7800 - what the heck, I'll have it anyway. Stolen by the Centurions to preserve it from raiding pirates, guardians and diplomats

I didn't have the heart to steal big numbers from two empires in one day. But I guess those Centurions are ruthless. Just watch out, he'll be back next year for more tribute.

Oh, my "sans terror star" technique is simple: squish the holdout like a bug with an old fashioned invasion if they won't flip or get cozy enough to ally with me. I don't use destructive terror stars and have only resorted to party palace terror stars twice in 28 or 29 games. I don't need them.

One more quick question. Will an AI flip if you allied with them?

#7805  by Citizen Kazzryl - 4/10/2004 8:09:30 PM

I think the previous problem was killing trade routes too soon, as well as turning evil. And as for destabilizing, it is not clear enough to use that technique.

Yes, I believe the alliance does not effect it. You know how to use that button at top of screen to check your influence level in a sector? If you get doulble the influence it usually only takes a couple of turns to turn over to you.

#7807  by Citizen Genghis Hank - 4/10/2004 8:18:30 PM

Hey LW and ED! Thanks! I want the black smiley next

Kazzryl, AFAIK, planets will filp unless you are at war with them. It seems to take me longer when the target planet has one of my trade routes, but that may just be my perception. Knowing that the target is about to flip anyway, I try to start a different TR up so I don't loose the income when it flips. Don't know enough about the destabilization process to help you with an answer to that part.

Congrats for that new shield young Guardian.
But beware the dark path may be looking the easy and fast one, but for sure it is not the best way to go on a quest like the ony you and your friends wander on!

#7809  by Citizen Kazzryl - 4/10/2004 8:25:13 PM

I went back a few turns, and changed a few things. Mind you, I am playing the newest version of AP, at tough difficulty, on small maps.

Turning evil does seem to play a role, destablilizing is not clear enough to use, trade routes seem to keep them happy, but need to be ended before you can flip them (as long as they have income, it will be more difficult to flip).
Now, the biggest surprise, full influenced party palaces (373+ culture) in an adjacent sector seems to flip them, and there is no need to build military modules on the palaces (ie: terror stars). This is at least what I am finding.
Thanks for the help guys!

It can. Peace matters little in the end when it comes to individual flips. The only restriction is that you cannot win culture victory if at war with a major (or before 2190). An allied alien down to his last planet or two may choose to surrender instead, but maybe not to you despite the alliance. The alliance just improves the odds by some unknown (but seemingly small) amount that a surrender will go your way.

As for destab, it does have noticeable effects if you put enough into it over time. The quickest effect is an immediate drop in alien morale on planets already below 100. As the money from destab builds up over time, the alien will build more morale buildings and even divert ships there to act as counter-measures. Eventually, when it looks hopeless culture-wise, the alien will start stripping the planet of one building at a time. The problem is that it can require a hefty investment over many, many turns to pay off. That is money a lot of folks would rather spend in something that can be put to more immediate use, like warships, starbases, or even espionage for tech steals. Destab can be anywhere from a nearly ineffective technique against a strong alien economy to a devastating one that can gut a weak alien with a small economy in only a few months. This highly unpredictable nature makes destab unpopular.

Welcome Tiber87!!

An advantage to being allied with the AI is you can put the party palaces in their sectors. They don't ask you to get rid of them.

Seems I had some problems with my ISP earlier. But, I've got it all worked out now.

Hey XGE!

Statbot is showing your average dificulty at 9.17 right now. Shouldn't be too many more for you. It should change somewhere between 9.25 and 9.5. The simple game is probably the thing that is slowing you down.

It took me 14 games at crippling to get my shield up to painful, and will probably take another 25 or so to get it to crippling, if I don't move into maso.
