Peace Phoenix, thanks. I read your write-up, but I didn't see anything that would give me a hint about my missing 26mpts. (You're not hiding them from me, are you? ) |
|
Since I play version 1.2, I will have difficulty to hide something about version 1.49 I am not sure what could have earned you these missing mpts (maybe reserching all techs)
My game wasn't about earning the most points, but living without war, and lots of trade in a maso universe

Morning Guardians!
Everyone seems to have been having a BOOM-tastic time last night.
Congrats to all who are moving up in the metaverse - just how many can we get into the top 25?
Major D - just a couple of techs away probably. What have you got the AIs alignments set to? Scores are better for more evil alignments.
GH - 55K for a medium crip... WTG!

I was thinking we should let Theoden get post 10,000 too. I don't think even the pirates would take it if we asked them to save it for Theoden. |
|
Indeed, I don't know if you noticed but you grab 9000 and I believe that we all should honor post 10000 for Theoden, he deserves it. And congratulations to all the Guardians for their magnificent performance. Hats off!!!
PS: Those little shinny lights on your rear mirrow is the GROSS fleet full spead ahead!!!!

Hiya Guardians,
Wanted to wait until I contributed some to the group before I jumped in. Been manageing meso/tiny small and mediums for a bit now... take me FOREVER though.
Got my first Meso/Large last night. Only 33k though... I can't seem to kill off the last race before I get too much influence to end the fight.
I also read in here about MM's Meso guide... didn;t see it on the Web site though, throw me a bone if you got one!
I am at 52k now and 366 overall I think. Not terrible. Hope to move up as I can... can't get too many games in a week though as my games tend to take forever.
Anyway been in the Empire for about 3 weeks now and wanted to say hiya!

I wonder which is better: +10eco and +10research--- or +20 social. |
|
Not easy: +10 eco => more taxes => can increase spending rate => more social power or research power IF the spending rate isn't at 100%
+10 research => more spending in research but could need to lower spending rate to avoid deficit
+20 social => more spending for manufacturing social project (not sure if this lead to free manufacturing power) => need to lower rate when making social push, BUT they could last shorter => sooner to switch to 100% research.

Looks like you ended the game before 2190 |

No, it is a 1.2 game, and a Large/Maso/Alliance. Score sounds right.

Hi guys! Just popping in before I leave for my interview.
Congrats to everybody for your successes! I'm going to need to update the website again!
Alarac, glad you could drop in! I hope you're enjoying the game and the empire. And don't feel like you have to wait to say anything around here, we're a very talkative bunch and the conversations don't always center around the game!
Thanks for keeping me in mind for post 10000! I'd love to get it, but with my erratic online time lately who knows if I'll be online to take it. Let's see, we should probably hit 10,000 sometime tomorrow. I'll try to be around then!
| |
|
I've updated the website. Sorry it's taking me so long to get the changes up.

With the way you guys are playing, I'll have to give Top 25 medals to everybody pretty soon!
Okay, gotta run! See everyone later!

Magnumaniac, first of all thank you for your guide. I could never have played that game that well without your step-by-step guidance. (And even with that by my side, I took several missteps of my own doing! I can hardly wait to 'do it right' the next time out! BOOM, here I come!)
To answer your question, I played with a mix of AI alignments (a la the original settings). Think I'll stick with that mix on my next try--in large part to change a single factor (my experience) at a time.
I'm certain that you were right about being short a few techs. Probably the most significant mistake I made was researching Basic Environment Control 'out of order'. I researched something else ahead of it (thinking that my 'research train' would be running at higher speed soon, and then it would take me the same amount of time to get the slightly more expensive tech), but what happened was that my build queue ended up having Manufacturing Center before Habitat Improvement! This cost me morale, which cost me population growth, which cost me taxes, and became a significant 'speed bump' in my overall progress. Took me a while to recover!
Also, towards the end I was having difficulty throwing enough bones (aka techs)to the now insatiable Drengin and Yor, to keep them in a Friendly state of mind. Had I done the research in the right order I strongly suspect that this would not have been the case.
I love this game!
Alarac, welcome to the community!
Theoden, best of luck in your interview! I know that we all look forward to hearing how it went, and are all hoping the best for you!
And finally, a good morning to all!

Good luck Theoden (insert fingers crossed smiley here).

Definitely a bump somewhere then, as I usually have about 30+ spare techs to choose from.

Magnumaniac, I definitely think the 'bump' was my mis-ordering near the very beginning--and it's fascinating to me that the 'ripples' of that mistake (which directly impacted a smooth growing of my economy) could be seen throughout the remainder of the game! Very cool, in my mind! I look forward to playing again with the identical settings, just to see how much of a difference "learning from my mistakes" will make!
By the way, when I mentioned that the Drengin and Yor were insatiable, I meant that it was costing just about a tech a turn (each) to keep them at Friendly! (Again, it will be interesting to see how it plays out the next time.)
Question: do you do anything to make it appear that you have a military presence (as I believe that military strength factors into interrace relations in this game)? Like buying or trading for ships that you can park in orbit around some of your systems? I ask because there was no question that I was the weakest civ, and it seemed only natural that they would begin their hostilities with me! (In their position, I certainly would have.)

No - I only ever have ships when buying them to invade with, then usually disband them once that particular invasion is finished.
Sounds like you were missing a trade route to the Drengin and Yor - Usually only need to throw each AI one tech a year to keep them at friendly.

Interesting. I'm assuming that you don't want to carry the maintenance costs. What about gifting them to an AI (in place of a tech or two)? Is that a problem since it would 'widen' the military gap?

No, I just can't be bothered sending them half way across the galaxy for the next invasion.
What about gifting them to an AI |
|
Now there's an idea - give them to an AI, let them handle the logistics of sending them back to their planets, then buy them back to invade....

Boy, that Chaotic Evil symbol in your sig line says it all, doesn't it?! (I could almost hear your 'Magnumaniacal laugh'--quick, put a trademark symbol on it--all the way here in Seattle!)

Well, it just didn't seem right sending a few hundred billion sentient beings to their death every couple of hours and coming out of it being described as "pure good".

Magman, reminds me of the dialog in "Grosse Pointe Blank", where the two federal officers are deciding when (not 'if') they can legitimately kill Grocer.
McCullers: Man, why don't we just do his job, so we can do our job and get the f*** out of here?
Steve: What do you mean, "do his job?" What am I, a cold-blooded killer? I'm not a cold-blooded killer.
McCullers: Now, wait a minute ...
Steve: No, you wait a minute. You want to kill the good guy but not be the bad guy. Doesn't work like that. You have to wait until the bad guy kills the good guy, then when you kill the bad guy, you're the good guy.
McCullers: So -- just to clarify -- if we do his job we're the bad guys, and if we do our job we're the good guys.
Steve: Yes.
McCullers: That's... great.
