 posts that I could never get through and still play this game I had bought. Whenever I went to the main forum I would deliberately skip all the empire threads as being "too much too late". Now, I am able to read every thread in the main forum and even give my own version of help and advice. I like the change.

I don't mind the recruitment posts (though I agree that one line is plenty). The very first time I posted (due to submission problems--imagine that ), Lord Megatron, Seeker Master, (Someone from G.R.O.S.S, sorry don't remember who), Arcilte, and a few others posted with help--followed with a plug for the Empire of Light (R.I.P.), G.R.O.S.S., and the Jedi Republic. Personally, I expected and welcomed it--it felt like I was being welcomed and accepted into the community. I still feel that way.

I hope this adds a "different" perspective to the thread. If not, ignore me--what do I know anyway!!

now suddenly because couple of people don't like it, we have to change something that 99% of the players are fine with

Mayito it was more than a couple of players as responses to this thread and others show. I think you and I were probably two of the most enthusiastic recruiters out there.

when some folks cannot show a modicum of self-restraint.

BamBam a contribution from RB is welcome , phrases like this however are not. They do nothing to advance the discussion but may upset people

Guys as JTQ says we are now going over the same issue over and over again. We must start to move the discussion forwards. May I suggest the following areas:

i) Have the new guidelines had an effect on traffic volume/type in the forum?

ii) Is the metaverse still as much fun? If not are the potential benefits worth it? Do we/Can we go further? What kind of a metaverse do we want?

iii) Should rcruitment be out of bounds in the strategy and mod forums?

*sigh*...it was a joke, Kit...

...but maybe you DO need a touch of the Paw to send you on your way! Come to think of it...this stuff has only broken out since you came back into the Metaverse ...with your International Law...hmmm....

(oh...and that was a joke too )

Ok.. I'm no longer going to rebel to get my point accross but i'm going to try to help encourage others to do the right thing.. in true StarFleet fashon.. via being diplomatic about it.. please read the closing msg in http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=122245 Link thread..

I hope this doesn't frighten others out of (or deter them from joining) StarFleet

Answering questions followed by a recruitment slogan is undecided upon

I think that maybe the sales pitch could be contained in a signature. That way, every post could be a salespitch, but you could feel safe reading all the way to end of the post.

Which is similar to what we have already done - one line at the end of a post for each empire - we can't have signatures on this forum and they would actually take up more space than our current proposals.

BTW - this is excellent stuff. I am glad that everyone here is giving this subject such focus. I was the originator of one of those "other" threads, and I must say that if my thread was even partially responsible for the creation of this thread, then I am glad that I started it.

Thank you for the ongoing discussion.

#121  by Veteran Gerakken - 2/10/2004 4:36:48 AM

Whew! Poor Gerakken has just caught up with this current third rail of the Galciv board just now. I am still a little behind the times on some things, so this is more likely to be jumbled thoughts based upon my feel of the situation that was before I left and what it is now.

Recruitment is the third rail in the fact that the game is losing its appeal to the mass market and new recruits seem harder to find, therefore more empires are (were?) in increasing competition to recruit fresh blood. It does not necessarily have to be the third rail in the fact that we have always been a close knit community. At least that is how I remembered it before my leave and how I have come to see it again after my return. Am I to think that the balance of imperial power is so tense around here that one overzealous overlord (or a clueless newbie even) can start an arms race just by breaking some sort of moderate honor system?

Zero tolerance is not the answer, in my opinion. One recruiting post on page one of the GF and empire forum is fine by me, and any off-topic pitches should contain something that pertains to the thread at hand first. Signatures containing imperial references are a grey area. I realize sig files seem to be fair game in other places. My personal opinion, though, is that constant pitches in a sig is unbefitting our community. The whole thing to me is that we are a community first and empiring comes second. If it is obviously a recruitment thread, then such a sig is quite alright, but to hit everyone over the head with the sig ad over and over again in every post everywhere is a bit of overkill.

Those are just my scattered thoughts at the moment. I have no Metaverse Peace Plan in my pocket. I am just a Spymaster, looking in on empires throughout the Meta. While I do have a great affection for my empire, I have greater affection to the community here as a whole and would like to see some common sense prevail where zero tolerance is not the rule and one post in poor judgement cannot start a spiral of bitterness.

#122  by Citizen Wild Wombat - 2/10/2004 5:28:06 AM

Um, Gerakken...take a pill. I sense no "spiral of bitterness" here, and I don't think any Peace Plan is needed either. Why are people worried about having a robust discussion? Why should people be scared of disagreeing with each other? During the course of the discussion, it seems to me we are moving slowly towards a clarified position. The state of play at present, I feel, is that sig-like one liners at the end of a helpful post are probably acceptable to most. Other than that and the sticky on the general thread, full on recruiting is restricted to this dedicated empires forum. Is that so hard? Over the last couple of days, I think that's what everyone has been doing anyway, so let's just keep doing that for a while and see how it goes. OK? We don't need an extensive 'rule book' on this one - just a feel for a generally appropriate way to behave. No plan will get 100% approval from all participants - we just have to go with what feels right to the general majority, so let's just get on and do that. What is it you Americans say? "No harm, no foul?"

Re Post #111 by Exar and your first two questions: it's just too early to say - lets come back in three weeks and put our heads together over the impact of what we're talking about here, as a suggestion. Cheers!
