1850...

Westward expansion forces the issue of slavery to the forefront of American politics. Senator Henry Clay introduces the Compromise of 1850, which admits California as a free state but, in order to demonstrate the federal government's fundamental support for slavery, establishes a federal Fugitive Slave Law.

President Zachary Taylor dies of indigestion after 16 months in office, thought to be brought on by too many iced cherries and milk consumed at the opening of the Washington Monument. Vice President Millard Fillmore takes his place.

The Taiping Rebellion against the Chi'ng dynasty begins in China, led by mystic Hung Hsiu-ch'iian, who believes himself to be related to Jesus Christ. The rebellion will rage for 15 years. Western armies will ultimately play an important role in its suppression.

The first national women's rights convention in the United States is held in Massachusetts.

In another important move for women's liberation, I.M. Singer invents the sewing machine.

German physicist Rudolf Clausius states the second law of thermodynamics, that heat cannot pass from a cooler to a warmer body, but only the other way round.

Literary critiques of the decadence and inequality of 19th century society abound, as Charles Dickens publishes David Copperfield and Nathaniel Hawthorne writes The Scarlet Letter.

P.T. Barnum brings Swedish soprano Jenny Lind to the United States, and huge crowds come out to hear the Swedish Nightingale.

Young Bavarian-American Levi Strauss ushers in a new era in American fashion when he invents blue jeans.

Hmmm...this is an important move for women's lib?

Well, it's time to hit the road! Hopefully I'll have a little time to kill Yor tonight...barring objections from the ole ball n' chain. She doesn't read this forum, so I'm safe saying that!

Have a great evening everybody! Remember to go vote and those Guardians who haven't registered please visit http://diplomats.galciv.org/forum/index.php Link and do so!

And now, just for you. Pirate tv brings you the secret behind Lothmorg's gaming....

We cut to a scene in Costa-Rica.
Lothmorg is talking to Kathy-Lee Gifford.

Lothmorg: Kathy, that was a wonderful Idea. I'm so glad you dumped Frank. You're wonderful.

Kathy: Isn't child labor beautiful?

Cut to factory scene
Kathy Lee: GET SEWING NOW!!!! OR I'LL DOCK YOU A PENNY!!!!!
Kid: But Mistress, we don't make a penny?
Kathy Lee: That's right, you don't. But I'll whip you!!!.
Lothmorg...YOU OVER THERE. GET BACK ON YOUR COMPUTERS... GET PLAYING GALCIV NOW!!!!
Kid: But my fingers are bleeding from hitting the mouse too much. Did you have to put spikes on it?
Lothmorg: Oh yes. Complain complain complain.

Cut to Reporter: Lothmorg of course denied interviews and issued this statment.

Kid's working in my factory? I never saw it.
Kathy Lee: He only has eyes for me (giggle)

OH LOTHMORG!!!

Actually, Greldon and I are in partnership to take over the metaverse. We're still squabbling over who gets which half, but that's a minor detail.

Here's a great article written in 1900 on the subject. It offers some insight.

No offense to Lothmorg, but I'll have to sit on Greldon's side. My bright blue smiley told me too.
