The ancient art of rush-buying

It seems many players are avoiding rush buying due to a fear that it will hurt your economy in the long run. I do not agree with this view.

Money now is worth a lot more than money later. Especially in the early game, an investment in a trade good, a wonder, a colony ship or a constructor can pay off tenfold. The key to successful rush-buying is that future expansion will enable your economy to absorb lease costs. Expansion comes in two forms: (1) colonizing new planets and (2) enhancing existing planets. As long as you are in an expansive phase of the game, the effect on your economy of lease costs will diminish over time.

The one "problem" with this approach is that it FORCES you to expand. You cannot settle down for a drawn-out research period until you have reached a certain size. You must be especially careful in small and tiny galaxies, as it may be hard to expand far enough.

In one recent game in a tiny galaxy, I had rush-bought a few trade goods in the early game. Unfortunately, habitable planets were too scarce and my economy halted too early. Luckily, I had managed to produce a few dreadnoughts while to the AI had only recently aquired battleships, so I managed to pull off an early military conquest win before I went totally bankrupt.

Just don't overdo it. As you noticed, you can rush-buy too much and stall out your economy if you hit a setback.

While I avoid rush-buying, except for trade goods/wonders that are important to me and that I suspect an AI might get soon, I'll admit that I'm overly cautious about it. Let's be real, sure Mitrosoft leases are for a very long time, but the game will be over before they're paid off.

On the other hand, I like playing huge maps, and the ability to keep spending at 100% is pretty important, so I'd never lease more than one or two colony ships, and then only if I've already found that many 19+ planets.
