The First Clone War
Exar and I invite you to take part in the first Alliance tournament for GalCiv Empires! The First Clone War is a knock down, drag out, no holds barred, kill everything in sight, raw score competition where up to three empires form an Alliance over a one month period; alliances then compete for the prizes. We've chosen a suitably sci-fi theme for this first one.
Challenge period: March 1st 00:00 hrs to March 31st 23:59 hrs.
Scoring: All legal Metaverse scores logged on the Stardock servers from all players in participating empires are counted.
Game Version: Any game version allowed.
Scoring classes:
Galaxy class champion - all scores from games at Maso and Suicidal difficulty.
Excelsior class champion - all scores from games at Normal, Challenging, Tough, Painful and Crippling difficulty.
Defiant class champion - all scores from games at Cakewalk, Easy, Simple and Beginner difficulty.
Scoring method: Simple addition of raw score totals in each class. No other modifiers applied to raw scores as posted on the Stardock servers; highest total at the end of the month in each class wins that class.
Overall champion: The alliance with the highest overall total score (addition of each of the three class totals) wins the tournament prize - The Kobayashi Maru Trophy.
Forming Alliances: Two or three empires per alliance. The three top empires in the Metaverse (as of the date of this post) are not allowed to ally. Single empires are not allowed to enter by themselves - we really want this to be about working with teams in partnerships that you otherwise might not consider. Individual player scores will not be followed in each class - it's all about the TEAM.
Tournament Score Updates: We hope the famous MWC Statbot team will do the honours and construct a simple table showing the scores of each alliance by class. We dont want to mess around with outside web sites or cause these good people too much extra work, so at the very least we'll simply post updated score totals to this thread regularly during the month. If we find a better way to do it, we'll let you know.
Tournament FAQ:
Q: Hey Wombie, I've got this great idea for a variant rule...
A: Save it. Exar and I have tossed a lot of ideas around, and we're determined to keep this first one as SIMPLE as possible. Give us feedback at the end by all means, and we can incorporate it into future tournaments. Let's get this one up and going - if it's good, we can extend the concept in the future.
Q: You know Wombie, I could play lots of games now, save em up, and submit them in March!
A: Don't be a prick. It's operating on the honour system, and we'll be watching for obvious abuses, but basically it's about trust. If anything, you should take the last week of Feb OFF, to rest and whet your appetite for the contest!
Q: I'm a Maso champ, but can I go back and play beginner to win the Defiant class for my team?
A: Well, you COULD, but don't forget that your scores all count on the standard Metaverse too. That pretty Top 25 medal is going to melt away fast with a dozen beginner games attached to it. It's in your interest to play to your best level. Oh, and we'll all know by looking at your individual Metaverse score after it's all over - and laugh at you. A lot.
Q: I'd like to discuss Rule 3 (b)...
A: No. What Exar and I say goes. No more talk.
Q: But...
A: Did you hear me?
Sportscast:
I expect the Galaxy class contest to be...murderous. There are now lots of experienced maso players out there: everyone starts from zero, no divider by number of games played, no aging of scores to consider, no spreadsheet to decide which phase of the moon to submit...whew. It's going to be a killer! Think Vin Diesel in The Fast and the Furious. Hopefully, Excelsior and Defiant class contests will let some of the lesser lights shine for their alliances. Forming alliances brings the chance for new and smaller empires to kick some butt to win the prize. It is true that, because of the Metaverse scoring system, the Galaxy class winner is likely to win the Kobayashi Maru (but not a certainty). We may consider other ways around that in the future, but for now, we're keeping it simple. Players should see each of the three classes as independent, worthy prizes in themselves.
What now:
You now have until Feb 25th to register your alliance by posting on this thread; I'm drawing that line because I think it will take a few days for the statbot team to organise themselves once they know which empire is in which alliance. So - talk it up and form your alliances, register them here complete with a snazzy name and come March 1st...IT'S HAMMER TIME!!!
Oh, and did we tell you about the $100 registration fee?

Galaxy, Excelsior, Defiant, Kobayashi Maru; Do I sense a Star Trek theme?
I'm glad you thought of this, it would be a good strategy.

Nice work Wombie!

I'd better not publish my GCCG2 version then..... 57k in an hour!

I love the idea, great job guys, do we want to create like a signing tread for the empires to create their alliances or we are going to use this obne to post everything on it?

Yep, this is what I was afraid of. G.R.O.S.S. has been waiting several days for the final ok from Yoda. Sorry I didn't provide that update, Gerakken. I thought the decision would come sooner.
As I sat waiting for a response, I began to wonder what other teams are forming up. Of course I could simply head on over to the other empire threads, but I've been a tad too busy to dig through all of that. What happens if there's only one team by March 1st? Or two for that matter?

Actually, this forum has threads from sixteen different empires, so I guess I'd be surprised if we couldn't get at least 3-4 alliances working over the next week or so. We weren't sure how the diplomacy was going to go, so there are bound to be some false starts - it's like asking someone out on a date; you're just going to have to ask around I can tell you that SF and the Jedis are allied, and like you I understood the Jedi were in the process of making a final decision about a third partner (we're happy if they're happy).
Of course, we don't want players 'upset' by this phase but we're just going to have to trust that people can sort themselves out into alliances for the purpose of the exercise without causing grief. It's only for a month, and if we have more of these events, then empires can change partners for the next dance!

Murphy's Law:
KitWarrior will ask a question, get impatient, take action, notice someone (Exar) has already taken such action, come back and read the response, and have a beer.

Sorry Kit, we're juggling several different offers in the Closed Council discussions. We have not yet come to a consensus over which other Empire will be a part of our team, I'll try and get the vote hurried along, but don't expect a decision for a couple days.
mumbles..... stupid democratic process... if only this were an empire... mumble..

It's three different championships, so dont be so sure I have a feeling the Guardians, Euros and FoTR are going to have something to say about that...
