Greetings;

Could someone point me in the direction of the "Tech Tree." I seem one once, but can't find it now. Is there a post that lays out the order of all the techs. Thank you for your assistance.

While we are on the tech tree subject, has anyone ever found the tech called "smuggling". On one diagram it is supposed to follow trade. I figured it was an evil tech but I have gone down to zero morality and never found it. Thanks.

Thanks for the information. I have another question. Is it necessary to get all of the tech? For example, I deciede to go for Excaliber Technology via the 4D route. Do I still need to finished off the Overloard Technology branch to get there? I also notice there are some other dead end branches. I realize there are advantages to completing some of the dead end branches, but wonder if going another way might save some bc and time with a better advantage. Thanks for assistance.

Spikeman, are you referring to achieving a Beyond Human victory? No, you do not need to research every tech to win at Beyond Human.

Thanks Vetran Theoden oof Rohan.

Is there any recommended strategy or technique for getting the most out of the tech tree using the least amount of $ and time?

Can you get to the full tech tree while playing the game...Like shown in the link above?

Is there one located in the game so we can do some analysis before picking a path?

Thanx up front

Yes, you can get the whole tech tree, except that its difficult to research both the good-only and evil-only techs within the same game. (Though it's possible if your alignment changes within the game.)

If you ment that you want to see the whole tech tree in the game, just right click on a tech. It doesn't mention what the alignment requirements are, though.

Doh, careless reading on my part.

Thanks Peter

That is what I meant. "See" the tech tree so I can map out a path...I just picked up the game so I am trying to learn all the tricks.

Cheers

Unfortunately, there is no good answer for this. Research generally is very personalized to each player, depending on what you want to accomplish. If you are researching for techs to trade, it is a good idea to research the "green" techs (Medical theory, etc.) because the AI doesn't seem to research these right away and they value them.

Anyway, I don't know if this answer is really what you're looking for, but I hope it helps. Micromanaging your research slider and concentrating on researching the techs that boost your research ability will be very helpful in speeding up your research. Also, try to grab as many research resources as you can. Build Tech Capital and the research buildings on one planet to boost it's research capability.

Anybody got anything else?

Well I don't really have a strategy per-se but when I played my first game...it seemed that no matter what I did, I couldn't out research the aliens. I was playing at the normal level. I did spend alot of my money on SOCIAL developing each planet which I think is an error especially if your trying to go the tech route.

But it was my first game so there will be a big learning curve.

Spending a lot of research is not enough to get a lot of techs. The most important thing in my opinion is to but techs from the aliens (usually in a tech exchange).

It's also important to switch research to a high-cost teh before your survey ship enters an anomaly which may boost your research. You can switch back afterwards.

It is aslo a good idea to try and get tech boosting improvement, tech's and ressources.

Only 1/3 of those tech boost/improvements counts as expenses, the other 2/3's are for free. This can be seen when you look at your planet screen.
Your spending for the planet will be displayed like this:
Military(x+y)
Social(x+y)
Research (x+y)

All the y's doesn't isn't added to your expenses, but you still benefit from them.

I tried to right click on a tech AND the tech tree didn't display.

Just a side not when I click on MENU at the top of the screen, the version I am using seems to be BUILD 1.04 or something like that. The retail version with out a patch I guess.

you must be using version 1.12 or higher to have the tech tree included.

You need to update!

That why you don't see the tech tree, i believe it came in v. 1.11 or v1.12.

You should upgrade, did you get that Stardock central working ?

I'll try tonight and let you know. I am seeing the Return of the King at 3:10 west coast time.

Can I choose which patch to download or will it automatically update to 1.13. That one has a tech tree error from what I heard and I would rather get a clean version?

Off to see the show...

You can only get the latest version. Believe me, it's better than the one before that. Cari has already come up with a fix for it, though. Just follow the instructions in this post.

I don't like these too much. They cost a bit to maintain, and the paying increase in research is often too much for my economy to withstand at 100% funding. This is still a good idea because of the free production, but the upkeep costs make it less attractive. I tend to build research improvements only for their +influence value. Otherwise, I have to play with the spendings bar every turn in the late game not to get into the red.

I wished I could update my version to the latest.

I still can't register my retail version.

Says my e-mail is not the same as the one submitted...which is wrong.

Oh well...I'll just have to play the 1.04 until someone responds to my e-mail that I sent to support.

brasscorpion,

Can you elaborate on your problem?

Sure

When I try to register my RETAIL version of GalCiv...I get an error message that says "The e-mail address that you have entered does not match our records. Please try again."

Also when I first log-on to stardock I immediatley get the error message after the timer shows up.

"Failed to validate your Gal Civ registration information."

That is it...I am playing the game and I have my code from the back of the Jewell case and I entered all this stuff when I set up all my accounts. I seems as though Stardock recognizes that I have the game installed on my PC because it appears as "installed" under the "games" tab. Just the registration is what I am having problems with.

Thanx

Brasscorpion
