Oi! If anyone lines up for hedonism it will be Seven of Nine and I first...

What Roy needs is a good AI program to make him smarter

Now let me think...maybe I could use one from my old washing machine...no...VCR is too complicated....

what does units think of gc2 so far?

#2254  by Citizen The Man in Black - 4/4/2005 10:26:17 PM

I'm not a unit but it's very raw at this stage. Hard to judge with all the usual stuff absent. I haven't been able to play all the way through a game yet either and am only trying small maps. Going on a small map with 9 other civs is not good - the AI seems all over you from day one. I started one game right next to 2 AIs and lost my home world to cultural assimilation before I could get my one starting colony ship to another planet - lost the game in three turns!

This is not a criticism, of course - it is just the issue with a REALLY early beta. I haven't worked out the ship construction stuff yet either; I think I'll turn the difficulty right down, bigger maps with fewer AIs and that should give me a better chance to play around. Anyone else giving it a go?

I'm trying, but consistently crash about 30 turns into a game these days. if you're having probs with influence just research the culture thread a little, seem to hold out longer, and then you start flipping them MWHAHA cough, er, now where waz i? ship design is probably a little too busy for me - i don't really care too much how my ships look, so I don't tend to bling - might be good to save some personalised hull designs you can use in games rather than strategy specific ship designs. also you can build all purpose combat/transports/colony ships which seem a bit too sneaky and powerful....not sure about the research screen yet. am being won over by the planet screen if it is effectively micro-managed, can see now what brad intended, ie you have to evolve your planets with your strategic needs. like you say, still very early days. i'm just glad it plays on my little laptop!

Not crazy about the game so far.

I got the message about the new GC II. I have read some of the comments above. I think I will wait a bit longer for the beta to improve. As for now, it is good being back from the dead (or at least inactive).

I wasn't one of the people who really screamed for ship design, although I realise many saw it as the logical way forward (especially if Stardock was NOT going the tactical combat route). The tricky bit will be if there is enough variety to really justify "strategy specific" ship builds - like strategy specific starbases - or we will all just end up building standard ships because it turns out there is no real advantage involved. Definately undecided about this one....

not sure about the research screen yet

Agreed - sometimes cant be sure what I'm actually researching! (and that's BEFORE taking mind altering drugs)....

am being won over by the planet screen if it is effectively micro-managed, can see now what brad intended, ie you have to evolve your planets with your strategic needs

I'm warming to this too - need to play a lot more with all the pieces in place to see if there is an overall change to the feel of play, though. In GC-1 I tend to just set global build lists, which I might alter on my best planet to have that building wonders and trade goods - every other planet tends to build the same list of structures. The thing will be the degree of micro-management vs time taken and overall influence on winning the game.

Generally - I've never been involved in a beta with a game before, so it's really interesting to see it evolve. BTW - anyone checked out Space Empires V, also in beta?? Looks like a similar approach...

Space Empires V, I never seen Space Empires IV in any store I buy software from.

Tech - they also sell by downloading, like Stardock, I rarely see them in the shops here either. I'm sure there is a downloadable demo of SE IV around though - just Google to find it. We wont see an SE V demo for a fair while yet.

Interesting recalc on the meta. Only 3 players above 2 million and 2 of the 3 are Foundation. Hurray for the Foundation!!!

There are so many of those Guardians because former co-member of the Fellowship of the Ring Empire, Theoden did such a good job creating the Guardians Empire. The "we are number two so we try harder" Foundation has to celebrate our success when we can.

Roy, it's on my list of movies to see. In the US, there is a DVD rental by mail company called Netflix. I check out 3 DVDs at a time for about $17 or $18 USD per month with no late fees. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Just saw "Supersize Me" a documentary about fast food that was nominated for a couple of awards. It's very good.

Thanks to all the Foundation empire for second place and things to cheer about. If everyone else joined us, we might catch the Guardians . . . or not.

Moved Miller's Crossing up on the queue and will watch it soon. Sounds very good.

Wife is gone this week so it's time to catch up on "less than the best" fantasy-fiction flicks, like TV movies and sequels. Some are on Sci-Fi cable channel so I recorded them recently. "Legend of Earthsea" was not as good as it should have been with great books by Ursula LeGuin. Still worth watching for fun. If you want an epic movie with a budget, see Lord of the Rings again . . . and again.

"Merlin" was better than I thought it would be. The wizard fights were pretty cool and the story was better told than in Earthsea. Recommended for those who like Camelot legends.

I rented all 3 parts of the Matrix (can't recall their names). My wife thought part I was so-so but I loved it. So, the next few nights will be Matrix I, II, III. I heard the sequels can't compete with part I but isn't that the way it goes? Will report back when I come up for air.

I had to watch the last part of Matrix II several times before I fully understood what the heck was being said. Good movies though, I liked them all.

BTW, I was not re-calc'ed, I submitted a game after taking a couple of weeks off...oops!

Thanks Chipperoo. I am going to watch Matix II tonight after watching Matrix I last night. If I don't get MII, I will just rewatch it.

The metaverse can be unkind to anyone who goes on vacation or gets busy with real life. I have been there.

I checked the metaverse something seems off.

Now that would be different.

The following is just my opinion but. . . Matrix 2 and 3 were not as good as Matrix 1. I thought M3 was better than M2 because the battle scenes with the machines invading the dock at Zion are first-rate special effects. They could have edited out a lot of M2 and some of M3 because I found myself wishing they would hurry through a few scenes. The Matrix trilogy is a cinematography - special effects powerhouse and all sci-fi fans should enjoy it. If you don't get around to seeing 2 and 3 for a while, don't worry. You saw it all in Matrix 1.

Matrix 1 was so cool because you had to figure out the concept. Once that cat was out of the bag the others were just good special effects movies.

Druid, I totally agree about the Matrix sequels.

Technician, congrats for 1200 games. Wowza!!!
