Everyone ive met doesn't know what to do about research well what i do is go to research, go to the top where it says "name" i think and click on the right arrow to "months left" and just research the top one, this way you can advance technologically very quickly.
BUT...
if you have a stratagy in mind follow this map...
"C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations\docs\gfx\techtree.jpg"
its a picture of your teck tree in the game.
you open up "My Computer", "HDD", "Program Files", Strategy First", "Galactic Civilizations", "docs", "gfx", "techtree.jpg"
and pick what you want!

there are a few i research first, like stellar cartography and universal translator, then i go for the +10 population ones. after that it mostly depends on whats going on in the game. but once i'm able to research the "hyper computer, omni computer" string, i always go for them first. the first one is very research intensive, but once you get it, it makes getting the rest easier. there's a string of 5 or 6 in a row for a total of +60% to research.
another tip i like is to research the big long ones. the might take a bit longer, but once you get them, you can trade them to the other races for a 1-3 techs each, so for the research time of 2 or 3 small techs, you get a return of several times that (hopefully).
also, try and get the ones that give a bonus to diplomacy, they seem to help quite a bit in the bargaining.
