Realms Beyond - We seek challenge through variety.

The RB Metaverse empire is invite-only, but anyone can earn an invitation by agreeing to abide by our House Rules.

RULES for RB Players:

1) Submit (to the Metaverse) all games that you play. This is so that there will always be something at stake when you play, to keep it more interesting. Of course, we also want you to undertake challenges, so in order not to discourage risk taking and bold gaming, this rule has three exceptions:

1-A) If you play a no-win scenario, either by design or by luck of the draw, and you get crushed, do not submit. If you get stomped in the early game by a runaway AI many times your size or power, that's a no-win situation. Some maps put you in a very weak position. We trust you to use your own judgement, and to be honest with yourself about whether or not you had a chance to win and missed it, or never had a chance.

1-B) If you are attempting to increase the challenge (raising difficulty levels, new scenario arrangements, or experimental play) beyond your current comfort zone and you later find that you got in over your head, out of your depth, you do not have to submit. Your choice.

1-C) If you are playing a variant game, of any kind, choice of submission is up to you. We do not ever want to discourage experimentation and variety "because it could hurt my score".

2) Fun is our focus, not score. Fellow players from Realms Beyond will look past the score to evaluate your total performance level. Glory is available to those who test themselves and their abilities. Finding an "easy" way to play that scores highly will not advance your reputation in these parts. RB players are savvy, smart folks who embrace excellence and dedication. We know a good performance when we see it, regardless of what the score may say.

3) Do not abuse the reload option.

3-A) You may back up one time to benefit from limited spoiler information (scouting the map and then starting over). Better if you can succeed without spoilers, but they are allowed if you find your opening to have been unsatisfactorily managed. (We'd rather see you use limited spoilers openly than to get the same result de facto by quitting partial games and restarting until your opening judgement and luck turn out favorably).

3-B) If you lose, or find yourself in a losing situation, you may reload ONCE from any prior point in the game, and replay it. You can lean your alignment differently, settle the map differently, change your strategy in any way you deem appropriate. This is meant to allow room to learn the game, to experiment, to reduce the impact of terrain luck, and to give one chance to redeem a loss, but should not be abused.

3-C) You may reload without limit from crashes, game-altering misclicks, and other mishaps, as well as play across as many sessions as fits your gaming schedule.

4) Do not abuse Ctrl-N. If you draw a situation that does not fit well with the kind of game you wanted to try, you can reroll the map if you wish. However, no repeated use of map restarts in search of "perfect" layouts and ideal situations, to artificially deflate the challenge factor.

5) Observe the official Tactics evaluation. Do not use tactics that have been ruled as Exploits. This list may change as the game and our understanding of it evolve. Check the Realms Beyond website for the current Tactics evaluation list.

If you seek a culture that values excellence, that honors individuals for their character more than their ability, then you would fit in well at Realms Beyond. If playing the game and enjoying it is more important to you than accumulating statistics and the praise of others, then you are our kind of player and we invite you to join us.

To join Realms Beyond, you need only confirm your acceptance of the five rules listed above, then strive to adhere to them, to uphold a spirit of integrity and good fun. You can make this commitment in this thread, at the Realms Beyond forum, or in your application email when you make an official application. Go to our empire page by clicking our name on the Metaverse empire listing. Click the Join/Apply button. If you have committed to follow our rules, you will be added to the roster.

WELCOME TO REALMS BEYOND

This thread is home away from home, the Realms Beyond outlet here in the Stardock forum, where it is convenient for visitors to learn about us and for members of other empires to keep up with our activities. We also conduct business on our own forum.

Realms Beyond maintains a tradition of active sharing. Our players write AAR's from time to time. We have introduced the succession game concept to this community and we will continue to forward the cause of succession games. We have run a successful tournament for Civilization 3 since early 2002, and we anticipate the ability to start one up for the GalCiv expansion pack. Stay tuned to this thread for more information about our tournament, which will be open to the public, not just to RB members.

I'll post a comment: UGH! We're starting a brand new thread here, and you traipse through to advertise a proposal to help cut down on off-topic spam. Hmm. What an irony.

If this had been a mature thread, it wouldn't matter. Nobody new to the thread would even see it, and you'd be welcome to advertise empire-related business within reason. But being so close to the front, where everybody new will trip over it coming in the door, where we're trying to put our best foot forward and welcome people into our thread on a good footing, I must say it is an unwelcome intrusion.

Anyway, now back to the TOPIC for this thread, which is Realms Beyond and its business, our players and guests, and their interests. My apologies for the previous incident. Please ignore the bouncers as they eject the unlicensed solicitor from the premises.

I agree with Sirian on this one. This post was spam and nothing more. This thread is the (new) one place on the Galciv forums where us likeminded insane realmsbeyonders could get together and chat. Please don't spam it up with advertisements of any kind.

Thank you, Smegged.

Aye. Realms Beyond recruiting is something to worry about.

As for some more on topic and interesting news--I just finished my most exciting game ever. I hope to post an AAR soon. This one was much like Sirian's "Losing" game, only I never got to hear the track. I think I got you beat in bribes, though, since I probably shelled out about a half a million BC over the game. There is nothing worse than a runaway Arcean, IMO. What a ride! Would have been even more exciting had it pushed us over 2M. Ah well, guess that honor falls to someone else.

I've been following the Sirian team on your succession game with interest, but didn't want to post on CivFanatics as I presumed that was for team members only. Can I kibbutz here? Early in this game, one team member decided to trade a tech (Improved Environment, I think) and others gasped, putting forward the view that trading that tech advantaged the AI on the long term and should have been withheld if possible.

I realise the game is not being played at maso, but it caused me to reflect on the nature of the strategic process. At maso, most players are eventually outstripped in tech by one or more AIs - that is, the top AIs usually end up getting all the techs you have at some point. GalCiv is a game of time and space (no pun intended) that has some similarities to chess. In chess, one might seek a space advantage (to control more and more of the board) or a time advantage (to be two moves ahead of the opponent in striving for the same goal). Thus, trading away techs becomes an important decision making process that is not simply: "It'll help the opposition, so I'll keep it" but becomes: "If I trade this away NOW (rather than later, if at all) what TIME and SPACE advantages can I get for it?" I think the chess analogy is the sacrifice: giving away a key piece away to gain time and space for a successful attack. If I were able to trade Improved Environment for Advanced Trade (or whatever), the economic gain RIGHT THEN might well put me in good shape for years to come and outweigh the loss. Just musing

Wild Wombat: Thank you for your interest in our game . However, may I ask you not to give spoiler info about the teams' specific actions here, please?

We are always interested in lurkers' opinions, but we would prefer not to give spoiler information to the other teams. The info might not be that important, but we would prefer to stick to the "no spoiler" rule. You are welcome to discuss team actions, but please do so in the team threads; they are not restricted for lurkers, only for members of the other teams. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you just want to discuss the game / SG in a general manner, fell free to do so here, but please do not give information on specific actions of the teams (as long as the competition is running). Thank you in advance.

I will try to comment on your topic, but I can not do so at the moment, so unless someone else picks up that point, I will commment in a few hours in the team "G" thread.

Sirian: I hope it was ok that I answered instead of you, but I considered it better to comment immediately before a possible discussion started.

I hardly think that was a game breaking spoiler, given it's an early tech and your games are all well past that point - and my point WAS obviously general and not specific to that early tech mentioned. If I have offended, I apologise.

Wombat--if you want to post a question related to the team G game (and without revealing information gleaned from other teams' reports, then by all means post over at CivFanatics.

Civ3 succession games have a long history of entertaining questions/comments from the peanut gallery, and I would expect nothing different for how we run our GalCiv SGs. In fact, I encourage questions of the teams (taking care for spoilers), because that can help the lurking community (who might be too shy to ask) to help learn the game better.

Your specific scenario here was on the border of revealing spoilers, but I think you keep it on the right side of the line. Now that you know we like to have visitors in the SG threads--there should be no problem (we only ask that you check the iron paw at the door.)

I hardly think that was a game breaking spoiler

It's not, but we prefer no spoilers of any degree. If players have no information about what the other teams are doing, there's no cross-pollenation. Even small fragments of data about the actions of other teams may have some impact.

I realize there is a minor inconvenience factor in registering to CFC just to make a few posts. If you are willing to do that, though, that would be best. We could discuss the issue in Team G's thread, now while it's fresh. The only ones who won't see it there are the other teams, which is how it should be, and they can read it after their games are done. Or you could wait and we'll talk about it here on Stardock, after the games are closed.

Opinions about what constitutes "major" spoilers or "significant" spoilers may differ. That can of worms is best left closed, in our experience, and it is most easily left closed by holding to a standard of zero spoilers: all information relevant to a team's activity staying in the team thread, until the event concludes. That is the standard to which our tournament will be holding, as well. Players will not be permitted to talk about tournament results, at all, until closing day comes, when everybody reports at once. This policy has served us well in our Civ3 tournament, and in Civ3 multi-team succession games.

Anyone is welcome to post comments or questions IN the team threads, as long as they do not reveal anything about what the other teams are doing.

Thanks for your interest in the SG. I'll address your comments more directly in the Team G thread.

Darn, that seems like an intersting topic to discuss... and now I can't read it until we finish... and not participate. Ah well, the cost of doing business.

On a side note, is there a link to our exploit list anywhere. It would be nice to have them on a separate page, similar to the Civ3 page.

Ask and ye shall receive. http://www.realmsbeyond.net/galciv/empire.html Link
The list has all our empire rules--about halfway down the page is the meat of the exploits to avoid--some of which are OBE (e.g., the 1ip exploit).

I really enjoy particpating in the RBCG2. Its a great initiative.

This one however:

I think Exar was just politely asking for your opinion on the subject, allthough i can see that you might not want this as the second post of the thread, but i don't think he did anything to deserve an attack like that.

That's not the official list any more. In fact, it's not up yet, as we need to update the main site. We should discuss what to add to the list, as there is only one active item at the moment, and that's the bribing to lure away defenders move. Don't worry, though, we'll solidify and clarify the list before the tourney begins, for sure. Waiting on the expansion, to see what's been changed and what's been fixed.

Sorry for not putting in the disclaimer. That is the only available list right now, though we've discussed a few other items (and I am sure Sirian has probably written some that we have not discussed ).

Even before Walker's question, I copied the bait rape exploit to the Team E thread to clarify the rule, since that was/is the only active exploit listed on the site.

Sirian,

I would like to make it known that after observing you and the other Beyonders as well as perusing the information that is on your web sites I would like to align myself with the Realms Beyond if you and the others will have me. If accepted I am sure my involvement in the Realms would go beyond GalCiv as I am an old player of Civ way back on a 286/12 where a turn could take a long time to run. I also play the "D" and "D2" game as well.

I am nowhere near the experience level as you and your partners here in this or probably the other games but I think we are of similar outlook on ways of playing. Just to illustrate while playing my games I do save but never restart. I leave the game up and running straight through. I think the Realm and I would be a good match as far as integrity and values go. So If you will have me let me know and I will go click the link to request to be made a member.

Thanks,
oldgamster

I am an old player of Civ way back on a 286/12

I played a lot of Civ on my friend's Tandy. It was an 8086 turbo, so not as bad as a straight XT, but I'd say in the late game, it would take forty minutes to process the between-turns phase, for each turn. In Civ1, that is. Now that's dedication. I'd have killed for the high speed of a 286.

I always try to remember those days when I have the urge to complain about a game making me wait ten seconds because it's being a little slow.

The good ol' days. I can remember waiting for what seemed like forever to load a game on the C-64 using the tape deck. Or playing a very early ancestor of the internet MMORPG on a 300-baud modem. Ah the memories.

That's because it did take forever

Nah, a tad short of forever, it just finished loading while I was typing this.

Well, I can't claim to be quite as early an adopter of computer tech as some others. My (dad's) earliest computer was a 4 MHz IBM PC, on which I played Adventure, the original text-based adventure game. "You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike." But, I remember visiting friends who had Intellivision or a Commodore before that...
