BTW, Stellar cartography allows you to see yeloow stars on the map. The research path is : com theory > universal translator > nano electronic > stellar cartography.
Some people start off by saving, enabling cheat keys to reveal the map, then reloading the save from before cheats were enabled. They don't consider it cheating since the AI already knows where the good planets are at the start.
Personally, I think that's too much effort, so I just reduced the cost of Stellar Cartography to 0. Now all races start with that tech."
Okay so how do we do this. Talk about a time saver.

In GalCiv's data folder (C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations\Data is the default if you installed it from the retail CD) there's a file called GCTech.TECH. Open that up with Notepad and search for the line that says "TECH 140 StellarCartography". A few lines under that you'll see one that says "Research_Cost". Change it to 0 and everybody starts with Stellar Cartography.
Okay it worked. I was expecting the wrong thing. Back to the old way.

I would still save and look so you know where everyone is but you can sure elliminate a lot of galaxies that are not worth the time to look at. Major time saver.
I altered Reasearch inc to remove the PQ bonus and increased sensor range. I can see my sector plus 2 sectors in every direction. If I don't see at least 3 yellow stars I restart. Purpose of the save reload is just to get the freighters there quicker. I usually trade techs for a few and build the rest.
