I would purchse advance copy of MOM2. Same disclaimer as most; I'd need assurances that the project was staying true to the original.

Long ago I compiled a "wish list" from a lengthy discussion thread. It is at the following link:

Well, I would see what the end product looks like before I decide, but if Frogboy would be doing AI for MOM2 chances are I would buy it.
I've never seen such AI in any TBS strategy game I've played and I've played many of them.

yeah, i'd definitely preorder the moment there was an option to do so; even if you don't get the license i'd preorder

having read most of the posts on this forum in the last several months, I could sum up my opinion:

1) if doing s/t w/ the MoM license, stay true to the original, but nevertheless update some features to bring them into the modern age (e.g. some have said keep tactical combat simple, but I think it needs more options like height factors, flanking, cover, attacks of opport., initiaive, retaliation limits, morale, etc), and

2) even if you don't get the license, just doing s/t in the "spirit" of MoM would be awesome--by that I mean a "Civilizations-light" fantasy game that focuses on *multiple* paths to victory (always loved how one wizard dude in one city could research the penultimate spell and bring massive empires down!), and that features tactical combat with troop formations grouped together

thanks!

i can't believe it has been 10 years though since the original...

#2 by Citizen Coplann - 6/20/2004 3:26:44 AM hm, Star Control 1-3 was great fun too, but MoM1 >> *.so if a Master of Magic 2 is really a Master of Magic Iam definitly part of the "absolutely" crowd

Star Control - now there's a name I haven't heard in while - while I didn't too much for the battle screen part (it was a pain to control the ships, as it seemed to me back then) - the story and the voices of the races where really neat and creative (especially the story and the conclusion) - I always had hope somebody who do a follow-on or modernized the game to current standards and re-release it.

Speaking of old-time favorites - Lords Of Conquest was another one I loved (a game I played on the Commodore 64) by EA. I wish a fully expanded modernized version of that would be released some day as well - it was totally original in design and concept, and nothing like it has ever been released since those early PC days.

Any updates on whether or not Stardock is going to proceed?

#356  by Citizen npilgaard - 2/6/2005 9:13:08 AM

I would definately pre-order a MoM2 game.
I greatly enjoyed playing it back then, and even played a couple of games again only a year or two ago.

A whole generation of players remember MoM as arguably the best fantasy turn based strategy game ever made, and those players are now 10 years older, many of them adults, with much better financial standing than 10 years ago - many would buy a MoM2 game for the nostalgic reasons alone, I think

I would really like to see MoM2 being developed, and I definately think that there is a huge number of potential buyers out there!

#357  by Citizen Twanfr - 2/8/2005 12:41:09 PM

I will pre-order a MoM2 game too.
Coming from masterofmagic2.com, I follow this thread since months waiting for news. A new MoM is really a good idea not only for players for your company. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have discovered GalCiv after having heard you have a MoM project, and I like this game too (even if I'm not fond of the space opera genre) especially the AI quality. I dream of such a capable AI in MOM and can't wait to see it.

So... good luck for your negociations.

Woah, I think this would be awesome! I've been waiting for a Master of Magic 2 game since Master of Orion. (I always wondered how 2 sequels were made for that game, but NOT for MoM!)

#359  by Citizen Torolf - 2/25/2005 7:40:48 PM

Yes, I would pre-order a Master of Magic 2. Hopefully, even if Atari screws things up, it might get Stardock enough pull to do another game the right way.

I'd definiely buy MoM2 if

1) I knew about it (i don't read this a lot)
2) It was sufficiently similar to MoM2
Note particularly the farce that is MoO3 -DO NOT put in any real-time fighting.

Things that would be nice additions:
-more xp levels
-more planes
-more spells
-QUESTS (both for your empire and for your heroes individually)

Be careful with the graphics -zooming is definitely good but the graphics don't have to be spectacular and do have to be clear: concentrate on not wrecking the game with the graphics rather than making them a selling point.

I'd definitely buy a remake of MoM that would run on Windows without faffing about. In fact I'd very much like to see this immediately if you can do it while MoM2 is in development.

This is a ten year old game that A LOT OF PEOPLE STILL PLAY -a quite phenomenal achievement and an update is well overdue.

I'd certainly trust Stardock to improve the diplomacy.

the diplomacy needs lots of work

Seems like negotiations continue - and this thread continues as well...

Very few games can muster this kind of continous support - MoM2 sure seems to be a sure bet for the developers

#363  by Citizen Hrdina - 3/20/2005 4:04:27 PM

I never played the original MoM much, but I am certain that my wife would buy MoM2. She saw how much time I spent playing GalCiv, so she knows that Stardock have the capacity to make a great game.

I would definitely preorder a MOM2.

If you are serious then you need to use your reputation to get other sites to broaden awareness. The first sites that comes to mind....

In General just Google "Master of Magic" and contact the live ones to put up a query and link on thier MOM page and see if they will feture the question on thier opening page for a month or two.

Doesn't seem to be any news from Stardock

fsk+ You reach the core issue.
Stardock WILL make a Civilization as fantasy style game after GalCiv 2. The question is whether it should be Master of Magic 2 or some new title.

That post is a bit old but it containts some key points:
- MOM2 developpement will start after GalCiv II is released. The current ETA for GC II is at beginning 2006. But it will be also released "when it is ready". So you can't really expect MOM2 before 2007. But if it goes like CGII, people who have preordered will be able to participate in the beta, that could take place in 2006.
- rights about using the MOM brand name maybe be too expensive (be it money, royalties on sales or control of the product by Atari) for Stardock. The latest news I remember were that discussions were still on-going.

Last I heard from Brad was the lawyers are still hashing out the details The litigious society we live in can go to hell in a hand basket as far as I'm concerned.

The word 'yes' is not sufficient to express the 'yes-ness' of my answer.

I only recently discovered MoM, and once I get past the setup and actually start to play the game crashes. But, from what I've seen, I'd really like to play it. So, if Stardock are really interested in doing MoM2, I'd definitely pre-order it. I've been pleased with GC, and GC2 looks even better, so I am confident that Stardock could do a good job. It'd be really nice if it could incorporate multiplayer [pbem or hotseat especially], but, otherwise, I'd be happy with an upgrading of the original with a Stardock-quality AI which would run on new systems.

Do you have version 1.31 as that fixed a lot of bugs. You can find the version number on the load/save menu.

If you don't have version 1.31 try downloading it from the underdogs website

http://www.the-underdogs.org/ Link
http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=687 Link
The second address is the master of magic page where you can access the download

If your running windows XP you will probably also need dosbox if you havn't got that. To get that just go to google and type DOSBOX DOWNLOAD or something like that. Try and get the latest version and if you can't find it i'm sure other people may give you the exact site.

After 10 years I still rate mom as one of the best games ever (only held back because of the poor AI, diplomacy etc). But Stardock did a great job on AI and diplomacy in Galciv and if they can recreate the mom feel and make the neccessary improvements for mom2 It would definately bring the designers a lot of fame and glory.

What I think is especially unique about mom is the battlefield. Having a battlefield gives mom2 the possibility to go where civilisation never has and actually create true 3D battlefields with dynamic terrain and weather effects etc. You can still have the isometric grid but conceal it more with the 3D terrain eg cliffs.

If that was to be done it would redeem TBS from the reputation of having lousy graphics. The overland map could be largely taken of the original mom/civ model but the battlefield has an enormous potential for improvement (mountains, rivers, valleys, snow and thunderstorms etc. Its an opportunity that just can't be missed.

An ex-Stardock employee is claiming the MoM2 project is dead. He says "Atari lawyers wouldn't budge on some conditions Stardock wanted and they killed the deal." Say it ain't so

How'd you find that out? Link pls?
