Also, the media is up to its hype again, granted it is true this has been a bad month for American soldier casulties, but calling this month "Bloody April" is just too much negative glamorizing. In my opinion.

Haven't heard that one yet. That's over the top! You know the news biz... If it bleeds, it leads!

They say the heat was what finally did it.

Thats the way I understand it, the heat started to melt the bits that were supposed to keep the building up if a plane did hit.

Politicians to take responsibility, not likely to happen

Those that do take repsonsibility and try to do a good job normally end up getting forced out of office by the media circus that ensues. At the end of the day we pay the media's bills and so ultimately the people themselves are at least partially responsible. In the end we get the government we deserve.

Oh no! Are you trying to say that Tony Blair is all my fault?

One question for the Brits in the crowd:

What percentage of incumbent MPs are re-elected when there is a general election? In the U.S., at least in the House of Representatives (2-yr elections), it is ridiculously high.

Highly variable, depends on how the governments doing really, in '97 we saw the biggest swing ever I believe, roughly one third of the house of commons lost their seats, last election almost no MP's from any party lost their seats. This time however we expect a huge change, possibly in the order of one hundred MP's(650 ish in total) losing their seats to opposition parties. Tony is going down, maybe not this election but the next one for sure. Elections can be up to five years apart, the exact timing is decided by the PM but the max is five years, normally averages at four.

Thank you. I have a general understanding of the Parlimentary election system, but until now have had no knowledge of turnover.

OT--Any Londoners have some suggestions for a short trip? The Mrs. and I are in staying in London at the beginning of May before heading off to Cairo. Our hotel is right by Buckingham Palace. Much obliged for any info you could provide. If lengthy, feel free to email me. sheridan.home@verizon.net Email

Down as much to total voter apathy as anything else.

There is very little difference between the policies of the two main parties at present, and they all seem to be either bordering on corrupt, or completely incompetent. Primarily, they have all forgotten the principles behind the creation and existence of the "House of Commons" - they are members of the common people (i.e. not aristocracy as in the House of Lords). They think now that they are above the everyday folk living in the country and can ride roughshod over public opinion, when in fact they are elected to represent the views of the community that voted for them - regardless of their own personal opinions.

Sounds like a similar problem in the House of Representatives--our lower house.

#285  by Citizen Magnumaniac - 4/20/2004 3:59:02 PM

Yeah - career politicians. Yuck.

I personally think that anyone who *wants* to be a politician should immediately be banned from ever being elected.

Must see's for London:

West-end - you have to go and see a show, theres so many there bound to be one will like, then its a short trip down the road where you can see Trafalgar square and Nelson's Column. Plus theres loads of little parks in this area with statues raised to heroes of the British empire, I think almost every park in Charing cross has one.

If you are willing to brave the dangers, then London Zoo down at Camden Town is a good place. While your at Camden you can go to its legendary market which is quite good fun - there are three or four markets though not just the one, each has a different character. Warning Camden can get a bit rough specially as you get closer to chalk farm or kentish town.

SoHo is a must see, spent most of my time there at uni. London's gay capital, its amazing fun, theres loads of different shops there selling the weird and the wonderful. Plus there are lots of nice bars, quite a few have some sort of outside seating, my sis owns two of them!!!(PROUD LITTLE BROTHER MODE ), theres also lots of cool clothes shops here and a 50p a go cinema. While your there you can take a quick trip to little china town, which is just like china towns everywhere, full of life and colour.

For a nice shopping area theres the obvious choices of Regents street, Bond Street, Oxford circus(easiest place to get to carnaby street from - another famous market/shopping area), Totenham court road(cheap stolen electrical gadgets mostly but clothes and bit at the other end), picadilly circus (loads of shops plus statue of Eros). If you want to go somewhere with a bit more than commercial supergiants (theres eight Mcdonanld within the space of a couple of miles walking distance - two are round the corner from each other!!) charging three hundred quid for a pair of pants then try The Angel, got a very nice shopping area there with loads of "little" shops selling cool stuff - wide variety here from houseware to antiques to retro clothes.

If you want to see victorian type architecture and the richest part of London then South Kensington is the place to go.

In Brief other things you should see - Tower Bridge, Houses of parliament, downing street (if only for its mediocrity - its our seat of power and thats the best we can do ?!?!?!?!), Madame Tussauds, St.Pauls Cathedral.

All of this is do-able in a couple of days as most of its 8mins(mile) walking distance from each other.

PS that was by no means comprehensive.

I personally think that anyone who *wants* to be a politician should immediately be banned from ever being elected.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Those that crave position are by their nature the most corruptible therefore only those who do not wish to govern should be allowed to govern.

- By someone or other can't remember who

They think now that they are above the everyday folk living in the country and can ride roughshod over public opinion,

Most of our MP's are fourth or fifth generation now and have basically formed a new aristocracy, destroyed a thousand years of tradition and destroyed our public services despite spending ever greater amounts of our money on them.

That just about hits the nail on the head Exar! The question is, how does it get changed for the better?

Bam-Bam, when are you over? I can check to see what's going on at the time.

I am all for the execution of all politicans, especially those who want power. One of the few politicans that has prominence that I trust and like to any degree is R-Tennessee Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader. Actually happens to be my state, so I will switch sides and vote him back in. Seems to be a good guy, and really not the typical politician.

Hmm. Running for re-election in the Diplos' senate, aren't you, ABT?

There's always a handful of politicians who've managed to maintain an aura of respectability. Paul Simon, former Senator from Illinois, leaps to mind, as does Fred Thompson, former Senator from Tennessee. For that matter, there's Jimmy Carter. While I certainly didn't agree with everything these guys had to say, I respected the fact that they stuck to positions that they honestly believed - they had credibility. No debates on the meaning of the word "is," for example...

He's got you there ABT - time to fire up one of those terror stars for target practice.

I think some politicans do fine jobs.

One of the worst problems on the political front in our country is related to media.

For some reason media in Canada is anti-Conservative.

Most papers feature nothing but left wing commentaries and stories.

I think there is a hidden world wide socialist order just waiting to take everybodies last tax dollar.

That's the media in most countries Tech. The US finally has Fox to balance it out. Sure, Fox just as about as subtle at being pro-Republican as the others are at being pro-Democrat, but at least you can get both sides now.

RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY! Actually, I don't abuse the power, so I don't consider myself to be among the terminated. Besides, just try. I can talk you to sleep. Filibuster!

Fox

You mean the network that had a reporter giving troop positions away by drawing them in the sand? Just as long as SOMEBODY kills Giraldo Rivera, I will be happy. And you must admit, some quality, family-oriented programming comes from that station.

Interesting breakthrough in Genetics: http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/04/21/fatherless.mouse.ap/index.html Link

Very odd. And not too surprising that it is possible.

Should open a good debate.
