Another thot on writing, for those who are interested. I had a professor in college who said that only 1 in 10 manuscripts--from a beginning writer--is worth reading. And that the only way to proceed from that point was to write the nine bad ones in order to get to that tenth good one! You have got to write, in order to become a better writer! There is no other way. So get to it! (Boy am I going to regret encouraging you to get your bad writing out of the way, all the while being on a public, and dearly loved, forum! )

[Note: another 'top of page', accidentally but providentially, take by a Guardian for the Guardians! It seems to be my day!]

It's probably not THAT hard. It's hard for me, because I'm the sort of person who would give up after reading something like, "Before you send us anything, phone first."

Actually most of my rejections came in the form of "Though your work shows promise, it does not fit our plans at this time... Blah blah blah..."
P.S. If you're willing to work hard and long (and pay about 2-5 grand) you can self publish. Alot of these glamour publishers around do just that. Most will help you with a catchy title and cover. You pay them, they print copies. That's about it. I suspect Renegade's link is one such publisher.
The trick then is YOU have to get A local bookstores to stock it. After that, it's a trick to get a bookstore to stock it regionally. You'll have to run around all over the place with about 1,000 copies at a time in your trunk. You'll have to give 10-25 copies pretty much as a primer gratis untill it sells. They pretty much take it on consignment. You have to take about 50 nos to get a yes, then you have to go promote it yourself because they won't. Once it gets some sales, then they come running.

I have an undergrad degree in English and like almost everyone who does that, I wanted to be a professional writer. No luck...

I did a masters in C.S. and worked my way up to system architecture. Nomially, I design multi-million dollar computer systems / projects. Actually, I am a glorified technical writer. The writing (particularly the creative process that comes before sitting down to type) probably would be fun if it weren't for the deadlines... I suspect that any job with regular deadlines stops being fun.

Anyway, I have written some articles / done some editing outside fo the job. Now that I have build up some non-fiction credits, I regularly turn down requests for my writing.

I'm not a particularly talented writer, so if you're willing to write non-fiction - I'm proof that it is not a hard field to break into.

My dad is a technical writer in the medical field. Makes about $140K a year. Not too bad.

Okay, you got me. Am I sufficiently humiliated now?

You're the number one player. You have to expect to be a target. To quote Homer Simpson, "If celebrities didn't want people pawing through their garbage and saying they're gay, they shouldn't have tried to express themselves creatively."

Thank you very much I truly appreciate the feedback. There is much more to come on my Destiny's Avenger story...

I do save the whole thing as I go so it can be posted when it is done (and so I can add/edit later).

I weighed in on the empires/Galactic Forum thing but to be honest with you, I'm just sick and tired of being told where I can post.

You were a bit grouchy this morning over there, Theoden, but it is not like you were too off base. The frustration is understandable. If I had not been having so many problems in real life over the last few months, I would have struck my blow to ease the Great Experiment earlier. But I am back in the saddle again. The old Gerakken is slowly fading back into focus. The Meta is in real trouble now!

As for the old empire threads, history time! The Great Experiment had a long evolution time and there was no one thing that started it. True, I was gone when the split happened and did not return until the separation was complete (and even jettisoned my last thread there because it related totally to empiring), but a select few nay-sayers were criticizing all the empire comm threads from way back. That small group thought the GF should only be tech support basically. Never mind the structure of the board needed to be changed in that we needed a real search function with the ability to look inside threads. If they couldn't have their issues addressed on page one and couldn't get the board upgraded for a real search function, then blame the empires!

Then we empiring types help do ourselves in. Multiple recruiting threads per empire, jutting into nearly every thread to launch recruiting drives that were answered with even more militant recruiting attempts, recruiting sig lines tacked onto every post, and more. This all lead to us recoiling in collective horror and issuing a cease fire. But what was necessary then to stop the insanity is now an unneeded "ancient" tradition. A bad collective memory tainting the future of empiring as a whole. The very same massive social pressure that led to the Great Experiment can punish the individuals if the madness starts to resume.

Some of you newer folks may not catch the significance of all this because you missed what was the Golden Age of Empiring that was the spring and summer of 2003 roughly. I was there and I was one of several who helped create that age. As one who has shaped the history of the board and empiring, as one who contributed much back in that age, I know what could be again. I just came back to see what it had degraded into and feel that I held my tongue too long due to my real life problems and time constraints. If I have the strength and the time again, I will do my part to return to another great age of empiring. One that enhances the community like it did back then, and not an age that makes empiring look cheap, petty, and thoughtless. I just hope some of the other old architects of the Golden Age feel somewhat the same way and will try to pick up the slack themselves if they can.

Anyone want to read my writing tips?
YEP!

OK, they're on the Prancing Pony now. Read it when you have the time. It's not a very well written essay (which probably makes me an evil hypocrite), but I think there's some useful stuff there.

But an evil hypocrite could generate more interest in the story for the reader

Thanks Matthew. There are some useful tips in there.

I am off work today so got in a game. Suppose to be outside powerwashing deck. But one game could not hurt, could it?

Anyway bought diplomatic translators early and sent me in the red for a year or 2. Opinions please, Are any of the early trade goods worth putting yourself in a hole for, or best just to purchase from others. Usually the minors end up with and are easy to deal with any way.

If you are playing a build where the minors can build trade goods, it usually isn't too bad buying them from the minors by trading tech. Costs a bit up front to buy Dip Trans, but pays you back in the long run. Just look out when an "incredible" level Altarian builds them first. Uugh!

I worry about the wonders that I want first. The minors can steal those away from you too in the earlier builds of the game.

Okay, to keep our little game going:
Okay, you got me. Am I sufficiently humiliated now?
You're the number one player. You have to expect to be a target. To quote Homer Simpson, "If celebrities didn't want people pawing through their garbage and saying they're gay, they shouldn't have tried to express themselves creatively."
I'm not a celebrity, but I am a target, which is expected and I thought was implied in my post:
Okay, you got me. Am I sufficiently humiliated now? Well, maybe not…please continue....

Actually, I like being a target. I worked for it, I earned it! So bring it on....you'll never take me alive!

There were two possible things that fixed it, try either or both:1) I went down to the 99 turn offer2) I was saving the game and reloading in between making the deal and attacking. This was because the planet was "out of range" for my attack, and I needed to get the game to recalc after purchasing the starbase. To get it to work right, I backed off to an earlier saved game, then ran a constructor up and built my own starbase to increase range before making the deal to get the attack force,Hope this helps. [insert fingers crossed emoticon here]

GH, I had a save from many turns before. Replayed from there with a new twist: the Fundamentalists showed up and took a few of the Yor's planets. Anyway, I saved at several stages (prior to making the deal, after making the deal, and after completing their annihilation). The deal I made was ~1800/turn for 99 months, in return for their techs, Dreadnoughts, and resource-based SBs. I have tried exiting and re-starting the game with every combination I can think of, but that crossed-fingers emoticon just isn't doing the trick. (You see, there was a reason you couldn't find it--it doesn't exist!)

I suppose this qualifies as 'cheese' anyway, so I'll probably restore pre-deal tonight, wipe them out, do without the Dreadnoughts, and make a run for the resources. Thanks for your response, though, I'm glad it worked out for you!

As mentioned in my previous post, I ran into the 'Fundies' for the first time early this morning. I recall one or more of you writing that you had negotiated exorbitant sums of money from them. The best I could seem to do was a couple thousand per turn over a 12-month period. Am I missing something, or did I misunderstand?

#7067  by Citizen Genghis Hank - 4/7/2004 6:06:39 PM

Hmmm, I really thought the problem was the save/restore between the deal and the attack. If not, then this is a darn annoying bug to pop up randomly.

GH, so there's cheese, but there's a hole in the cheese. So, it's swiss cheese, right?

Major: It wasn't the Fundies, it was the Draginol event. (it doesn't happen very often)

Now, some smart-aleck is going to come along and accuse me of having a holier-than-thou attitude!

(Sorry, I just keep thinking up these really bad jokes and puns. Somebody low-tech-Greldonize me--the GalCiv version of electroshock!)

Greldon, thanks for clarifying! I was still stunned by how much money they were willing to fork over for seemingly nothing.

The Fundies appear quite often. They always take over evil systems. Sometimes I Greldonize 'em, and sometimes I just ignore 'em.

I raided Tortuga a few minutes ago and stole #1800. It was SWEEEET!!!

PS: I did it the right way!
