Before I would pre-order I would like to see some idea of what Stardock propose.
I do not require great graphics (case in point Galciv). I dont even watch the video scenes after the first couple of times.
I agree with Coplann and would settle for a modern day MOM.

Even if it was the same just re-written for the modern day pc's it would be great..
Question: What about running into Copyrite problems.. if not for the game desing then still may have a prob using the name..
I've seen many many re-workings of old games that will no longer work on the modernday pc's.. they nearly always run into these problems.. and whats more they are usually near the end of developement when the complainant does anything about it..
So i'd Suggest contacting the parties concerned and getting permission in writting just to cover yourselves

I think the question is, if Stardock did a MOM2 would enough people pre-order it to justify the considerable risk involved in making a sequel to a 10 year old game. Do people trust Stardock enough to turn out a good game enough to pre-order? |
|
Trust me on this one. Stay true to the concept. Enhance the ai a bit, Update the graphics, update the tech tree a bit, Perhaps have more planes of existance instead of the two, and you'll have a smash hit on your hands and you won't need to worry about preorders. They'll roll in.

Good idea!

Never played MOM so I don't know much about it. I selected MAYBE in the survey because of that.
I have been happy with Stardock since the OS/2 Galciv days. I plan to purchase GC 2 when it comes out. I may purchase MOM 2 if I see some more info about it.

Like GalCiv I would look at the demo first but if it is at the same quality of gameplay I see me getting it.

Yes.

That is essentially what we would do. Take the original game and enhance the graphics |

Well, in essence it is very simple: now that you've got us all drooling like fools at the mere thought of a Master of Magic sequel, you can't back up. And if you do, we'll buy Stardock and make you do it

I never played MoM, but I'd definitely be interested in a StarCon (not Star Control -- Atari/Infogrames still has the rights to that name) sequel IF you managed to get Fred Ford and Paul Reiche on board as story designers. After the botched job Legend Interactive (now defunct) did with SC3, I don't want ANYONE but the "Precursors" touching the game, story-wise. I want to see THEIR sequel to The Ur-Quan Masters, which is still one of THE best games of all time, across the board.
I'll have to look into MoM, though, and see what it's like.

I would prefer it to be part of Drengin.net; this would definitely convince me to pay subscription for next year or two
Answered yes, of course

ok I'm confused
the poll we took earlier was a choice of a new MOO or a new star control not MOM.....
correct me if I'm wrong (and well could be)

For the old poll, I'd go with Star Control, but again, only if the two principles at Toys for Bob (the original creators of the series) were responsible for the storyline and approved the mechanics.

If we did a MOM2 it would be in conjunction with Atari who currently owns the rights |

As much as I trust Stardock to produce a quality game, I have this bad feeling that Atari will somehow screw things up. Atari's rep in gaming circles right now is severely tarnished. I'm crossing my fingers that your way of doings will influence Atari and not the other way around.

I'd happily preorder a Stardock MOM2, even if it were just updated graphics and better AI. What would truly make it immortal would be some ability to create mods/maps/scenarios.
I'm curious as to why the project would be so much more expensive than, say, GalCiv. Would you have to rebuild from scratch, or would any original code be usable?

If we did a MOM2 it would be in conjunction with Atari who currently owns the rights.
But doing such a game will be quite expensive. More expensive than a GalCiv type game. So it's not known how many people would buy the game once it came out and so there's an element of risk involved. We would want to get at least 5k pre-orders.

I, too, would be worried about Atari's involvement. Stardock has been a lone beacon of sanity in a messy, we-publish-screwed-up-games-then-don't-allow-developers-to-patch universe.
I think 5K in preorders for MoM2 would be easily feasible. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the sorts of numbers that roll in for pre-orders, but the degree of fanaticism created by MoM has rarely been matched. I know a number who still play the old one. There are probably old strategy gamers rolling around in pleasure without even knowing why.
Although, I have to put in the other side of the spin, in that there really is the spiritual heir to MoM out there (Age of Wonders from Gathering), and while getting a lot of good criticial consideration, doens't have that much popularity. Perhaps the time for us has passed by.
Then again, that's a point of spin for all the frustrated strategy gamers out there. I imagine that beyond the cultists, if there was press to the extent of "this is the renewal of good, old fashion strategy games and the call for all who love them to retake the industry from all those MMORPG/FPS kids."

I never played the original MoM. But I trust Stardock's programming enough to say that yes, I would pre-order. After seeing GalCiv and Political Machine, I know that what you will do with this game will be good. But if you are looking for 5K in pre-orders, you will want to advertise elsewhere, I don't think you will get 5K if you only advertise here.
Another question, will this be still part of Drengin.net? If so, you can be assured, I will update my subscription next year! And of course, GalCiv II.
