hentai/echi (sp?) thing (the R and X rated stuff),

This one is called Tasukurumono - Hentai Doujinshi. I don't know much Japanese, but I'm sure someone immersed in the culture would immediately know what it means.

the big city book stores over there have an undue number of middle-aged family men browsing through that type of manga.

When I was stationed in Japan, I would commonly find middle aged men, reading these huge "comic" books on the trains.

I did not see very many younger readers though.

Still, it was pretty strange seeing them in that situation. It was good to see them back to their normal bumbling teenage selves last night on CTN.

You need to use a newsreader, such as Agent or Xnews or any of the ones available. There are many places you can find one, but try softseek.com or tucows.com. Do not under any circumstances use Outlook Express. It cannot decode yEnc encoded binaries, which everyone is using these days.

After you get your newsreader, you will need a news service. The ones supplied for free by most ISP's do not have good retention of files, ie, they don't keep the files long enough for you to get all the parts. (The episodes are usually around 180 - 190 MB, and are divided into a lot of parts.) I use Titan News, but you can also use Easy News, or one of several other good ones.

You will also need what is called a splitter program. Actually, they can split a file into the parts and join it back together. Jas Split or Master Splitter are good programs.

I hope that helps!

All this complicated computer stuff... Actually, it seems much easier these days. It used to be get a source disc/tape and a player, hook that feed into a computer, have a specialized piece of software handle the script and timing codes you input, and then output the finished product from the computer through the genlock and to a real good VCR. Do over as the editor complains about how crappy the timing is, or how lame a certain transition was, or if the script has to be modified. The file thing sounds simpler indeed. Lucky kids. Isn't technology wonderful?

Yes, much easier, but then we're not doing any dubbing or transfers, just downloading files.

Now, I can remember transferring film to video in the old days. Huge machines that never gave you the original image quality. Dust was always a problem, too.

The one thing I could never understand in school was film audio. It either leads or follows the film frame (I can't remember that either. ) I just always had trouble with the timing of the audio.

Yeah, I just bought a 120 and if I don't want to buy another one, I'm going to have to start burning some CD's.

Here's a question for any techies out there... How can I burn a video file to CD and have it play in my DVD player? I tried it and it displays the file name on the tv, but won't play it.

I use Nero with the MPEG2 encoder. In Nero you can select to make a VCD. These play in your DVD player. I have a DVD burner (anime was the whole reason I bought one) but I can only fit like 3 episodes on a disc (if I want them to play on the DVD player)compaired to about 20 (if I'm just storing them.)

yeah it works just like with music cd's: you need a program that can burn them into the proper format for the dvd player...i dont' burn dvd's so i can suggest any in addition to arclight

Thanks guys, I know I have a copy of Nero around here somewhere. I just didn't know there was a difference between storing the file and making it so it would play.

Now that DVD burners are getting to be cheap, I suppose I should break down and get me one.

You know, if I joined this empire, we'd become the #24 empire. That's pretty sad, actually.

Hey, as soon as you move up to AP, you'll be able to max out your game scores, Grathocke! That should sling shot you up to the top 15, 20 empires by yourself then!

Hey, so why not join?!? I could use a fresh face in the domain.

Actually, I did just get AP a little while ago, but I haven't completed a game yet. I have this tendency to only play on the larger maps so my games take awhile. Also, I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I think AP is a lot tougher than the regular Galciv was. Anyway, I should be done with my current game within a few days. Of course, whenever I think I'm close to finishing, it always takes longer than I thought it would.

Yeah, I know, I've seen how fast some of the scores get turned in. Perhaps I am just too anal. I always have to look at all the details, and so I take it just nice and slow. I'll never have a fast game like that, of that I am certain, that I am!

I play my games in about 3-4 hours. That's good enough for me.
