Hi, I havent posted for a long time. I recently downloaded a new patch for the game, and so far the random events keeps me on my toes during abundant/gigantic/intelligent AI games (which is about my limit at the moment). In the colony rush I basically secured the bottom right of the map and then came across the Torians (easy to keep them sweet). I happily trading with them, when , disaster!

It said that I was at war with the Arceans because my diplomat insuted the leaders wife! I thought I was hard done by by this because I hadnt even come across them by this time, so how can I put aside resources to espionage them!!! Whats even more annoying, that the race I find the most irritiating (Drengins - who I hate starting next to) declared war on me (without knowing where I was) because I was supposed to be a threat to Arceans!!!

Has this happened to anyone else? And does anyone think that factions declaring war on you without discovering you is on the verge of the unrealistic?

So no one has had a similar problem or wishes to commenr

Unrealistic... yeah, but there's a lot of unrealisum in the game. After all reality is for those who lack imagination...

Seems you were pretty far along in the game as they both had Alliance tech.

You can just ignore them on that size a map... If you haven't seen them then they haven't see you either. You could also take a look at where things stand using the tactical map F9.

I've had the AI decalre war when they have been way across the map. Takes them a long time to find you and by that time you should have had a chance to mil up.

That event where you accidentally insult some leader has been in the game a long time. I'm told that spying on the other races helps to avoid that event. The rationale, I believe, is that with spying you learn enough about the other cultures to avoid social gaffes ...

His complaint was that he couldn't espionage them... because he had never encountered them.

That was exactly my complaint. But ive done a new game on maso, and by the time ive completed my colony rush, they already have dreadnought techs, so i guess ill have to go back down to intelligent. I didnt have any techs, so i tried giving the drengins all my influence points, didnt take them to declare war, despite that

They really don't like getting influence points these days.

I came across the same problem, in an earlier game. Somehow, I managed to insult the Altairans and have yet to meet them. Met the Dregins, though. I chuckled and made note of this on one of the forums here. It definitely taught me one of the hidden value of espionage. Just would have been better to have met the Altairans, first and had a turn or to before that insult event.

Yes the event was annoying but then this is supposed to be a game played for fun.

If you don't spend enough money on spying on the aliens BAD things can happen to you..."randomly" of course.

Even when you do, bad things can happen to you

One thing to watch out for if that happens: transports! I once had Drengin declare war on me without ever having had contact, same as you - so I didn't take it seriously. Didn't have shield tech yet which is usually where I start building my garrisons so I just shrugged if off. Until, out of the blue, all those transports started dropping in and taking over my undefended colonies. Argh!

These days, when I touch Drengin, I immediately start researching towards shields .... sure keeps them very cautions about declaring war.

It's funny you should say that, Peter. I used to do that. These days, I just build extra colony ships and leave them in orbit. Transports cannot get through those. I do research star fighters though... and pop a few of those out from the lesser worlds. Just to boost up my military rating. As long as your MR is higher then theirs, the AI won't start a war with you... unless a random event forces them.

I recently had a random "assassin" event... with the Drengin leader visiting the Drengin homeworld, and a disgruntled former employee killing him. I found that funny... Where does the Drengin leader normally hang out if it isn't on the homeworld? Club Dred?

Now that's interesting. Did the new Drengin leader swear vengence on the Dringin and go to war with himself?

That's what I hoped for, but no...

Something like this happend to me on AP. The Yor declared war on me and they were on the other side of the galaxy. But right after they declared war, they were listed in the forign relations list, so I just put espionage and sabotage up to minimum and eventual got peace. Then I finally made contact with them, moblilzed a army of 20 billion, and invaded half there empire (It would have been all, but they were allied with the Arcean, and they actually bordered my space, so I invaded them, and then out of smite, surrendered to the Drox {they really said that.})
