I would start with the Denon DVD-2910. It plays DVD-Audio, SACD, mp3, wma, video cds, audio cds, some DVD +/- R/RW, and most CD-r/RWs. IT's progressive scan, has selctable outputs for 480p/720p/1080i. Also has all of the connections you'll need.

I won't go in there. Ever.

But on cheap DVD players...well, I don't know really. Some are good, but the DSPs and decoders are generally second class. You could pick up a decent progressive scan unit from Best Buy as long as it has component out (I assume your TV would support that) and has a good resolution. I encourage you to get something with DVD-A and/or SACD playback ablility. These formats may replace CDs purley through the quality of sound on them.

My dad has the Denon DVD-2900, and I love it. However, I have a Panasonic Home Theater in a Box (HTIB)and it gets the job done. Good color/black levels, crisp picture, etc. It cost me about 500 for the whole thing. If you already don't have a sorrund/home theater setup, look at those.

I use to buy high end audio but learned the tech just moves to fast. I had a beautiful Rotel system and just to upgrade the surround sound processor was 2,500 dollars. So I said screw that and bought the top of the line Pioneer reciever for $750.00 7.1 tech with microphone to set up your speakers and in 3 or so years if the tech changes I won't cry if I have replace it. Now using my main Rotel amp in bridged mode pumping big pure watts into my passive Sub the rest of the systems is all in box's.

Speakers are about the only thing thats safe putting money in. I have Paradigm speakers which are great and will last years.

Chip, I have been using some of your strategy and some of my own since I have some other mods and it is working well. Many thanks to you. Question though. Do you rush by the TGs or develop themover time? My auto save is set to every 2 turns so if someone else gets them I can reload and rush buy (insert cheese here). I play heavy economics so money is not a problem after the first 24 mos. Last gane I ended up 10,000 bc positive. The game before I was 62,000 bc pos.

FC, I don't put any bonus on economic. I put +60% to research!!! I never have to rush buy anything. I don't try for frictionless clothing, galactic exchange, or the one that gives +20 to hit points (forgot what its called now), because the AI usually have them made before I've even researched the right line to get the tech that unlocks them. Starting in the middle, I usually have to watch spending and tax rate until about '92 or '93, after that the economy just takes off!

Last gane I dropped eco some and added some reasearch. Went much better. I switched to a no starbase strat and was still able to pull down +200 BC/MONTH by '87. Must be the mods I'm running. I started by following your tech tree but I found that I could sneak a couple greens and blues in occasionally before the others could. They love it when I gift them those. I still ahve an auto-survey problem that starts about '84. I have some anomaly mods so I take the time to look for the next one when the ship stops. Also I get an "Ah more presents" reply sometimes and they won't take the gift. Have yall seen that?

FC, the "Ahhh, more presents" appears when the AI have just changed relations with you (Meaning they improved), and that at this time they will go no further. Wait a couple of turns then try to gift them again.

What Brand/model is it?

JVC XV 521 I think I bought it 3 years ago. Has digital audio outs coaxial and optical. Decodes DTS and dolby.
Video Component out puts. TV says it's getting 480i from it. Just had to change some of menu settings on the DVD player. I now wish I read the manual 3 years ago. Has a bunch of things in the menus that I should have changed for better sound and picture. You know how it is, plug it in it works, what more is there to know.
