What are your star naming conventions?
|
|
|

Anything beyond 5 plants get had to keep straight with names thought up by others. Fortunaly we can think of our own, here's mine:
Being that my empire is the FIST OF JOHN I name my systems as follows:
Largest Planet size in System 15-19 I rename to Finger Finger1, Finger2, etc..
Largest Planet size in System 14-under I rename to Knuckle Knuckle1, Kuckle2, etc...
Largest Planet size in System 20+ I rename to Fist Right Fist, Left Fist, Cock Fist, etc...
Any systems with generally worthless planets I use for hunting good/evil events or as a tradable resource get demeaning names like "Throw away pet", "Throw away pet Stepchild", or "Babbling drooling Retard".
So what are your Star naming conventions? I'm curious to see what some of you use..

I use a geographic convention.
For central systems I use name such as Tau Ceti Central, Prima, etc...
For south systems, I use name of Arabic-Asiatic cities : Samarkand, Thebes...
North systems : nordic deities : Odin, Thor, Loki...
For strategic systems : military names : Sparta, Achilles, Hector.
For far away planets : Hope 1, Hope 2... or Lone Star 1, 2, etc.
But perhaps naming according to the size of the planet is better... I may add +, ++, +++ after the names...

Inner Sphere planets from Battletech... specifically, Draconis Combine planets... it's the name of my empire, after all...

I just add the sector coordinates and some planet class designation to the the original system name. For example, "(10.04)* Sol". The numbers are added in front since the game automatically attaches Roman numerals to the end when reporting planets.

Star Wars planet names
Hoth, Coruscant(High Lvl Planet), Commenor, Folor, Kuat (Military Ship Producing Planet), Correlia, Sluis Van (Military Ship Producing planet, Ryloth, Yavin (Got to have 4 planets with 4th planet being hospitable Yavin IV)
Just use ones either from Rebellion or the expanded universe. Also changed my ship names to reflect Imperial ships and such as well as change the Alien races to Star Wars...Hope I am not going a little overboard here....just wish I could get my wife that Princess Leia Slave outfit in ROTJ but getting her to wear it would be the next hardest thing...

Where do they sell those outfits?

HAY! No bad mouthing Australia ... mate!
We don't all live in the middle of a sheep paddock, riding kangaroos to work - that's just a lifestyle preference I have
As for Stars and stuff, name them after mythical creatures, like Pegasus, Griffin etc ...
| |
|
I was going to mention something about Crocodile Dundee, but I figured that would be hitting too far below the belt.

Hey I bet you'd have the same reaction I'm having to your comment if someone heard that you play video games "Get a life"
Look I do what makes my game fun for me and you do what makes it fun for you but don't go putting people down because of it, were all here to have fun with the game not nitpick

I do the same thing as Verenti. A few other examples:
New China: My breeding pits
New Iran: All missiles, all the time
New Tibet, New Gaza, New Golan, New Kashmir...: Systems I took by force
New Tajikistan: Worthless in every way but I put a colony here anyway

Generally name my planets after characters in whatever book or series of books I'm currently reading.
Often end up using X-men character names

I keep all the same, but my top planet gets a British themed name. United Kingdom, Great Britain, Britannia, Brittany, etc.

I basically have two systems for naming planets:
1) I use system names from the Niven/Pournelle CoDominium/Empire universe ("The Mote in God's Eye", et al.) e.g., Sparta, St. Ekaterina, Tanith, Friedland, Santiago, Tabletop, Makassar, New Caledonia, Sauron, etc.
2) I use the names of classic Hollywood actresses (Monroe, Russell, Hayworth, Grable, Lamarr, Rogers, Gaynor, Shearer, Bacall, Darnell, MacDonald, etc.)
If I get ahold of enough colonizable systems, I sometimes use both systems simultaneously.
Incidentially, in the OS/2 version, you _were_ able to name individual planets within systems (which enabled me to have New Scotland and New Ireland in the New Caledonia system, for instance.) I hope this feature might be resurrected in a later update.

Star Trek and Star Wars planet names, whichever ones come to mind first, although I haven't gone into detail with system names like Kuat, Dantooine, et cetera. Also use the names of US and British cities (Manchester, London, Leeds, Atlanta, Orlando, and so forth).
Great ideas here though. The creativity here is impressive...

If I get a planet event (e.g. +49 shipyard), I put the info in the name (e.g. Darth,+49ship). The UI does not easily distinguish these special systems.
Planet naming would be even better.
