"April 7 – Aldarian New Year’s. This date celebrates the date that the Kingdom of Aldar was created. This is a very solemn date for Aldarians and is marked by quiet reflection. Kidding. It is celebrated by drinking heavily and behaving badly." (Taken from the Aldar web site.)

Solemnly drunk. Now that is a concept I can understand. So I guess I'll kick back tonight with my drinks, turn the lights down low, put on some real heart tugging blues while thinking about the joys of the Meta and the contribution Aldarians make to our Galciv way of life. To Aldarians, to DHABB! Cheers.

Might want to play that last one out a few more turns Bromoser. I am guessing that you aren't past 2190. Will double score.

Actually, if you look close, that one was a 1.20 game. I was playing it when I had this inkling to check for the update. After I submitted the four 1.49L games, I quickly finished the 1.20 and submitted it. I just finished 1.49M game. Looks good so far!

PS: SPLAT goes the Drengin

Hmmm I see one of our wayward Aldarians has submitted a game. Looks like Kelly got hit by score degradation big time though.

PS More baddies bought the farm!!!

I'm in the middle of a maso right now too. Altough I guess I'm always in the middle of game these days since I always start a new game right after I submit the last one. Of course, I usually don't finish games in one sitting. So Aldar, are you going to be playing AP soon? I think you will really enjoy it. The latest build is really good so far.

I'm waiting for it to get out of beta...

I write code for a living and really don't want to spend my free time testing

The sad thing is that 1.49M is probably less beta-like than the current 1.20 of GalCiv.

Anyway, score another victory for the "good" guys!

Hmmm. Perhaps it is time to make the purchase.

Now if I can just figure out how to keep the Arceans from wiping me out...

Hey Bromoser,
I'm going to upgrade to 1.49M tonight. Any words of advice?

Well here are few things to try and/or consider. I'm sure others will jump in with some alternate methods/observations.

1) Maximize diplomacy with party and racial picks.

2a) Trade techs with minors.

2b) Research diplomacy, trade ,and non-traditional techs. The non-traditional techs are seldom researched by the AI and make good trade bait.

3) Build 4-5 freighters right away. Trade with strongest military race and adjacent races.

4) Take advantage of AP's starbase cost rules. The first few are now free to build and the base cost is now 150 BC unadjusted for logistics.

5) "10-20 BC for 100 turns" bribes will keep badasses off your tail for awhile.

6) Look for two top militaries that have forces near each other and try to get them fighting by use of bribery. In 3 or 4 turns, they each could demolish each other to the point that your military is competitive. The downside is that one side might win keys battles and doesn't get weakened while gaining more planets.

7) Build combat transports when available and position them so you can grab weakened opponents' planets. Hint: I have not built battleship tech in the last 20+ games because at some point at least one AI will offer to trade it to you for a minor tech.

8) Experiment with strategies until you find one that fits your playing style.

9) Finally I would suggest you start at medium map size to get feet wet. Also play "maso" right now because playing lower levels won't help you to learn the unique aspects of "maso" level play. Save first turn so can replay same start conditions using various strategies so you can compare them easier.

Good Luck!!!

Sounds like the same game, only with more aliens

#223  by Citizen Moser_Alchemist - 4/14/2004 5:44:56 PM

Yes and no.

The AI is much better in the AP expansion, the starbase costs are more reasonable, and two extra aliens doesn't sound like much until you try to stay out of their way early on.

Speaking of the two new aliens, you have to choose what alignments you wish to use for them. I have played games with both set as neutral and games with one set at a good alignment and one set at an evil alignment. Both these combos seemed to work real well. Also check the alignments of all the aliens, since when I downloaded AP, they were all set to one alignment. I changed them to the traditional alignments for the original aliens.

The other aspect is the new ships available. I'm really undecided at this point if more ship types is a good thing or bad thing. In fact, right now I'm playing games with ship mods from "The Library" as well as ship mods I'm creating myself using GalCivWriter, in order to see whether they make the game better or just different.

I doubt the new ships will affect my games since usually the biggest thing I ever build are Dreadnaughts.

Upgraded last night, played one Maso game and got pounded by the Drath.

Then played the first campaign. Pretty cool stuff.

I usually pick random for the alien alignment.
