Something I've noticed is that when I'm allied with someone who I can't get to end a conflict with another civ's ally is that, if my diplomacy is high enough, I can get some goodies (cash or influence - sometimes even tech) for repeatedly making peace treaties. Basically every time they make an agressive action, I can ding em for credits. I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but it's pretty handy to be able to take all your enemies cash and influence if you can't stop them from attacking.

Yeah, the mechanism for allying is pretty borked - but if they're at war with you anyhow, it's handy to be able to make them pay for your war against them.

how do you ally with another civilization? Does it have anything to do with the research alliances??

IS there any point to alliances?
I allied with the Altarians last game, and I STILL had to pay them to declare war... they weren't doing it automatically.
Some allies they were.

I think I gave them one turn.
Do you get some kind of message from them saying they joined the war?
