Mayito:

I concentrate on researching techs I can trade, for techs I want. I don't worry too much about the AI having a tech advantage as long as I have what I need to vaporize them.

Also have +50 diplo abiliy pick and populist party.

...gotta do some work......

See? I warned you about enroaching Diplomats last night. Sure, they start off with a nice trade deal, then BAM! they start taking the important posts right off your back. Crafty fellows there. But the other fate would have probably been to fall victim to raging Jedi running amok in a manic state. I think I found part of the reason why. Master Yoda IS on Dagobah. Brewing swamp grass beer. And it is driving them all mad, mad I say!

Hey, where did everybody go? 2:45 w/o a post?? You will never catch the Jedi that way!

Were just resting our fingers after reaching posts 400 and 500 in the same day.

Hello (insert empire name here)!

This is your friendly Metaverse activities coordinator stopping by to remind you about the upcoming tournament. If you haven’t already stopped by The First Clone War thread, please do so now (or I’ll take all your booze). Wild Wombat, Exar Kuun, kasualkid, and other GalCiv overlords are working hard to bring you a new level of imperial pleasure (no, not the kind that goes “ba-a-a-a-a-a”). Team up with other empires no later than February 25th and post your team within The First Clone War thread. Hurry! Only one week left! And remember, since it’s just a game (a game where the losers are the one’s without a team), don’t get picky about who you team up with.

KitWarrior, Assistant Undersecretary of Galactic Activities Promotion

Well, I just finished my first 1.19 game, but it didn't submit. I'll check it again in the morning, but I've seen a few other posts on this. If I still don't see it, do I email CariElf about it?

Hello Guardians!

Hmmm... it seems noone was appointed for the night-watch. I guess the galaxy is well guarded only under specific time-zones .

Just an update on my yesterday game, in case you great strategists have some advice -- they're welcome, I need them all. In my all-demonic galaxy against me (saintly), I was prepering for war. 2 huge fleets, to take out the weaker of the two allies (the torians). Combat transports and several waves of antimatter missiles, a few overlords and 20 constructors to build a TS in an enemy sector. Scout ships had been sent near their main resources starbases to take them out prior to the attack. If the war lasted only a few months maybe it would be over before their allies (super powerfull arceans) join them in the war.

And then...

Assassination-war-event, with over 100 corvets appearing all over the map!

So now I'm at war with the Arceans !

No more surprise fleet attack, many AM missiles taken out by these stupid corvettes, no strike force nowhere near their main starbase sector (one sector with 4 fully developped resource starbases) and with several overlords ans a few excaliburs tearing through my defenses as if they're paper tigers. And with no nuclear teeths. It looked like no teeth at all the way that one excalibur cleaned my defending ships in orbit: several dreads an 2 overlords gone. It took me 6 AM missiles to destroy that ship!

Now I've taken out some of theirt starbases, 6-8 overlords that attacked my 2 milirary starbases (thankgod they're in the same sector so the defending ships have super high attack values), and took out one of their systems that had about 100 bi people in it. (it took me 110bi troops with the mini soldiers attack ).
I'm redirecting my constructors fleet towards a sector with 3 arcean systems, +/- 10 planets and ovetr half their population. If I can terror-starize them I might have a chance. But only because their torian ally haven't joined them yet! And if my constructors make it through to that sector safely. My problem is that my overlords cannot leave my military starbases sector, otherwise they'd be promptly destroied!
That's on my "north" frontier.

On the south, there are the arceans original planets (the north ones came from the drengin). with their excaliburs coming at me. The distance buys me some time, but those ships are fast!

My last problem, but by any means the least of them, is that since all my trade routes went to the arcean, to avoid deficit my speding rate is limited to 8% . For now the freighters I've built cannot reach torian space because of the last arcean corvets that must have appeared in torian space where I have no way of seeing them. If they stay out of the war maybe I can make them switch sides, but considering they are evil that's unlikelly.

yesterday I thought that throwing old Yor parts at them was a joke, but I think tonight I'll have to consider it, although I'm not sure how much good it will do againt their excaliburs.

Since I've never build these ships before (and I'm nowhere close to doing it now: I don't have the tech for it and my reserch is at 0 any way) I don't know what it takes to destroy them, short of a full volley of AMM (which I'll soon not have anymore...)

So, any thoughts?

The galaxy (medium map) looks something like:
TTTAAAAAA
TTAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAHH
AAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAA

where H stands for human (who cares about the rest...)

Edit: it was medium rare galaxy at starts, but the drengin had a +13PQ event and suddenly there were high PQ planets everywhere, but I couldn't grab enough of them.

(1) If you've got reasonable speed, try ship-luring. Enemy overlords will often willingly chase starfighters across the map, ignoring your planets and starbases.
(2) If you have any techs or trade goods to trade to the Torians, do so. You might be able to buy freighters off him and use them to set up new trade routes.
(3) Make peace with the Arceans. Offer him money spread out over 100 turns, if you have any money, or if you can raise some by setting spending to 0 for a few turns. The price usually gets lower the longer the war goes on. If you can create and maintain peace, then you have a chance of beating him by less military means, like terror stars or culture bombs.
(4) Don't get into that kind of situation in the first place. I never do.

1,2,3 : Thanks for the advices. I'll try the luring thing since I have gravity accelerators, but their 15 moves excalibur is a killer. No techs, the Arceans already traded with them, I gave the lasts that I had, but since the war, no more research is done. And I'm afraid if I make peace with them, and then attack the torians (my first intention) they'll attack me again. I'm keeping my treasury to offer peace to the torians if they ever decide to join their allies in war. I need the little trade I have left. I'll try the freighters thing. Maybe it will work!

4 : thanks... sort of . It's the start game that made the situation evolve like this: the arceans were alone in the south HALF of the map, and grabed 4 star (one third of the stars with good planets in the galaxy. All others civs were in the other half. Drengin were neutral, Altarians, Saintly, and all other various degrees of evil. They first took out altarians, then all minors and then drengin. It was always a 3 on 1 war, with everytime the arceans taking out the planet in the end. Except for the carinoids, when I saw they're about to fall I took it first. Then a first war on me: the yor attacked. After they lost one planet, they gave themselves to the Arceans.
At that point the galaxy looked like what I described above, and things were pretty much lost, but we will fight to the end. (I was inspired by my wife's family: she had relatives grand-parents & oncles in leningrad, I think, during th WW2. At some point things were desperate, no more food, no soldiers. The workers that buid tanks in the last factories there, when the tank was finished, they would drive it to the battlefield themselves).
(and I don't like quitting a game, except if it's lost in the 20-30 first turns)
We shall die, but we will not yield. No to some ##@%%# Arceans.

If only I could stop those damned Excaliburs.

#517  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 2/18/2004 6:35:16 AM

Yes, but the Russians weren't facing Excalibur-class warships.
I'd make peace with the Arcs if at all possible, set up a load of trade routes, then (a) build a lot of anti-matter missiles, or (b) build a load of constructors.

Why are we having our discussions on someone else's thread?

Indeed.

I started it here yesterday with Terl & Theoden. Today, well, it's just inertia I guess...

Edit: I'm transfering my next comment to good old Pony

Oh sure, blame us

I hope the game turns around for you. I agree with you "never give up, never surrender" is the way to go.

That is how I play. I just don't submit the losses. I got my butt kicked on painful last night...oh well, that is how one learns, I guess.

I've lost a few games that I haven't submitted (my attempts at crippling and maso). But this one I will (it is a "painfull" one -- and since I managed to win in that level before, it is only fair that I submit this one, my computer revenge). It has been a very interesting one. It had many twists. Alliances were made and cancelled, even war events between allies. The Yor were most powerful and were destroying the Arceans. So I attacked them too, and so did everyone else. Result: they' were destroyed, but then the arceans took over the galaxy. My gemes are more straightforward usually, with less 180° plot twists. If humans prevail in this one, it will be a glorious victory, that will inspire songs and stories (nothing like a little klingon talk to raise the spirits of my almost defeated army)

Anyway, things are looking more & more like the Battle of the Line, in Babylon 5

I've only submitted one and I've still got that savegame. I don't think I've seen the last of that map...

Good morning everyone! Hope everybody had an excellent 16 hour timeperiod!

Nastavnik and Downie, you're most certainly welcome to discuss strategy and anything else you want to here...after all, we are a Fellowship colony!

I decided to play a Huge/Crippling last night for some odd reason. If you ever want to feel superior to the computer, drop down a difficulty level for one game. Let's just say the Yor eradication was very pretty, at least on my part! Lots of pretty fireworks in space as their fleet fell victim to my invasion fleets...

I'll probably be back to Maso again for the next game. Even though I had quite a bit of fun slicing and dicing the AI, nobody really gave me much of a challenge. Even the Drengin, who managed to build a somewhat respectable fleet, didn't show much animosity to my fleets of Avatars and AMMs.

Oh, well...like I said, it was fun and that's the important thing. I don't think I want to limit myself to Maso games only...sometimes you have to let your hair down a little!
