Hi
Does anyone have sufficient GC math to be able to tell me what the overpopulation curve looks like per PQ?
In simplest terms, when should I start dumping population on a PQ 15, 16, ... 32?
I realize that my morale modifiers will, um, modify this, so I guess a handfull of "Well, I tend to notice problems around X pop" rule-of-thumbs would actually be more helpfull than having to look at 3 charts and do 10 min of precalculus every game turn.

An easier method is to just look at the planet menu and look at the morale number. If you drop below 52% your population will start to decrease.
Simple, no?

i dont think you ever need to dump population. Just build the moral boosting buildings on your worlds, along with the PQ bonuses. Sure the moral might dip to 60 or so once in a while, but once it finishes the next Teleporter/Entertainment Network/Stadium/Multimedia center, its back up to 100%. Once you build all of the moral boosters that you can save Virtual Reality/News Network/Medical Center, you should be permantly at 100% moral, even on starting 14 PQ planets, even without a moral galactic resource. If your on a smaller map size, a good way to keep the moral up is keep taxes very low (like 20%) and base your income solely on trade (a minor civ in a corner gaurded by you works good, or a weak major).

I always find with morale resources, terraforming and so on that I can keep up with my population growth in the late game - maybe this would be less true if I wanted to hang around and research Final Frontier.
The only time I find population a major problem is when I've culture-flipped an alien world, and he's stripped it of all improvements to annoy me. In that case, I have to build a colony ship and take away almost all of the population, usually transporting them to a high PQ world.

I think that population limit is 100B regardless of PQ. I have played several games that went on long enough for all planets to max out on population at 100B each. There may be other lower limits imposed because of the lack of population sustaining buildings, but I had built everything on the planets, so at least under those conditions, I think that 100B is the limit.

yeah, the moral tips thing is very helpful, but ive found that ive never had moral trouble late game even on PQ 13/14 worlds. They never drop below 100% once i reach a certain point in the game (around teleporters/stadiums for me).

Interesting. I always have morale problems, sometimes dropping down to around 50% before I get into a true social phase of building. And I build everything, and morale always drops off again. Destabilization?

This I did not know. I thought it just effected elections and population growth. I read the whole morale thread and never pick up on this fact. What is the relationship between morale and tax revenue. Less people paying tax can actually increases revenue?

No, as your morale increases (by removing people, for example), more people will start paying taxes (being reported) and show as population growth.
When you have a planet with enough PQ and morale boosters to handle the extra population, you can dump them back on the planet. Population in ships do not pay taxes.

If you want to see the drastic effect of morale on taxes, try move the taxes sliders until your planet reach 25% morale. There is a huge drop in taxes at this point. It is also the point where the little red icon appers next to the planet.

I think there's more to it than that, as Phoenix says. It's not just population growth, it's an immediate effect that occurs at certain morale levels - I'm not sure which.
And there's a further point that hasn't been mentioned. Say you take off half the population from all your planets. Morale will go up immediately, and you can then afford to raise tax levels without it risking growth or elections or rebellions. This can mean more money from less people.
(But don't take my word for it - I never do this.)

Here are some informations about the population growth calculation.
The population growth of a planet if 3% if morale is more than 54%. If the morale is equal to 100%, the population growth is doubled. The empire growth bonus is applied on the base growth. And everything is capped at 200 Millions.
An example will be cleared, with a 2000 Millions planet and 50% empire wide pop growth bonus:
morale >= 54% --> base growth = 2000*0.03 = 60 population
50% pop growth bonus --> growth = 60 + 60*0.5 = 60*(1.5) = 90.
So if morale is between 54% and 99% we have next month 2090 million people on the planet.
But if morale is 100%, we have 2180 millions population next month.
The minimum population on a planet giving the cap limitation with 3% base growth is given by the formula:
Pop = 200/(0.03*(1+growth bonus/100). And this give the following table:

Which means that if you have the aphrodisiac (50% growth bonus) and basic enviromment tech (10% growth bonus and habitat imporvement), as soon as the planet reach with 4167 millions persons, you no longer have to worry about having a 100% morale on this planet for a maximal growth. Having 54% is sufficient. Which is great for taxes.
