AI Influence

I wonder how the AI can have so much influence in AP. So far in my current game i've only discovered the drengin. Our military, economy and techonlogy is quite evenly matched, i have a slightly bigger population and control more planets, some of quite good quality. Even though this my influence is only one fourth to theirs. I've noticed that the drengin owns a couple of starbases. Is it possible that they, in 2186, have outfitted their starbases with so advanced culture increasing modules to do this possible. Surely their planets have slighter more social structures but still, in early game you dont get many buildings that can increase influence a lot.
What do you think?
Another question i have is about invading systems in late game. In my previous game i was playing friendly when a event(the altarian leader or something, was killed) made me go to war with them. As i like to "play" along a bit with these events i decided to actually figth them. Their only system that was in reach for my combat transports had 2 planets, each with 50 billion people. I mean, just to conquer one of their 15 systems i had to use about one third of my population, 100 billion people. That is ridicolous amounts. As i had a better economy the fact that their population was bigger didnt matter, i had more military power. But still, their 50 billion EACH planet made it almost impossible with a military victory.
I believe there should be some option to totaly bomb their planet down to, lets say 5 billion peeps. without having to use, either transports or terror stars. I really hope this is something that will be changed to Gal Civ 2.
Does anyone have a suggestion on have to achieve a military victory in this setting, without using terror stars or 10 combat transport on each planet?

Maybe they have fond more race: your influence increase with the number of races you meet.

You should spend some amount into espionnage to avoid this kind of bad event.

Thanks, didnt know about the one with influence.
About the other thing i knew about the thing with espionage and i think my level on the altarian espionage was advanced, guess it was just bad luck. My actual question was more about how to make invasion easier when there's planets with huge population.

It's your actual spending, for the events, not your espionage level. The later only determines how much information you have access to.

You can choose different combat tactic on the attack screen. They cost a severak thousand BC and can decrease the planet PQ or destroy some improvements.
In the library are some mods available with additional tactics ...
You should form a fleet of your transports. This way you only need to pay once for the tactic.
One variation is to invade with a fleet of a insufficient number of transports and use one of these bad PQ decreasing tactics. When you loose the negative effects do not occur. Thus you can reduce the population from 100 to 10 Billion and then invade finally with the rest of your fleet without PQ losses
