Sounds like someone downloaded the "free" version of the divx bundle, or something similar
Can be easily removed, or a simple pop-up stopper (such as the one from www.panicware.com) blocks them quite effectively.
Oh, and don't worry ED, this servant of evil is in a computer free zone as of tomorrow at 6pm, not returning till next Monday.

Loopcub, suggest that you read my complete game strategy in the "maso strategies" thread over at the Senate Halls, which is geared towards Huge/rare maps.
It's not meant to be followed to the letter (as that would take all the fun out of the game), but should help you with a few pointers on beating maso on large maps with only 3-4 planets of your own.
The bottom line is it all hinges on high diplomacy and lots of gifts to keep them sweet until you're in a position to ally or blow them away. Ten system invasion alpha strikes can be done, but take a lot of setting up and ship manouvering - work out where you need to supplement the fleets you are going to buy, position these extra ships first, then buy the entire enemey offensive fleet and attack in the same turn before they have a chance to build more.
