I take about 2 - 21/2 hours depending on variables. But it takes me 2 days to play due to RL.

Yes, excellent. Congratulations, Newfy, on seizing control of the media. Next, we must persuade the generals to join our cause, seize control of the power stations and the parliament building, and arrange for a general strike...
No, wait, I'm confusing my empire strategies with what I'm doing in real life.
I can now play a Gigantic 60K game in just over an hour, if I use cheese techniques. The only question is how much time I'm prepared to commit to it. I don't think I'm going to do more than one a day. I notice that many of the most eagerly awaited games ever are being released in the last three months of the year, which doesn't exactly help...

Takes me that long too and I play several hours a day on my days off and 2-4 hours after work. What am I doing wrong to take so much time. In this game and other games I've played I've been accused of micro-managing. Any hints to speed things up |
|
I will try to give hints, so it won't be spoilers for how to win fast on maso.
Things that slow the game:
- managing lots of ships
- doing war
- have all animations turned on
- manging all planets for the social improvements. The governor are your friend in this game: they are only building queue and all planets use by default governor Ford
important things to know:
- ending before january 2190 will earn you a 50% penalty on scoring
- for an alliance win, you just need to be allied with all majors AI at the end of the turn. High diplomacy skills, giving tech or money can help to bring fastly the AI to close level

Yes, I'd recommend building all social improvements through the governor.
Also, if you switch off the GNN news option or whatever it is, it doesn't stop to list all the things you've built this round.
When I'm in a hurry, my entire gameplay consists pretty much of exploration / colonization, adding things to the governor list, switching between research and social spending, and trading techs with the AIs.

Yes, I forget to specify this option: active governor ignore GNN reports, meaning that as long something is in the queue, you won't go to a planet when it has finished the social improveent.

I play good games where I only build ships to colonize, starbases to extend my range or grab resources. The party I use is research.inc so I really do not need to spend alot of effort to keep aliens from declaring war on me. |
|
One other thing, you have to make contact with all the AI as fast as possible. So build one or 2 scouts and send them to find the AI. If you have done Cntrl U then you can send the scouts directly to the AI.
The faster you find them then the faster you can start trading with them. Trade in Tech for Tech and Trading with Frieghters are very important in a MASO game.

I don't build scouts. I explore with colony ships and my survey ship, then trade for freighters and use them as scouts.

What, you're going to start marking off every post that's divisible by ten now?
| |
|
|
But scouts are faster and cheaper, plus if you use Cntr-U, you would know where to send your scouts to make contacts! |
|
I don't like Cntrl-U. It takes away the sense of mystery from the game, and replaces it with a tedious bit of writing down sector numbers and reloading.
Freighters have excellent range and are frequently located in usefully distant locations.
