I am rusty at this. Mostly now play culture flip & terror star.

Try to use an alpha strike if possible where you wipe out the AI opponent in one turn so they cannot retaliate.

Get the AI to go to war against someone else so they send all their combat ships away from their now relatively unguarded home planets.

Swoop in with enough combat ships (frigates and capital ships) to destory the few defenders or battleaxes left defending their home planets. Then overwhelm them with transports and combat transports.

Use normal warfare if you have the troops and want to preserve the planet. Build up population early and consider pop bonus picks so you can fill your transports more easily.

Try to fight one war at a time and alpha strike or if you are REALLY a bad dude, you can take a planet and then extort them into peace and take all their money, techs, trade goods, etc.

Don't waste your time going after their capital ships. Go after their planets - that is what wins the game. Don't waste time defending your planets against their capital ships. Your best defense is a good offense and blasting their transports.

OK, their should be some militarists that can update you on the latest best way to do this. In the newer versions, the AI is more congnizant of you lurking around with a combat fleet in their backyard so they might declare war on you first if you aren't careful.

Have fun and good luck.

Use a terror star to take out there most productive planets and see if you can force them to give up. If they don't give up then there most productive planets are gone thus making them a easy target anyhow especially if you have like tons of overlords or avatars or something
