Militaristic games - strategic choices

Well...i hate to admit this, but i got my butt kicked yesterday.

In this particular game i had i good starting position (got 6 PQ +15 planets in the land grab)

I had decided that it would be an all militaristic game and had picked +70 pop and PQ +5 (populist).
The plan was to use my supierior pop growth to take the AI's out with strategic strikes.

The first 3-4 years where spend building up planets and getting to Battleship-tech.

Meassured by planets (and pop) the Torians and Yor where equally strong (the Torians where stronger in military), second group where the Drath (AP race) and the Drengin and third group where the Arceans and the Altarians, the Kroxc where the poor civ with only one planet.

Summary:

Race Alignment Pop Military
Torians goood Strong+ Strong
Yor Evil strong Medmium
Aaberg Good Strong+ ???
Drengin Evil Medium+ medium
Drath Neutral Medium+ Medium
Arceans Neutral Medium- Medium
Altarians good Medium- Medium
Korxc Neural Poor Poor

Since the Torians where the strongest i choosed to eliminate there most likely alliance - the Altarians - as soon as i got battleships.
The Altarians where weak (only 2 planets) so they where first in line for a beating.

The other goody-goodies where the Torians who started out as the strongest, but it looked like i could send them to war with Drenging and Yor and still and up having an equal battle.

Btw:I better mention that one of my reasons for telling this little "story of defeat" is that i would like to heart other players opionons on the strategics (who to attack and when).

The short story: I keept the Torians at war with every body else (on and off). When i got dreadnoughts i build paladins (got 2 weapons ressources) and made my first major attack at the Torians.

The war lasted some time and i couldn't really take them out (got 3 most populated planet of 7). Made peace with them, but at this point they where ahead in research.

The bonus' Torians get from "incredible" seems to make their sovereings and paladins extremely hard to beat (2/3 of mine to 1 of theirs).

Anyways the Torians got out-of hand and got to be to strong for me to beat them, allthough i conquered to Altarians early on and the Korxc, Drenging and Arceans all surrendered to me.
I had build many paladins in my war against the Torians and they where making my economy go down the drain.

I must have made some bad choices early on, should i have waited with my first attack, untill i was strong enough to take out the Torians ?
The risk would be that they had allied with the Altarians, and that i would be doing all the hard work for the other AI's and thereby weakening myself.

What are your strategic choices, thoughts etc. when conducting military campaings ?

Where all the AI plying at the same level?

I am not sure if +70 pop is a great thing for a militaristic game. Especially with the caps at 200 milllions per turn on population increase by planet.

I don't know how my situation relates to yours as I tend to play medium maps. I have generally eliminated 2-3 majors before they can build capital ships... survey ship / corvette rush is a favorite of mine if I can pull it off.

I've found that to win militarily on the higher difficulties, I need to jump someone, perhaps a major and a minor early.

The high pop growth is a necessary, but it won't help as much as you think because you use a lot of your population loading them on transports to invade others....

The biggest part of maso for me is keeping ships alive as I can't afford replacements - plus experienced ships combined with military resources are a big help. I can often take down a dreadnought with an experienced frigate or survey ship that boosted by a couple of military starbases. Having said that, I don't think the war party is a good choice.

Populists are always good - though I also like the industrialists because it makes it easier to build up the planets you conquer.
