The amount of experience a ship gets for winning depends partly on how tough the enemy ship was.
If I wanted a high level frgate for some reason, I'd find a weak enemy with lots of small ships (or I'd build lots of small ships and give them to the weak enemy).

I never thought of giving a weak AI or minor, ships to then blow-up. |
|
Note that AIs will sometimes refuse gifts, so it can be better to trade them for an influence point or something like that.

...assuming that isn't just the metaverse getting the number of games wrong again.
I was attempting to celebrate my upcoming 100th win with an iron-man, non-cheesy game. Normally, I play with a party I created myself, the Orthodox Downie Church (which believes in love, peace, and swift alliance victories). But today, I played as the Reformed Downie Church (which believes in pacifism not in the literal sense, but as a metaphor for the eradication of all alien life). The RDC party gets massive military bonuses, but has -60% diplomacy, -1 trade route, and a big penalty to influence.
Unfortunately, I really can't play at Maso with -60% diplomacy. Everyone leaves me miles behind technologically, and they culturally assimilate my worlds... I'll need to change some of the settings in order to get what I originally planned - a game where you have to fight to survive.

Hi Newfy, I need a favor, can you put some tips on how you get Frigates up to 7th level. That must be x amount of battles to get up that high. |
|
Sure thing but you must know that I have only done it on the most fun difficulty level which is all AI set to normal.
I play the game so that the only AI I trade with (frieghters) is the minors and I fight with every major AI.
I will usually sell some techs to all the AI at the start of the game just to get some extra cash. But, I so kill all survey ships I come across.
I rush to get frigates and then all the weapons, hitpoints, defence and repair techs that I can. Forget about battleships.
During the battle you must be aware of the damage your ships are sustaining and send them back to the closest planet for repair. I have never figured out the repair rate that a Planet has but I think it is about 50% faster than not landing on the planet.
I always try and use the frigrates that have the highest experience in the battle. I find that once you get a frigate to level 7 it becomes very hard to get to the next level. In fact I do not remember ever seeing level 8.
If your ship is on a planet and an AI is attaking that planet make sure your ship will survive. Attacking AI will always hit the most experienced and toughest ship regardless of the hitpoints. If you hitpoints are low then send that ship running away to another planet. The AI will not follow.
So you see there is really no trick to it. I just make sure that I am careful with these ships.

... oh, he's serious ... haha
Sheesh, the once mighty G.R.O.S.S. empire and all that is left is one or two pirates that haven't been caught and jailed with the rest of them!
Everyone knows that the pirates are not retiring but are captured and locked up.
