Building Starbases

Just a quick question here...

When you build a starbase next to a planet...in order for the planet to reap the benefits of modules does the starbase have to be within the same GRID as the planet?

Or does it just have to be close...How far away from a planet can a starbase be?

I notice that I have resources in the area of some of my planets but they are not in the same grid as the PLANET.

You can build starbase:
- in empty space
- on ressource

A planet will benefit from the manufacturing bonus of modules associated with the starbase if they are in the same sector

Mining ressources improve your empire wide ability assoicated with the ressource. So it benefits all to the planets.

okay thanks. So all you have to do is basically build the starbase in the same sector...a sector being 1 grid square. So you get all the bonuses of the modules that you install...and you basically get a freebee if you build the base on a resource.

To elaborate on the great info PP gave you...

The resources are:

Blue Cube - Cultural Resource (Influence)
Red Cone - Military Resource (Hit points, Attack, Defence), [Perhaps PP has info on this that he can elaborate on]
Green Sphere - Economic Resource (Economy)
Yellow Cylinder - Morale Resource (Morale)
Purple Diamond(3D) - Research Resource...my favorite (Research)

If you are fortunate enough to have a resource in one of your "Occupied" sectors, you can build improvements on it that will BOTH enhance the abilities within that sector AND enhance that resources abilities empire wide.

Starbase bonuses are cumulative so you can build several bases in same sector and greatly increase those bonuses.
Best place to build multiple starbases is in sectors with several planets in them (3 or more).
Another good place is sector where you are being heavily attacked so you can improve your attack/defence bonus for your ships in that sector.

Okay so to make sure I got this.

A starbase built in the same sector as a planet (starsystem) will ONLY give benefits to that planet or planets.

If you build a starbase on a resource then you get a EMPIRE wide bonus from the resource.

So even thought a sector has NO planets...it is still a good idea to build a starbase on a resource that is out there by itself because you get the EMPIRE wide bonus...?

Exactly.

And if there are multiple starsystems in one sector, all of them will recieve the sector bonuses from any/all starbases in that sector.

Except for the sectors being arbitrary lines on a map, it's a very good system.

Additioal reasons to build a starbase are
- extend your range
- increase trade while the mini frighters are in the sector
- attack with a terror star (destroys the star)
- flip other planets via culture (you can even flip allied planets

Is their a certain number of starbases that people build per empire? I mean not numbers in particular, but Do they say build 1 starbase per planet occupied sector and 1 starbase per freighter trade sector(i.e. trade route to another planet)? I sometimes ctrl - N until i get into a corner and get a decent selection of planets so I had a theory of building a line of starbases on the 2 sides of my corner that they could get through. Is this a good idea? I wasn't sure, because if a better strategy is to build starbases in planet sectors and trade routes then my starting empire starbase defense theory(being the planets u end up with after the initial colony ship rush) is useless. Thanks for the replies

Best way to use the trade enhancements offered by star bases is to trade with a planet the is in the same grid line as you. If you start off in sector 0,0 and trade with some one in 5,0 then has SB with all the trade add-ons you can reap some serious cash.

I generally try to start off in the middle of the screen as that is where the AI sends there freighters first. You can't tell it by this creation of myself (yet) as I have not sumitted to this account, but with numerous games submitted, I have found that finding the AI quickley is the way to go. Mainly for trading research. Every thing you get from them is one less that you have to do on your own. The reasons listed above are all good reasons to build star bases. Alot of what you build depends on the level you play, the type of victory you are trying to acheive, and the size and habitability of your map. A gigantic/tight/abundant map can be played about the same as a huge/rare/tight, but as you play you will learn what is best in each situation. There is a group of guys at http://www.thegalacticcore.com Link that can help you out as well. There is discussion about stratiges, mods, play styles, just about any thing really. Most of the guys there have made the top 25, including the current #1 player, and will certianly answer any questions you might have. Will get a quicker response too.

I needed to get to a star 1 sector out of my reach so i built a starbase to increase range. It took me 60 months and it did nothing

I remember that there was a version with this bug. Which version do you use? Can you update via Stardock Central?

Where did you place it. if you place it right next to your home planet you`ll not see much extend to your range

but if you go to the end of your range and put it there
you should extend your range then.
hope this helps

Once you can build terror stars, you can move the resources towards the planets you wish to boost production in.

Building terror stars is more of an endgame thing, and they do require 4 constructors and 5000 bc. But, they are fun.
