I have one where I started in a corner of the galacity with only three systems with planets class 15 or higher and one was taken up by a minor civ. Any idea?

Hi Jexal

What difficulty level are you playing?

You can win this one but it may take longer and you might not be so dominant therefore the metaverse points might be lower. Big deal. Just have fun.

Colonize the yellows that you can while you send out your Hero survey ship to contact aliens. If there are AI near, then maybe build a scout. Try to establish contact with the other AI soon so you can start trading.

After you finish colonizing, then start researching techs the AI doesn't have. Trade tech for money and tech if you are sub-maso level. At maso trade for tech and influence points. After trade technology, you can build freighters or trade for them with a major AI. Start trading as soon as possible with major AI (the closest or baddest ones) to keep them happy so they won't want to go to war. The minor AI near or in your sector will probably trade with you no matter what but the minor is a great place to get trade and diplomacy techs early. Minors will give you better deals than a major.

When you research enough tech to build manufacturing capital then upgrade your 3 planets with the usual good stuff (soil, habitat, manufacturing center, fusion, banking, manufacturing capital, entertainment, research lab, anti-matter planet, & economic exchange are usually my initial builds). Once you get manufacturing capital on your big planet, build trade goods and wonders there.

When you get tech or trade goods that you can swap to the AI, have them all go to war with each other. Break up any trade routes by looking on the treaties part of Foreign Relations tab and making sure there are ONLY yellow lines to you. When you get rich, you can break up trade routes to minors to by having minors fight majors and each other. What you want is to get the AI to do 100% of their trade routes with you. Chaos is bad for them but good for you.

If you keep them at war, they will set their trade route ONLY to you and the relations may improve dramatically. If you can get EVERYONE to ally, then you have the game in the bag because the risk of war is over. Recently I got all 5 majors and all 4 minors to ally during the same turn but that doesn't always happen. If you can't get them to ally you can still grind out a win through culture bombing as long as you stay alive.

Work your way through the tech tree to grab the trade goods and wonders. Once you get to The Terraformer and Galactic Guide Book then you can quit researching. After that, just build constructors. Send your constructors next to all the resources and build your own starbase when one AI blows up another AI's resource starbase. At some point if you get rich, you can trade or buy starbases from the AI.

Send out your constructors in groups of seven to build the party palace plus culutural maximization module. I think this is a 253% starbase. On lower levels or with alliances, you can drop the party palace starbase right next to the AI planet you want to flip. On higher levels and non-ally, you might have to build the party palaces in adjacent sectors. Either way, one or two in a sector or four to six in an adjacent will usually culuture flip the AI. Once the chain reaction starts, you are on your way.

Hope this helps. On a recent large or huge map, I had 3 planets, the Altarians had 14, the Torians 8, and the others 2 or 3 each. Without building a warship, culture bombing enabled me to win. Mostly, I had to survive. Of course, strategically alpha striking a minor with a combat transport can be handy but they are usually more valuable alive than not when one plays with no military like I do.

You can avoid a bad start in the future by using control-N to reset the start of the game but play however is most fun for you. As you might imagine, there is more than one way to do this and others might prefer a different path.

Good luck.

Jexal, also look at Sirian's OSC (One Sector Challenge). That's basically what you have going, but he did it with ONE planet. I did it with one sector but two systems and four planets...but I'm a wimp.

That can be fun, playing a bad start like that. If I were you, even though I'm not very militaristic that minor planet should look pretty tasty... send freighters there until you make contact with major races. Once you make contact, BLAMMO! The planet is probably 20+ and should give you a big boost to your manufacturing and tech research.

what does alpha striking mean?

Alpha strike is a strategy of eliminating most or all of an empire in one turn, thus preventing them from ever counterattacking you.
