OMG, I think the Tech master is about to take it to 11 *.

* Taking it to 11 is a reference from the movie Spinal Tap.

I take about 2 - 21/2 hours depending on variables. But it takes me 2 days to play due to RL.

Yes, excellent. Congratulations, Newfy, on seizing control of the media. Next, we must persuade the generals to join our cause, seize control of the power stations and the parliament building, and arrange for a general strike...
No, wait, I'm confusing my empire strategies with what I'm doing in real life.

I can now play a Gigantic 60K game in just over an hour, if I use cheese techniques. The only question is how much time I'm prepared to commit to it. I don't think I'm going to do more than one a day. I notice that many of the most eagerly awaited games ever are being released in the last three months of the year, which doesn't exactly help...

The next game I plan on playing is GC 2.0

Takes me that long too and I play several hours a day on my days off and 2-4 hours after work. What am I doing wrong to take so much time. In this game and other games I've played I've been accused of micro-managing. Any hints to speed things up?

I will try to give hints, so it won't be spoilers for how to win fast on maso.

Things that slow the game:
- managing lots of ships
- doing war
- have all animations turned on
- manging all planets for the social improvements. The governor are your friend in this game: they are only building queue and all planets use by default governor Ford

important things to know:
- ending before january 2190 will earn you a 50% penalty on scoring
- for an alliance win, you just need to be allied with all majors AI at the end of the turn. High diplomacy skills, giving tech or money can help to bring fastly the AI to close level

Newfy, It appears that Tech has uploaded new specs on the TT9000s (TechnoTron). The galaxy size parm delta'd from gigantic to huge.

Intel reports activity in Weyr's lab in the early morning hours so we can plan accordingly.

Meanwhile, I do battle with the self-righteous Altarians. These guys go to the right faster than Brooks Robinson.

My games are quite slow but hey, war is a messy business.

Yes, I'd recommend building all social improvements through the governor.
Also, if you switch off the GNN news option or whatever it is, it doesn't stop to list all the things you've built this round.
When I'm in a hurry, my entire gameplay consists pretty much of exploration / colonization, adding things to the governor list, switching between research and social spending, and trading techs with the AIs.

Termil,

If you are not using Cntrl-N and Cntrl U to find a good map, where the best planets are, resources, alien races you should.

1) Save a game
2) Enable Cheat mode
3) Press Cntrl U to see the map, If you like the map load the game you saved in step 1) and continue or if you do not like the map press cntrl N and go to stel 1) and try again.

If you are not using Governors you should, build a list of social project you want on each planet and let the game micro manage.

I play good games where I only build ships to colonize, starbases to extend my range or grab resources. The party I use is research.inc so I really do not need to spend alot of effort to keep aliens from declaring war on me.

Some time in 2005 we may see betas, Stardock I expect will not release the game untill theu are sure it is working even if the game does not go gold until 2006.

Yes, I forget to specify this option: active governor ignore GNN reports, meaning that as long something is in the queue, you won't go to a planet when it has finished the social improveent.

One other thing, you have to make contact with all the AI as fast as possible. So build one or 2 scouts and send them to find the AI. If you have done Cntrl U then you can send the scouts directly to the AI.

The faster you find them then the faster you can start trading with them. Trade in Tech for Tech and Trading with Frieghters are very important in a MASO game.

#165  by Citizen Matthew Downie - 9/17/2004 10:23:36 AM

I don't build scouts. I explore with colony ships and my survey ship, then trade for freighters and use them as scouts.

So you are actually saying that you are not gonna play then untill sometime in 2005, even 2006??!

But scouts are faster and cheaper, plus if you use Cntr-U, you would know where to send your scouts to make contacts!
There is another thing that can make your game faster, switch off the Autosave!(BTW does anybody know the key for QuickSave?!) But it risky if something happens you wont have a back up year! For example for me, i play Evil side, and if Fendumentalist come over... its Sh*T Big problem! coz usually they take over half of my planets and always Sol system(usuaully most advanced).

Interesting idea, since the AIs know where all the others are, you potetntially could get a freighter on its way to an AI you don't know yet. Have to try that. I usually don't trade for freighters as I usually don't trade with AI except for what they send me.

#168  by Citizen Weyrleader - 9/17/2004 10:35:43 AM

just to add, I never build freighers, only trade for them, then only if my economy is failing to develop for some reason

#169  by Citizen Aww_Nuts - 9/17/2004 10:36:55 AM

Termil, start with dip +60 or more (total between party picks and additional picks). I usually only start near the middle of the galaxy as that assures me much incoming trade revenue (this cannot be overhyped). Colonize with your military putting out ships at 2+1 turns (17 units * 3 = 51). When you have stuff to trade go to the minor's first and then the majors. Whoring trade tips would take volumes.

What you do with all this money and techs is then up to you and, ultimately, your end game strategy.

ough there you missing BIG time Weyr! I found it most helpful for your economy start running faster! one freighter early in the game usually take two Techs like Industrial Theory and Medical Theory, in other words its two basic Techs!
In my last game i actually won just with the help of fast contacts and freighters, which i traded!
Which reminds me i should say! BooM!! and BooM!!

i usually play with 120% Diplomtaic ability!total at start >>> Its Research Inc. plus another additional 60% picks... ough and yeah i always get Diplomatic Trans. which adds another 40% early in the game... which is such a fantastic deal trading goods with AI!

I don't like Cntrl-U. It takes away the sense of mystery from the game, and replaces it with a tedious bit of writing down sector numbers and reloading.
Freighters have excellent range and are frequently located in usefully distant locations.
